I appreciate that Apple has been working to expand their library. However, there still isn't enough content selection (that I would probably watch) for me to pay $99. Maybe that will change down the line but, for now, I will stick with Plex.
Not $99 for me either, I agree. However, for one or two months with more free time, like this summer, it can be a good deal if you’re into the genres they touch with their shows.

This past month of July I saw: Severance Seasons 1&2, Silo Seasons 1&2, and Invasion Seasons 1&2. I still have to watch the second season of Foundation but the first one is quite amazing. If you’re into sci fi and like binge-watching series, there’s interesting enough content to enjoy in summer. Also some movies like Luck are quite nice.

But that’s all, once seen all this shows I haven’t renewed my subscription. At the current prices, what this companies are achieving is to make us pay for one or two months and then cancel the subscription and maybe subscribe to a different service. Or none at all. There must be a price ceiling… at any point. I don’t think they can eternally keep raising prices at this rate.

I unsubscribed years ago with the last price increase. These streaming service prices have gotten ridiculous and I refuse to get ripped off from these billion dollar streaming services. It comes to a point where it’s about integrity

Starting next month (ok, October) Apple TV+ and Apple Music are free for people who have the Chase Saphhire Reserve card.. yeah the annual fee goes up to ~ 695? Which is a TON except that one easily can get 300-400$ worth of freebies AND these two plans are now going to add up to ~$300..

It’s been rumored that Apple Card is going to move to CHASE as the banker of record, I wonder. Hmmmm could it BE with the intention of driving more ppl to that card vs. the Apple Card, or maybe a bit of “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine?”

Apple today raised the monthly price of its Apple TV+ streaming service to $12.99 in the U.S., according to 9to5Mac's Benjamin Mayo.

Apple TV+ cost just $4.99 per month in the U.S. when it launched in 2019, but the price has now increased three times. The price went up to $6.99 per month in 2022, and then to $9.99 per month in 2023, and now the service costs $12.99 per month. The latest price increase applies to select other countries too.

An annual subscription to Apple TV+ will continue to cost $99 in the U.S., and Apple One bundle prices are not changing, the report said.

The new price is effective immediately for new Apple TV+ subscribers, but various free trial options remain available. For existing subscribers, the price increase will take effect 30 days after their next renewal date, the report said.

In a statement shared with 9to5Mac, Apple attempted to justify the price increase by noting that it has continued to expand its library of original content, and it touted the value of its Apple One plans with multiple Apple services.

Many other streaming services like Disney+ and Netflix have raised prices in recent years.

I got promotional renewal at $4.99 a month for 2 months, cancelling after seeing this increase. Also cancelled Peacock this month. If I see a price increase announcement and I am not watching anything current on it to make me stay, its getting cancelled.

It is a bit of an ask…

And people swapped from Netflix over to this because they didn't increase prices 🤣
All streaming services end up like this, you own nothing and you will pay out of the ass eventually
Years ago I switched from Netflix to Criterion Channel when they broke out on their own again.
Still have it, still under $100 a year. Still no ads. Still only watch movies a few times a month :D But, still worth it.

I've seen and watched a few movies on ATV+ recently but they don't have many, and it doesn't appear like they have a big pool of movies that never leave (besides Peanuts stuff, maybe). So I didn't renew. If they get a bunch, I can always add the channel back to Prime for a single month. If I were to get another ongoing subscription at this point, I think Film Movement or Mubi would make a lot more sense.

As far as owning stuff, I have a lot of discs I never watch or listen to. Probably why I keep thinking I'm going to build a Jellyfin server, but never find the time. Some of the stuff I watch on Criterion Channel I own, but it's just easier to stream, the same way many people with album collections find themselves still using Spotify or Pandora or Apple Music. Having a big collection becomes a liability, especially when you have to move.

How are yall complaining when ATV+ is like the lowest priced service??? If you dont appreciate the attention to detail, art and presentation with a lot of their content maybe you won't understand where their value is but either way when did we know apple to be on the cheeper end of things honestly?

Good times when Steve Jobs decided to innovate and put music songs at 99c
This was a revolutionary idea and stopped the piracy pretty much
Now Tim doesn't care and
from what I'm reading a bunch of people are choosing alternative methods ...

Was this sarcasm?

It made piracy easier and gave me better quality MP3's.

What cut down on it was streaming(Apple, Spotify, Tidal), because for $9.99 and the amount available it made downloading music not even worth it.

The opposite is happening now as streaming services keep raising prices. Streaming movies and tv shows has increased.

They've raised it $6 whole dollars in the past few years. Certainly not unreasonable. They have the most bang for the buck. And Apple+ has the best Sci-Fi of any of the streamers and they don't cancel those shows after one year (for the most part). Further, they don't have tiers - everyone is ad free and gets 4K.
Almost 100% increase isn't unreasonable?

Maybe if more people complained (unlike you) or just quit, then these billion dollar companies that rake in record profits every quarter might think twice before raising prices.

They let the success of their F1 movie go to their head and genuinely believe that people are willing to throw money hand over fist at thier content.

Maybe if they didn’t waste money buying expensive content like MLS soccer that most people don’t want they could keep the prices low? I only watch For All Mankind, The Morning Show, and Invasion and the occasional original Apple produced movie. Currently getting it for free via Tmobile. If I have to pay for it I’ll cancel and just dust off the tricorne.

Apple needs to put a minimum term on the monthly subscription to shut down churn. And the minimum term pricing should allow for one price increase every 12 months without an exit clause.

Mint mobile, US mobile, visible all have 12 month deals in the $17-$19 range.
Mint is $15 if you pay for a full year in advance. I’ve had Mint on a second line for a couple of years because it gives me unlimited calling to Europe - which is the only reason I have it.

It’s a lot cheaper than the $40/month I paid to Vonage for international for over a decade.

Of course, in it’s time, Vonage was way cheaper than what the US telcos were charging for international back in the 2000’s and 2010’s)

Times change.
