None of the streaming boxes have taken off because of gaming, they have all flopped at that and they are not irrelevant, nor will the Apple TV be big at gaming or be irrelevant, more people care about the App store not the games, Not one person at apple has said they are trying to take over the gaming industry
Nope, the streaming boxes have taken off because they let you watch Netflix and HBO Go on a big screen. Those are literally the only things MOST non-techies care about. And Apple really needs to convince the non-techies to buy this, and I don't think they've managed to do so.

Apple tv already has a base of over 25 million people that will upgrade, even though it was crippled up until a year ago it was number one streaming box, $50 is not going to stop people from buying the Apple tv, sorry man, that is just a fact, just like the Iphone whether it is better than other phones sells better. People buy Apple products , you can argue if that is smart but it is just a fact Apple tv good or not will outsell everyone

i don't get why people get all excited for emulators.

you can play any game you want on your computer, phone or tablet as it is.

so you can play it on your tv now? woopty doo? just mirror your ipad and there you go.

The difference is Atv is only $150, not iPad PLUS $150.

A $150 streaming device is truly dead on arrival. Don't believe me? What is so revolutionary about this device that can command such a large price? And when I ask that question, I'm asking what will convince middle-class soccer moms that they need this instead of a much cheaper option that can also stream Netflix/HBO/etc, not just something that convinces you or other Apple faithful.

Apple thinks people want to use apps on their TV. This is rubbish. No one wants to use apps on their TV when they can do the same exact thing on their phone in half the time. Steve Jobs understood this and it's why the Apple TV lacked an App Store for so many years.

Also, you say Apple is doing better than ever. This is true. TODAY it's true, they're still riding high off one-time-only recent successes that cannot be repeated. It's because they just entered the Chinese market and they're making unfathomable profits. But the problem is that for almost 5-6 years now they have completely relied on the iPhone to make the vast majority of their profits. Companies that rely on a single product like that eventually realize their mistake.

Apple is half heartedly trying to enter other markets, but they're making really DUMB decisions here. Cars...? Wasting $3 billion just to enter Internet radio/subscription music? Gaudy watches? None of these are ever going to replace the iPhone in terms of Apple's bottom line. So not only are they not finding a good new source of profits, they're wasting their time entering all of these different markets that they will never make any real money from.

If I was an investor, I would sell my AAPL shares quickly. They made the same *EXACT* mistakes in the 1990's.

Let's talk again in three years when we have reliable sales numbers and a mature product. I will eat my words when you are right.

People are also ignoring the fact that an MFi controller even works for controlling the main/menu functions of the new Apple TV (you certainly can't control an iPhone or iPad with one!). They even mapped the analog stick to fast forward! Another area that shows that at least they were serious about the use of these controllers, and of course the only reason someone would buy one is if they're semi-serious about gaming.

I started working on a game last night, only to realize apps can only use 1 remote. Sure, you can allow optional 2 max gamepads. But no support for 2 remotes ? Why are gamepads limited to 2 ?

That really kills my game idea, back to the drawing board.

You already do, Apple tv outsold roku up until last year and that was a crippled Apple tv and Roku had thousands of Apps

Well. I'm prepared to give him a head start and base it only on the sales of the ATV4. It won't make a difference. The general consumer will lap this up. People are prepared to pay top dollar for Apple gear. And rightfully so. IMHO they consistently provide the best functionality for people that are not prepared to spend hours on configuration and tinkering. And that is about 95% of all consumer electronics users.

You do realize that the App Store rules still exist, and are not any less strict for tvOS than iOS right? There is no way an emulator will be allowed on the App Store.

It doesn't have to go in the App Store if source code is available. Just use Xcode, build and install it yourself on your own device.

History shows that the TV accessory market is an entirely different beast than the mobile phone market.

That's what Palm said about smartphones compared to computers. They were way ahead in apps. Worked out well for them.

Apple's customers won't buy $30 tv devices. Too cheap for them even if some specs look similar. These customers will pay $150 once their favorite content and apps start appearing. Then some of the big game developers (Disney, et.al.) will follow the money. Xbox will end up a niche business by comparison.

Remember that Xcode 7 lets anybody build & install any apps they want. You don't need an App Store, and you don't need to follow App Store rules. You can download, build & install the emulator linked right now from Github

Yes, but consider the average consumer. They won't be able to do that.

Are additional players not allowed to join via an iPhone or iPod?

I would much rather use that than the remote

Use GameKit for multi-app multi-player. Lots more than 2 players. But you will have to build more than one app for your one game.

My iPhone only has ONE BUTTON. Apple is doomed!
iPhone has an infinite number of buttons thanks to the screen. You could sorta try to make more buttons with the trackpad, but you're limited by the small size and it wouldn't be very intuitive anyway.

The track pad itself is a button that can be clicked, and the up down left and right positions are pretty intuitive for taps and swipes (they can even automatically remap depending on the orientation of the remote). It's not enough to satisfy everyone, but developers definitely have more than "one button" to work with.

They should have included a gaming controller with the new Apple TV
But Apple doesn't care about gaming that much

Wrong, they do care much about gaming which is why at every keynote for iPad or iPhone they always talk about their processors and how it's improved x amount of times in graphics etc.

They care so much about gaming they'll leave it up to other companies who've already done the r&d for controllers and collect a simple licensing fee for free! 100% margin on every made for iPad, iPhone or Apple TV whatever for free!

You couldn't be more wrong. How much millions of Apple TV have they sold when it was just a hobby? Now they're actually pushing it and brought it front stage it's going to sell like iPods for Christmas!
