I was pumped to buy one before it came out but after hearing the price I just couldn't justify $200 Canadian for an apple tv when I have so many other devices to play Netflix

If you only plan on using Netflix, I recommend the ATV3. It is not nearly as expensive and the ATV3 Netflix UI is superior to the ATV4 imo.

Casual gamers have an excellent alternative in the nvidia shield TV, far superior as a steamer and a gaming solution to the ATV. If you wanted casual gaming , it's the clear winner.

Amazon will not release an Amazon app for iOS, they have too much invested in Prime, new top gear spin off etc, and will want to sell their own boxes. Slowly they are creating thier own ecosystem, an app for iOS would undo that, instead they offer a damn cheap firestick if you want to get into the ecosystem , something apple cannot do...thier entry box is $$$.

Be interesting what the top gear spin off does for sales numbers....I can see quite a few apple fans who like topgear getting a Amazon device to watch the show .

I understand your point but the evidence says otherwise-

Amazon is on competitors phones, tablets, Rokus., PS4's etc. I don't think that's it.

lol @ Nvidia Shield, casual gamers are they same as casual shoppers- they've never heard of it.

Amazon have not got an app on the android TV app store. It is only available on the Fire devices, also on Android tablets and phones and even then it's a right faff, it doesn't even update through the Android app store so you have to change the security settings to allow apps from other sources to ON just to update it!

If you want to use Amazon Prime, it is VERY clear the best way to do it is on one of Amazon's OWN devices.

Oh and as for your lol @ Nvidia Shield, it is the best device for casual gamers, I've been playing Borderlands The Pre-Sequel and Metal Gear Rising Revengeance on mine happily, plus you can stream great AAA titles at 1080P and 60 frames per second to it! For a cheap monthly fee.
And you won't get any of that on other streaming devices.
It is considered the reference device for streamers because of it's powerful hardware, so yes plenty of people know about it.

I use Roku because it was given to us, use xBox because we already had it, use Chromecast it was a gift, and use smart TV because want it or not the feature was included. I would use an Apple TV but I have not needed to buy one with all the other options already here at the house. I watch more on my iPad and Mac's than on my TV. Don't know why with the smaller screens but its what I seem to do most lately.

It would probably be #1 if it worked better: WiFi problems, video stuttering (I'm looking at you YouTube), multiple iTunes interface (home sharing) issues, no 4k support, no digital audio output. Yeah I bought one, but not at all happy with it.

That is a pretty solid sales increase given the much lower priced competition. Question is the continuing growth rate as I'm sure a lot of those sales were upgrades from Apple 2 and 3s. Initially I didn't buy one b/c of the price but jumped on a one day Target sale when the 32GB was $109 or something. I believe Radio Shack had a similar sale. I think unless Apple provides a unique bundle of channels this sales jump might be a one-off. Personally I mostly use my ATV4 for it's Airplay ability, something ATV2 and 3 also do just fine for less money.

4K, return optical audio out, and thrown in a current Ax processor please, headphones that can plug into the remote :)
but really I would buy one if we didn't already own a Roku before Apple updated the AppleTV.
Whoa whoa, they chucked optical-out on the new one?? Lameness

Get some Bluetooth headphones. Well worth the money

I'm not judging the Shield as a device, but it has no brand name power ie- Sony, MS, Nintendo, Apple etc.

I'm sorry, but the Amazon Prime video app on my Samsung tv, my Roku, My PS4, my iPhone and iPad works great. It gets updates and and don't have to change any settings.

Amazon must not like Android for some reason, or it's a badly written app.

I think we will still see a streaming TV service from Apple. Everyone's doing it now...Dish and Sony have already launched their services, DirecTV's service is due at the end of the year, and Hulu's is coming next year.

On the contrary, if you game you know about the nvidia shield tablet and TV, it's got a very good reputation. It's also got an excellent reputation amongst hardcore hifi/media enthusiasts as it's the best streamer.

It's Mac people who have not heard of nvidia shield ..... Cause, well gaming is not a Mac strong point ;)

I can tell you that people go and get the Amazon Fire Stick because they hear that it can be "hacked" to watch free movies and cable TV. I work at Best Buy and we sell through so many because of this that there is a limit on the amount of fire sticks we can sell per customer.

Same as a jailbroken iOS device.

It is a known device, but obviously not as much as the Fire TV or an Xbox or PS4 because of advertising so that's true, I don't think Apple advertises the Apple TV in the UK?
I find the PS4 app very clunky, and how do you update it on the Roku? Doesn't that run Android?

It is stupid because all the Fire devices made by Amazon run on their forked version of Android. I feel they do it deliberately, don't want to give it all to their competitors.

Apple doesn't allow Ultra Violet/Vudu or Amazon Prime

What is your basis for saying Apple "doesn't allow?"

Everything I see says Apple would be happy to allow those apps, on the same terms and conditions of every other app. It seems to me that Amazon and UV just don't want to agree to those terms.

LOL that is good point on Mac users.

Hardcore is not the average consumer. Hardcore is small minority. If you asked people on the street , at least 9 out 10 people have never heard of Nvidia - they HAVE heard of Sony, Apple, Amazon, MS, etc.

I don't know but it has updated on my PS4. No one outside of hardcore enthusiast know Nvidia. The vast majority have no idea who or what Nvidia is. If you asked everyday average consumers ( the vast majority ), it would go like this -

"Have you ever head of Sony?" "Yes"

"Have you ever head of Amazon?" "Yes"

"Have you ever head of Google?" "Yes"

"Have you ever heard of Nvidia?" "Who?"

Those of us who post here are an even SMALLER minority. People who build their own PCs, or read all this stuff and follow it, etc.

You sell through so many because they are a fraction of the cost of other options, offer all major services, and are dead simple to install and use. The percentage of people "hacking" them to watch "free movies" is minuscule, because though it is not exceptionally difficult to do, it isn't exceptionally easy either and requires a fair bit of experience and savvy to do so without bricking the thing.

I like my ATV 4 and like seeing Apple continue to invest in upgrading the features. Here are a few nice additions for the future if you are interested -

1. Adding a earphone jack to the remote (a la Roku) - well I guess with the lightning port maybe they already have it and just need to enable it.
2. Better controller support for gaming. I tried a couple in store and found them not great and the remote is terrible for all but a few basic games.
3. Better deals with providers so that their apps work without having to log into my non-existing cable account.
4. Amazon Prime (I know this is an Amazon problem not Apple, but still want it).
5. Homekit App to control things though the TV. Actually would love some integration that could set the lights and sounds based on what was playing.
Bluetooth audio works great on the Apple TV. You're never going to get a headphone jack. Also I don't think the remote could power a lightning headphones for very long if at all.
HBO and showtime are already available without cable. Not much anyone can do about the rest due to existing cable contracts.

Need more streaming choices like Apps from Dishnetwork SLING, Comcast Xfinity, TWC anywhere,(Amazon - not going to happen). Apple-TV foremost is Apps based streaming device and than other goodies like casual gaming platform.Homekit,etc. So, Apple needs to bring multiple skinny streaming packages with local and international channels. Similar to dish SLING App streaming where you buy $20 or so skinny package and than additional cost for your pick and choose channels on top...Than, slowly add Netflix like, offer original shows. and Apple-TV will be king of the streaming world in Living and Bedrooms.

Who cares, 4K as far as I am concerned is right up there with curves screens, 3D, etc etc etc. With moving objects they eye is simply not fast enough to keep track so the brain cheats and creates filler based on what it previously saw.
High res is NOT going to improve that. If you want to spend you time looking at stills, go for it, anything else is just a lie.

Wow. what a load of rubbish. Since when has resolution got anything to do with perceptive speed. Even if it were true - Zod forbid anyone might watch something slow and 4k.

Hope you enjoy your 480i CRT - probably black and white because, you know, colour is just pointless information.

Skeptical of Siri on the Apple TV? It's the killer feature! Just some of the cool stuff you can do:

1) Play latest episode of a TV series without opening the app first. Example: Say "Show the latest episode of Game of Thrones" (need HBO Now/Go app)

2) Play specific episode of a TV series without opening the app first. Example: Say "Play Game of Thrones, season 2, episode 3" (need HBO Now/Go app)

3) Go straight to a live stream without opening the app first. Example: Say "Watch ESPN live" or "Watch ESPN2 live" (need ESPN app)

4) Get the starting time and broadcast channel of any sports game. Example: Say "When does the game start?" It will bring up all the sports and all the games playing that day along with what channel they are on. Or just a specific sport "When does the basketball game start?"

5) Easily rewind video when you didn't hear what a character said. Example: Say "What did he say?" It rewinds 15 seconds, turns on close captioning, and then turns it off automatically when done.

6) Find out who stars in what you are watching. Example: "Who stars in this?" The names and pictures of the actors appear at the bottom of the screen.

7) Search within a specific app without opening the app first. Example: Say "Show me comedies on Hulu"

...and much more and I'm not even including Apple Music examples.

Without good support on progressive conversation, voice assistants are just jokes. Yes, I am talking about Siri. How often you can well construct your sentence with all of the necessary information, without too much noise information, in the first place? If I have to think very hard before asking Siri to do anything, I'd better just do it myself.

Great list!! I'm intrigued about the oculus rift controller. Seems innovative and a control for the future. Shame Apple lacks innovation..
