My mom wants an Apple TV, so I hope this is true.
Seems like any improvements would likely be of little use to anyone without the latest in fancy A/V equipment - hence a lot of befuddled posts in this thread of people trying to figure out what, practically speaking, will likely be in the new box. HDMI 2.1 is nice and all, but most people can’t really take advantage of it (and most never will). Unlikely they support Google’s preferred codecs. So maybe it will be optimized for Apple Arcade in some way? (Come with a controller? More storage?). Maybe a new form factor? Guess we will see.

Though I’m predicting a Nearly identical box, hdmi 2.1 support with higher frame rate And dynamic HDR. Probably QMS, too. That’s about it. Not much difference for most users.

My only issue is spending that money on a 2 year old device. Maybe with the release of a new one, the previous one will drop in price.

Ah, good point. Though I suspect you’d have to act fast, as I doubt they’d continue making both. Though maybe the old 4K moves into the slot currently occupied by the HD?

There's no way the next new headphones aren't the next iteration of the Studios. But there's not a chance in hell they'll be worth 400 dollars.

my issue with Apple TV is my LG C9's built in apps are more than sufficient and Apple TV really offers me nothing. All I need is a 4X BluRay player and Apple will never go that route. Hell the Roku built in the silly cheap 55 Sharp 4k we have in the exercise room is as good as the Apple TV but better because it is 4k native; same as C9 which uses WebOS
My Samsung‘s apps and UI were eventually never able to be updated again. But I get what you mean, and that’s probably why Apple is making the Apple TV software and airplay available to TV vendors.

But yeah, unless Apple is adding significan gaming capabilities most people are not really going to need to buy the box.

My ATV4K slows to a crawl when swiping through titles in the Netflix app. It gets very laggy sometimes, I have no idea why or what this is but it’s incredibly frustrating. I’m all for a new more powerful ATV that fixes this.

Anyone else have that odd laggy slowdown on Netflix?
Yep it's the same for me with my ATV HD. After a few days the app gets sluggish, and only a restart of the app really helps. Sometimes I need to restart the device as well. Only Netflix though!

I agree Apple needs to make a compelling offering with their next AppleTV.

Too many other options and built-in Smart TV sets that do the same for much less.
Not sure if AirPlay and AppleTV+, Arcade is enough for existing owners to upgrade. Perhaps those looking for their first, but please price it reasonably affordable.

It's understandable, but there are a few benefits:

- The Apple TV is better supported and won't stop receiving firmware and app updates in one or two years like most TVs
- There are a lot more apps available
- The UI is arguably superior
- It integrates into the Apple ecosystem (e.g. you can automatically set it up with an iPhone, or use it as a Homekit hub)
- Smart TVs are a security and privacy nightmare

It’s also far easier to integrate into traditional home theater setups (the kind with an A/V receiver that handles the HDMI switching and sends audio to external speakers by wire). It also has a much bigger app ecosystem - there are a million threads on here like “why won’t my 2018 LG get app XXX?”

I will still hook up an Apple TV to my smart tv and run the apps from there, if only for privacy concerns.

Target's inventory system may be leaking details on upcoming Apple products that are set to be released in the near future. A listing for "Airpods (X Generation)" with a price tag of $399 popped up this morning, and there are also apparently new listings for "Apple TV Gen X," "Apple iPod Touch X Generation" and "Apple Watch Series X" bands.

target-inventory-apple-tv.jpg

Target employees sent images of the listings to 9to5Mac. These are all placeholder names and could be representative of future products, though it's not clear if that's the case. We don't know what these listings are, why they're in Target's system, or if they're accurate, so the information should not be taken as concrete evidence of new devices.

The Apple TV Gen X lists a price of $180, the Apple iPod Touch X Generation lists a price of $400, and the Apple Watch Series X band prices are listed at $50.

There haven't been rumors of an upgraded iPod Touch, and the iPod touch last saw a refresh in May 2019, so it's not clear if the $399 iPod touch listing is correct. Pricing on the iPod touch starts at $199, and while it does go up to $399, that's for the high capacity model. We are expecting a new low-cost iPhone with a starting price point of $399, so there is a possibility that the iPod touch placeholder is for an iPhone and not an iPod. It could also be for a refreshed 256GB iPod touch, or the price could be wrong entirely since it's a placeholder.

We've seen multiple previous hints of a new Apple TV in the works in iOS 13 releases, with the device featuring an upgraded A12 Bionic chip. $179 is the price point of the 32GB 4K Apple TV, so it's possible that this listing is more evidence of the imminent release of a new Apple TV model.

The Apple Watch band listings are also easily explainable as Apple refreshes its Apple Watch band offerings on a regular basis, typically with every Apple event. Apple has held events in March for the last few years, and rumors suggest that we're getting a late March event this year, perhaps on March 31st.

If there is indeed a March 31st event, we could see some of the products listed in Target's inventory. Rumors have suggested the new low-cost iPhone will be a highlight at the event, and an Apple TV, an updated iPad Pro, and the rumored AirTags are also possible new products that could debut next month.

Maybe they just named it "X" because the don't have a clue what Apple is coming out with........

I'm hoping for a neXt generation Apple Watch.
Star Trek Next Generation came out over thirty years ago. Perhaps it’s time to move on from that (marketing tie-in) vision of the future.

Apple Watch Pro is so much more mature.

Oh thank god we’re maybe finally getting a new Apple TV.

Even if it’s the same thing with a CPU multiple years newer it needs to happen. I hope the remote gets tossed for something better and that uses normal batteries, and I’d actually like integrated voice control like amazon has had for two years...they need a cheaper product that does that anyway. I’d put that at 5% chance though.

I’d like to see Apple take on Logitech harmony for a more programable remote. Also a built-in remote speaker that can output noise when lost. I often just use my phone to navigate until I find it (likely in the sofa but not always). Funny thing is I put a Tile sticker on the remote and now it almost never gets lost. The bulkier form better prevents slipping into the sofa.

Pairing 2 Bluetooth headphones/AirPods would be awesome for late night movies while the kids sleep.

WiFi 6 and maybe WPA3 support
