Apple ranked behind the competition for something? That's weird. I would have never guessed.

Read the article that is linked. Most of the sales are sticks which Apple doesn't offer. When you consider just boxes, Apple is tied in first with Roku. I don't see Apple getting into the stick business as they are underpowered and provide an awful user experience.

No Amazon Prime really sucks. I know it's Amazon's fault, but it is a reason not to get Apple TV, like it or not.

Also, my Apple TV does not function on Wi-Fi. Never had that problem with Roku. I know my router probably isn't ideal, but it's a negative to it for me.

I own a ATV2, also Roku 4K by the way looks amazing and a Amazon Fire Stick. The ATV2 hook up to a 4K TV looks great, the reason I purchase the ATV4 32 Gig was because it was on sale at Best Buy the interface and Bluetooth keyboard is a good function. It's a shame Amazon haven't make an app for the ATV4 it would be great. Although the Roku 4K has other channels that ATV4 does not have.

Apple really dragged its feet on their Apple TV. These devices are the foreseeable future of television and offer incredible growth.

But like all companies who have tunnel vision on established bread and butter products, they can't see anything else around it. Whether you are in the typewriter business, photocopiers, film, desktop computers, newspapers, blackberries or iPhones

Good point. I agree.

Definitely needs 4k support and also a little refinement on the remote. It is just not as fast and accurate as I would have hoped.

Wouldn't hurt to open up universal search a little more. Drooling for the day it is opened up to Plex!

I use my Roku 3 a lot more than my 4th gen ATV. In a few minutes I plan to turn on my ATV 4...just to update it to the latest firmware. Then it's back to my Roku. I don't think having 4K would've made a big difference with the ATV 4's 4th place ranking. Now, pricing the 32GB ATV 4 at $79 and 64GB at $129 probably would have (discontinuing the ATV 3) moved it to at least 2nd place after Roku.

How many 4K TVs are actually being sold every quarter? 4K content is still pretty limited as well.

By that logic, the USB-C connector was a really poor choice for the MacBook too... As was the lightning port move, and original USB even... or devices with multi-touch touchscreen covering the entire front of the device.

In general the ATV4 is just underwhelming for the amount of time Apple had between ATV2/3 and ATV4 to make a real stunner. Instead, with the ATV4, we got something that would have been decently compelling in 2013 that is beaten handily in price and features in 2015.

Pretty much a 3 way tie for second.

Why stop there with 8% diff, might as well call it 4 way tie for first ;)

Still really poor for Apple, as a large number of Apple users don't use Apple TV.

I really like mine, but just cause of infuse , one app. Take infuse away and it never use it

Just started setting up the nvidia shield TV, far superior.

I still have two of them but have since moved to Roku, much more flexible, allowing you to watch your own movies through DLNA and Plex. Apple is lagging in this area, you have to let people stream their own content without locking them into your convoluted ecosystem.

Well, that's what year-over-year sales figures do most of the time.

This makes sense for products that are released about every year. It just seems kind of pointless for the ATVs situation. Would they do the same for the dated TB Display if Apple Released a new one? IDK.

Keep in mind, these percentages are from 2015. It's been a few months, and assuming Apple's growth continued its safe to assume they're at least tied or even ahead of Google and Amazon.

Apple is a niche of the market...market share wise. It's not surprising the apple tv is as well. Premium brand, ecosystem has low market share.

What's always more important is how much revenue, margins, etc compared to those others. If Apple was going for share, they'd lower prices and offer more variety. That's not Apple.

That said, I like the apps on atv3 much better. Siri isn't used by me on atv4. Plex and a few other features are the only reasons I still have it. Apple has a lot of work to do. Apps like netflix still crash too much and they pale to atv3's.

Apple you can do better. Just don't abandon it like Siri, improve, improve and improve. Innovate.

Vudu already CONFIRMED that Apple won't allow it

they are a streaming service, not a hardware company, why on earth would they not want it on Apple TV when it's on every other device that allows it?

it's just Apple pushing iTunes movies

And yet they allow Hulu and Netflix, who are also both streaming companies with content available on the iTunes Store.

Agreed. I switched back to the ATV3 just because of the Apps. The Netflix app on the ATV4, while it looks nice, navigating it is not very good. What happened to genres?

I would like to see some worldwide data.

Some companies positions themselves globally and some are highly U.S. centric. Also some overall marketshare would be nice, not just 2015 sales.

Absolutely love the Apple TV, though one of my friends has a Chromecast which works really well, too. Though I prefer the Apple TV because it doesn't rely on my phone for everything.

No Amazon Prime means no sale on Apple TV. I rather go with the platform that offers EVERYTHING I want, not some high and mighty, you get what we give you walled garden. Sorry Apple. Roku is 4K and apps to boot. Apple is so far behind in everything they do, it's not even funny.

How many 4K TVs are actually being sold every quarter?

All of them. I'm surprised to see people continue to ask this question. Almost every new TV over 40" is 4K with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2

Aside, I use my Apple TV as my primary video source, but a few things really grate on me:
- The remote is generally a headache. I always try to use it backwards in the dark. It has too many (non-backlit) buttons, and I always hit the wrong one.
- AppleTV's Siri is dumb as a rock. I have to think very hard about what Siri can do and rephrase things repeatedly to make it work.
- No HomeKit support. Guess I'm going to have to get an Amazon Echo to control my lights.
- AirPlay feels half-assed. If I AirPlay to my receiver I can control receiver volume with my phone; if I AirPlay to AppleTV I can't. If I do something like AirPlay Apple Music from my phone, I want the AppleTV to take over. Instead the AppleTV tries to revert back to the music it was playing before the phone constantly.
- The dictation support.... try dictating the word "Hue". You get "H you E" in the search box, every time.

Honestly, it just doesn't feel like anyone at Apple put all that much personal energy into the AppleTV, other than the aesthetic design. It still works just better enough with my other Apple devices that I'm not ready to jump ship yet though.

I stream Netflix, HBO Go, YouTube, etc., directly through my Samsung TV. The Apple TV Gen 2 is somewhere in the cabinet.

These numbers were put together to make Apple look good:

1) Google on the pie chart only represents the sales of Chromecast sticks.

2) No mention of Android TV devices or even smart TVs. If those numbers were accounted for I'm certain the ATV would be in a much lower position since every TV sold today has some sort of streaming functionality.

3) No mention in growth of any other manufacturer

I forth the 4K argument. While 4K is not yet a majority, as an owner of 4K HDR TV, I am hesitant of adding non-4K set top box to tee mix. While at it, I want Apple to add:
  • HDR10 and/or Dolby Vision support
  • Improved Siri remote with better click mechanism, sturdier case, Find My Remote alert, and asymmetric button layout
  • Always on mic on the base unit for Always On Siri
  • Optical audio output for speakers (and to help with Always On Siri)
