Mine said my new iPhone gave me a free year, and I clicked to start... it asked me to double click to confirm... and then it immediately billed my Apple Card $5.41. Is this supposed to be a temporary authorization?
That happened to me too. Only it was $19.99! Come to find out it was an App I had purchased not too long ago that took it's time going through. Somehow, signing up for the Apple TV+ triggers something and it looks like they are charging you for it but in reality it's for another item. Weird.

Yes, exactly what happened to me. Turned out it was a movie... and was same $4.99... and the charge notification came through literals the second after I double-clicked to confirm AppleTV+. So triggered so to speak. I've always been a little annoyed that charges for iTunes purchases take several days to post to my Apple Pay card and receive a notification. Everything else I buy I get an instant notification.

GAH! I know what you mean. I hate how long it takes for iTunes charges to go through. By the time they appear, I've already forgotten about it and when I get the charge I'm like "What the heck, I didn't buy anything today". So annoying.

I won't be continuing after the trial. It's a bunch of garbage. With Apple's billions, you'd think they could pay for quality shows.

The Morning Show got ripped to shreds, yikes. The last line of the review says: "Apple TV+ has raised writing to a new low."

After watching 2.5 episodes, I concur. It isn’t good. Hollow acting with shallow characters locked in bad cliche writing. There is no depth. There is no real meaning outside of which character can say the F word the most.

Expensive crap.

It’s out on MediaBox HD.

They need to improve their DRM as this is getting out of hand, Netflix, Apple, Amazon, Sky etc are going to suffer well most of them only got themselves to blame, increasing prices forcing users to have multiple services because your favourite stuff ia not on one but one is on Netflix and the other Now and the other god knows.

Apple TV+ is basically a turing test to see how far you've been indoctrinated into their cult. If you get through the trial, they know you'll buy anything.

So far Apple are 0 for 2 with their new services, + and Arcade. Not what I expected at all when they announced the services months ago.

Why wouldn't you expect it? Since when has Apple been an expert in entertainment media? When they announced it, it reeked of desperation. They have always been an expert at making refined consumer hardware. But now that's not as profitable. So they are trying to jump into other industries in a scatter brained fashion, without any focus (something Steve Jobs brought to the table). It's embarrassing.

Guess it’s not Yikes after all then? 😙 (see how useless reviews are)

A technical point for anyone that needs subtitles: they say it has closed caption CC in 8 languages, but CC doesn't work over HDMI so that won't be true on the Apple TV.
I presume these must still be available on the app via TVs that still support them.
You should still get SDH subtitles however because they are sent as images rather than instructions to be decoded.

Huh? I watched several episodes on my Apple TV and subtitles worked fine. What’s the difference between SDH and CC?

Start here:
SDH Subtitles: Guide to Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Additional searches on subject will shed even more info.

According to that site, SDH is sort of a combination of of both CC and standard subtitles, and based on the descriptions, I believe the Apple TV displays SDH, so why do you need CC?

Edit: Actually, I just checked For All ManKind on my Apple TV and there are about a million options for subtitles, including both SDH and CC, so yeah, not something to worry about.

If download the show (for offline playback), lots of subtitles disappear, is this a correct behavior?

Thanks.

They dropped the whole season of Dickinson. Thought it was only the first 3 episodes for all series.

And it is excellent to boot! It's been a pleasant surprise.

Awful interface, just like Apple News+

i hate how their shows are just thrown into the mix of everything else. It should have its own separate navigation point in the TV App. If there is, I am blind I guess.

all I saw was the morning show randomly among stuff I watched on the cw app and other stuff

I like the content (so far - Dickinson is great), but have to agree on the GUI. I'm not sure I would go so far as "awful", but it could sure stand with some improvement. Some of what is needed is basic human interface standards 101. Apple can (and should) do better.

Currently watching the free Dickinson pilot and omg how awful is Jane Krakowski in this! 5 mins in and I am waiting for her „SNL Skit“ to be over. She’s way overacting. That’s all I have to say haha

She gets much better (we are 7 episodes in, we love the show). Her role is not that large, though. Hailee Steinfeld, Ella Hunt, Anna Baryshnikov are very good in it - and Toby Huss is always good in whatever he plays in, this being no exception.

My wife and I are boomers, we don't usually go for shows targeted at tweens and YA, but we find this one to be fresh, original, well-written and well-played. I recommend you stick with it a bit longer.

So what are the more inexpensive (read: not buying Apple TV) options to watch this on a TV? I have a ChromeCast that I use for Netflix, Amazon Video, Disney+, YouTube and so forth and do not see a point in buying expensive hardware or a new TV for Apple TV+. :/

It works with Roku, Firestick 4k - each of which can be had for $40 or less.

If you don’t wanna buy a new TV or the ATV then your only option to watch it would be VPN and torrents!

Not true, not even close. You can get the app on a Firestick 4k or a Roku (and probably other devices, those are the two I know of for sure).

i watched dickinson for like three minutes and i had to turn that **** off the music was awkward as hell the direction and set design were stilted and weird the “acting” from that one 30 rock lady who played the mom was out of place the dialogue was trash man what the hell

Not for you, then. My wife and I love that show. We've watched 7 eps in 3 nights. We will probably finish this evening.

Nah, Apple is often slow with that - it's not a trigger associated with TV+ or with anything in particular. It's happened to me numerous times over the past few years. Since I'm anal about that stuff, I often check and it is nearly always a transaction I had "completed" days earlier. This is nothing new for Apple.

95% positive user reviews on RT. For what that's worth... I do tend to be more considering of user opinions than of critic opinions.

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall I had the option to set the CC before starting the download (?). So perhaps that is why? Or not ... (will have to check that again, next time I download an ATV+ title to the iPad).

It’s not like making tv shows is rocket science. Big wallet. Hired the people to do it. I’m sure Apple will eventually get a hit just like Netflix, amazon, and others. It’d be kind of crazy if they didn’t.

But there’s no money or profits in this. Ask Netflix the junk bond company. Ask AT&T as they keep shuffling things around. Ask Sony who can’t find anyone to buy Vue.

The only thing it really does for Apple is make a desperate attempt to remain relevant in selling video, in the living room (because Apple TV alone is pretty pathetic marketshare) and keeps hope alive to somehow leverage its iOS users to buy channels. Plus it gives its services a face even if atv+ has nothing to do with services growth. A good distraction.

I did go back and finish the Pilot, and while I am less sour on it now, I am still pretty confused about the show. It's very weird tonally and the decisions that are made are super strange
