I have to agree. If you HAVE to use the onscreen entry, the linear is pretty good, swiping from side to side. Note that the play button will toggle upper/lowercase more quickly than going to the 'other alphabet' picker.

Still need a way to copy/paste real passwords of course.

Clicking and holding the trackpad on any letter also pops up a menu with uppercase letters, accents and a very handy backspace. Saves going all the way to the end for that as well.

Of course, none of that, however 'better' or not than the 'square' layout addresses the ability to paste in a password. I can't believe no one at Apple Infosec was involved in this. Does everyone there have passwords of 'password' because they use 2FA? Lol and good grief.

No question I'd prefer to see gigabit, but if you aren't getting a real 100Mbps wired, something's wrong - either with the ATV or with your network. Wired is pretty much full speed as advertised when everything is working. And there isn't really a reason an ATV needs more than 100Mbps connection at this point in time.

Turned out that the flow control got turned off on the port I was using on my switch. After I re-enabled that I'm getting about 97Mbps throughput on the ethernet port of the ATV. It was off with my ATV3 I assume the whole time, but because I can actually test the network speed from the ATV4 (and the fact that someone else confirmed that they were getting much higher throughput with their ATV4) this helped my troubleshoot an issue I was having with my switch.

I got my 32GB ATV4 this morning and I can say that I'm very happy with the new user interface and app store. I can't wait to see what the developers will come out with for bringing new experiences to TV. I prefer the new remote, it's a nice sleek design and I particularly like the fact it can now be charged! No more finding new batteries. The setup of the ATV4 is now seamless too. Allowing you to simply place your existing iOS device next to it and setup the ATV based on your iOS device settings (e.g. network, icloud, itunes, etc).

However, my main gripes with it so far are:

1. Why cant we still view TV shows and search for local library media properly!? This is an annoyance for me. I have an enormous movie and TV show library. If I go to my TV shows, and find a show that has a large number of seasons/episodes, it's a nightmare to navigate through. It should be Show>Season>Episodes, like most other applications. If I want to find a movie that starts with 'R', good luck scrolling through hundreds of other films before getting to them. Apple want us to get involved with there eco system by purchasing music, video and tv shows from there stores. Yet make the user experience terrible when we then want to interact with them via the ATV.
2. Never fear, surely the solution to problem 1 is Siri? Well think again, currently Siri does not support functionality for your existing iTunes library (I'm assuming/hoping they will in future).
3. I like the remote. However I often finding myself using it upside down and wondering why the scrolling isn't working.

All in all, I can see that this product will become very good in the near future. However, currently it isn't really much different from the old ATV. I'd recommend getting one but maybe in a few months time.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's picked it up without looking and wondered why the bugger isn't working properly:D

But I think you are pretty much dead on, it's a good product, an ok start, but lots of potential for the future.

agree. Both ends of the remote feel the same especially in the dark. I hold it wrong so many times. I don't have this issue with my Universal URC remote.

Right, you can barely tell which side is up, never mind the end. Then I'm always counting buttons to be sure I'm on the pause one. Needs something like the home row nubs keyboards have. Did no one really use this in testing in the realworld in beta?

I can echo the fact that not having the iPhone app for a keyboard is almost a complete deal breaker for me. I am seriously considering returning this thing for that single reason. The time it took me to type in a password was epic.

I think it's a safe bet a brand new Remote App will be rolled out sooner rather than later. I for one can understand their reluctance to do day one so that early adopters are kind of forced to use the hardware -- for now...

For me - I could not stand the remote app -- why? Because for example I use some of my current ATV's to stream music to my receivers all around my house. It's totally lame that thru ANY Apple device you can't see a MENU of your Apple TV's and whether it's on your iPad, your MAC, iPhone, etc you should be able to SEE your configurations at any time.

I mean you can configure an Airport Express from a computer - same should go for Apple TV.

The remote app was to replace the remote control and add a few features (touchpad where there wasn't one). It wasn't meant to mirror the screen.

If they are ever going to have it updated, not having it on Day One and pissing off everyone that has a proper secure password is about the stupidest thing they could do.

All that does is give you a motive to not purchase on launch day in the future (yeah, I know, big difference that will make :) ).

I've only played with ATV4 for a couple of hours now, but so far I've been really impressed. It's clear that Apple spent a lot of time on the remote/UI. Siri is fantastic and incredibly fast.

The setup was a breeze... I used my iPhone (highly recommended) and then installed a bunch of apps without a hitch. The App Store is a little barren (not surprising) but as all the reviewers said, there's a TON of potential here; by Christmas, I suspect we'll have more apps than we'll know what to do with.

My only regret is that I didn't get the 64GB version because I can see myself downloading a lot of apps.

How did you use your phone to set up the ATV4? My 6s wouldn't pair.

When control of tv and receivers is set on all my Apple remotes switch on and control ATV4 even when the setting is off

I know very little about classical music but this app is one of the best implementations of an Apple TV app and honestly is what makes me excited for the future of this device, even with its current plethora of shortcomings and bugs.
It's called touchpress and it's free. Anyone who was a bit disappointed in what the Apple TV can do (like me) should check it out to revitalize the excitement.

(I am not affiliated with the app maker in any way)

App Authentications:

Do I have to manually type in all my "cable" information for each APP on the atv4, or does it remember that for ONE App and use for it all.....i would really really suck to have to type in that I am "Xfin..."customer on every single app.

Thanks!

Can anyone tell me- can you record purchased (or rented) shows/movies from Itunes to the harddrive to watch later? Or is it stream only?

I've had a couple appleTV's in the past, as well as Roku- all of which became essentially worthless when I moved to an area where my only internet is sattelite or tethered cellular. But- if I can set the appleTV to download and record in the mornings when bandwidth is good, and then watch from the harddrive in the evenings when bandwidth sucks...

I would assume you could use iTunes to rent/purchase and dl to your computer, and then play it through the local library.

You have to set up each app individually.

First impressions, better wireless and video processing.
ATV3 and the NHL Game Center was ok. With the 4 the wifi is better and the video is much sharper.
If this wasn't the case the 4 was going back.

Apple's Siri faces the same fate as Microsoft Xbox One Kinect. Xbox One Kinect was cool at first couple days, but it was a hit and miss, especially in noisy environment that neither apple or MS can control.

Once I realized that Kinect/Siri is not a reliable input, I gave up trying. Like Apple, MS made Kinect as a big selling point feature when announcing Xbox One.

But I salute them for taking the risk and trying something new and creative.

Crashes constantly. Remote disconnects at random. Apps restart and crash at random. Hard resets, soft resets, and force quits can't remedy much—and even if they do, it only lasts a few minutes, then you're back to crashing again. Screw this pile of garbage.

When I use the volume control my audio receiver restarts and this of course blacks out the screen. I am not sure if I have a defective one or if this is related to changes they made. I tried several things and it continues to do this. I purchased from Best Buy on Friday, so I suppose I'll either take back for an exchange or just get a refund an try again down the road when there are more apps.
