Re: the image in the article
I can see why hand models are a thing.. those nails and nail bands! WOW. Nails clipped down to what seems to be a perfect millimeter or so.

I wonder how hand models actually look beyond just their hands.

Looks to be a very healthy individual. Or it could be a trick and be a "demo-hand" just molded to do what ever.

Actually. It does! You can click the center button and use the left/right click to rewind/advance or….

Click to pause then use the circular outer ring to swipe clockwise to advance or counter clockwise to rewind…

The key to getting the outer swipe to work right is….Swiping clockwise, you can’t go past 90 degrees at the bottom or you will start rewinding…So swiping from 0 to 90 advances or swiping counter clockwise from 0 to -90 rewinds….If you do a fully circular motion it will advance then rewind….

That's not actually the same thing. You can tell because the little jog wheel icon doesn't show up. What you're explaining is just translating the circular motion on a trackpad into a circular motion in the UI.

Had no idea this new remote would have such mixed reviews because it has a long delay in shipping in the Apple Store App and no stock at local stores. Think I'll hold out for now upgrading until I have to.

Lost the remote to my 3rd gen Apple TV years ago. Have a feeling it’s just so in deep in our couch, will slash the sucker open the day I toss it.

They look like David Duchovny

I really wish someone made a third party bluetooth enabled version of something like that.

All of our ATV's are mounted and tucked away and out of line of sight and thus IR only isn't an option. :(

It's not IR... Since apple tv doesn't have IR.. It uses the IR for controlling the tv, mute/volume/etc just like the apple remote does..

I also noticed this scrolling wheel issue this weekend but overall I have to say that the new remote is a considerable improvement on the previous version.

I never use a first-party remote - I have a Harmony Hub and use my Harmony remote with my new Apple TV in Bluetooth mode. I wish I could have bought the ATV without such an expensive remote since it will be consigned to a drawer. I did have a go with it and much prefer the older remote TBH.
which device did you end up using for it? I tried a bunch but couldn’t find one that worked correctly.

We cut the cord and ATV is now the only video input we use, so we’re trialling just using the apple remote and CEC. I must say, it’s novel having access to the Siri features for once. I still have the harmony elite EU replace all the individual appliances but it’s definitely nice having a simpler remote (especially when we won’t have to explain to people who come over how to use it if it goes out of sync etc)

Disappointing news!

I wanted to get the remote for my current ATV as my Mrs hates it and thinks it’s too sensitive, and for me it doesn’t work probably with YouTube.

I’ll stick with what I have at the minute I guess, £60 is expensive for something that's not outright better than what i already have.

Like human beings?!? Some can be really good looking but the wrong size for other model work, some considered 'too old' (over 29...!) and get paid more as special hand model anyway so very happy to grow old behind the camera.

Is the Apple TV team so small that they didn't have time or care to test it out? They had 6 years to update this remote.
It works as intended, the article shows that there are instructions that explain how to do it. If you follow the ipo structures it works. It changed from previous behavior and some people are confused. It’s not a care or test problem.

Think of it this way: if I give you the following instructions wrt to contributing to forums:
1. Read the article
2. Understand the article
3. Leave a comment

and you ignore step 1, or 2 or both, would it be my fault if your comment ends up not making sense?

I tried out the new Apple TV for a day or so to see if it works. It doesn't work as well as the old one for clicking forward or back 10 seconds, but then there is the scrubbing function, which works with a preview some the time. I was watching the PGA yesterday, which was being recorded and I tried it, but it was spastic. Formula 1 on Apple TV didn't work at all.

It’s early days , once everyone updates their apps I’m sure there’ll be a notable improvement… hopefully 🙏

The new Apple. Obviously they don’t test their software, now they start also not testing the hardware. Nice. Looking forward for the new iPhones… unbelievable…

You're scrubbing it wrong. Scrubgate 2021!

Just tried it. Seems to work fine for me.

The redesigned remote is 90% of the reason people are buying this thing. Apple appreciated this as they already sell the 2nd gen remote as a standalone. After all these years, and knowing the main desire to upgrade, why is the design still awkward?
Apple customers just keep using it wrong.

Thank you, MacRumors! I was having this exact problem and was getting very frustrated that it wasn't working as intended.

If you aks me the biggest problem is there's just one option to enable/disable touch. I'd like to disable it in menus, but enable it in video playback.
