Live sports broadcast is such a huge money maker and the sports organizations and TV partners won't open it up.

This is not true. They just want to be paid for their product- just like Apple. If Apple decided to outbid DirecTV, it could have been the source of Sunday Ticket.

since NFL is in bed with DirectTV, no way we would be so lucky to get it streaming live games like MLB does.

DirecTV has wooed the NFL by spending the most money. If Apple had chosen to bid against DirecTV so that it paid more, then the NFL would have quickly hopped into Apple's bed.

All this exclusive content is available to whoever wants to pay the most for it. Apple could compete if it wanted to spend some of the cash hoard to gain exclusive ownership.

Netflix is losing a bunch of recent blockbuster movies in the Epix package because they didn't want to pay up. Those movies will now be available on Hulu: http://variety.com/2015/digital/news/netflix-epix-deal-expiring-1201581520/ Same thing. It's never that the content creators are plotting against making their content available; they just want to be paid top dollar from whoever wants to pay the most for it. Apple certainly has the cash to win such contracts... but they choose not to do so.

I love my Apple TV but it's without a doubt the most US-Centric device I've ever laid eyes on.

I hope that the new ATV is more internationally minded.

I'm in the same boat; fortunately my girlfriend is still in college, so we just used her email address to sign up for it. They just opened up streaming-only services to college students at any school, so if you know anyone in college, make friends and go for it.

hmm I still have my @UGA Id. Ill give it a try :)

edit: damn it hunts your records haha. Time to call my nephew.

I live in the UK and I have a GamePass subscription and I signed in and tried watching a game and it said you have to be subscribed!!! Seems like there's an issue with the UK version...

Just tried with my gamepass account/subscription in Canada. Got a similar error message. Does work on iPhone and iPad - was really hoping it would work on Apple TV so I don't have to rely on Airplay.

Step by step instructions, please.
Sign up for a VPN service. I use boxpn because they have the most European access points than other services. Log into VPN in some European country then go to NFL Gamepass page and order service. Log into different country servers to find the best price. Obviously reload the NFL page each time you log into a different server (access point).

And that's all there's to it.

I hope the app is the same on both UK and USA services, as I'm in Britain but I have the USA apps because they're more useful to me (HBO, ESPN etc). If I can log in with a UK gamepass account and get live games because it knows where I registered and live, that'd be solid. Don't want to be constantly changing logins just for one thing.

Well, I would love to see Apple on the game but it seems to me the networks won't pass the huge revenue live sports generate. While the ATV still a small niche in comparison to OTA broadcasts like the Olympics for example, I doubt they can persuade to have live feeds on ATV. The exclusivity deals are huge.
We'll see. I can;t wait to cut my Directv for good.

At one time DirecTV had 0 subscribers. Then they tried to market TV reception in a new way. Eventually, they paid up big for NFL ticket and other unique packages of channels (particularly live sports). Now they have a LOT of subscribers. Apple could buy exclusive content much like that and make the :apple:TV much more desirable to the masses. Big contracts for sports, movies, etc come up for renewal often. Highest bidder generally wins them. Apple certainly has the cash to be able to bid well if they wanted to go that way.

Who actually would pay extra for football on TV ?
People that live outside their home teams market and want to be able to watch the game?

Redzone is great for seeing every scoring drive. Especially useful if you have a fantasy team.

i chose to spend money on sports as that's all i generally watch.
