I tried out the new Apple TV for a day or so to see if it works. It doesn't work as well as the old one for clicking forward or back 10 seconds, but then there is the scrubbing function, which works with a preview some the time. I was watching the PGA yesterday, which was being recorded and I tried it, but it was spastic. Formula 1 on Apple TV didn't work at all.
Are you talking about Airplaying F1TV to the Apple TV? It worked fine for me. Scrubbing was great too. I wouldn't expect previews for Airplay video.

Apple need to enforce the use of standard UI components the same way they do in CarPlay so that features work consistently across the system and the user doesn’t have to learn ten different interfaces.

we all miss Forstall

Disappointing news!

I wanted to get the remote for my current ATV as my Mrs hates it and thinks it’s too sensitive, and for me it doesn’t work probably with YouTube.

I’ll stick with what I have at the minute I guess, £60 is expensive for something that's not outright better than what i already have.
Don’t let this thread get you down. Those of us who desperately missed the scroll wheel were hoping this did the same thing, and it doesn’t. That’s genuinely disappointing and a big miss on Apple’s part. (But maybe fixable via software?)

HOWEVER, the remote is still way better than the prior one. You can still use it is a trackpad (like the previous one), and the new D-pad buttons are nice for the non-Apple-inclined. The additional mute and power-on buttons are also great, and the circular scrolling is useful for scrubbing where it is supported by apps. Does it measure up to Apple’s great designs? No. Is it a significant improvement over the very poor design that preceded it? In my view, yes.

Use the left and right buttons for that; same functionality as the previous remote's touchscreen-edges.
That doesn't work, before you could click to skip 10 seconds across all apps, but now when clicking (at least in youtube, infuse, disney+ etc) it just pauses the content and brings up the scroll wheel.
It also starts to auto fast-forward when using infuse which is really annoying.

The gesture in the video is what I tried as well. Didnt Apple think that is what most people would do? And to rewind you would do the same in opposite direction. It is odd the method they went with.

It’s interesting that so many readers come here looking for information from your writers who have equipment in their hands to be able to test and then write full articles about their honest observations but failed to mention this issue which is pretty obvious is really just serving us BS and pumping tires of flawed items.
I guess lesson learned here is outlets such as this one would rather perpetuate a narrative of all is good than tell it the way it is even if the company suppling you with an item to review disagrees enough with your review that they black list you. Then that will mean you’d have to work harder to get content and these days, who wants to make an honest living working hard when there are easier ways to do that?

It's not IR... Since apple tv doesn't have IR.. It uses the IR for controlling the tv, mute/volume/etc just like the apple remote does..

Apple TV **does** have IR -- that's why you can use the original Aluminum remote with it (which was IR only)

Infuse was fixed today

maybe try a restart or something. Just checked again and the Left and Right buttons work perfectly here on the YouTube app. I don't have Infuse or Disney+, but they're also working on Hulu, Paramount, Peacock, HBOMax, etc.

Just got my remote today. Love it. It immediately turned my TV on and Apple TV 4K (2017) before it prompted me to pair interestingly. Really like the feel of the remote and love that I can turn my TV off with the Apple TV remote now. Feels rock solid and find the controls easy to use thus far. Regardless of its limitations, it's a step up from the previous remote and since I got it through Verizon for $49.99, I saved $10 making it even more worth it.

which device did you end up using for it? I tried a bunch but couldn’t find one that worked correctly.

We cut the cord and ATV is now the only video input we use, so we’re trialling just using the apple remote and CEC. I must say, it’s novel having access to the Siri features for once. I still have the harmony elite EU replace all the individual appliances but it’s definitely nice having a simpler remote (especially when we won’t have to explain to people who come over how to use it if it goes out of sync etc)
To setup my Harmony Hub and remote to work in bluetooth mode with Apple TV I followed the instructions here.

Apple had perfected scrubbing on a circular touchpad a decade ago with the iPod.
This solution of only moving half circles to scrub is worse than a decade-old solution.
I hope they update the firmware to fine-tune this.

The scroll wheel is broken. According to Gruber it works exactly like an iPod wheel: you scroll through lists by spinning around in a circle - except you don't. You spin around back and forth in a circle. In no lists does this work at all, not in the main menu, not in the TV app, not in horisontal lists like the settings app. I'm baffled, it's completely unintuitive. Is there a setting I am missing?

And yes, I get the activating scrub controls by pausing, then holding on the circle until the circle scrub icon comes up - again COMPLETELY UNINTUITIVE. This should be DEFAULT behaviour, both for scrolling lists and scrubbing. What's the point of having a touch wheel if it doesn't work like a touch wheel?

Nope, you're right and I think Gruber got it wrong. I've seen nowhere that corroborates his claim.

Touch features seem to be oversensitive, but all in all an improvement over the 1st gen. Mainly because of the mute button and off button. The touch area should have been a lot bigger.
I think the remote is much better. And the circular gesture may not work for YouTubeTV but tap 10 sec forward/back and swipe left right work just fine. I may never use the circular fine scrubbing but I am sure YouTube will get it eventually.

Not sure why you would want to use the wheel in lists. Just swipe in the actual direction you want to scroll.

I don't know why anyone would want to scroll through menus using the scroll wheel. I get horizontal lists, but outside of that and actual scrubbing, I prefer swiping to navigate, it is so much quicker, scrubbing seems silly to move left to right. like using a rotary phone to turn the dial.

You prefer swipe lift swipe lift swipe lift swipe lift swipe lift swipe to a smooth continuous motion? I guess we found the guy who never had an iPod.

I suppose if you are trying to find a very specific scene on the scrubber that might be useful, but one swipe can go 15 minutes, at least in YouTube TV. I am not saying I won't use that feature but it's not a deal breaker. I had an iPod, yet I don't see myself using this for lists.

I don't care which way it's done, as long as someone tells us the way we have to do it. #YouAreScrollingWrong?

And I did, but hooking my iPod up to my Toyota, pre-carplay, and it took FOREVER to get to the S's from the A's. Like almost literally FOREVER. Never tried any other way, didn't know if there was another way. I was frankly grateful that the iPod still would work on a 'new' car audio system. (It was newer than the iPod)

Can confirm this works, set up my new Apple TV 4K and it works, completely shuts off correctly when switching activities or turning off. Moreover, connection over Bluetooth is lightning fast.

A shame Apple didn't buy Harmony, universal remotes are dead now.
