Well, Apple is a US based company. I wouldn’t be surprised if their first big forays into international sports are some sort of deal with the NBA or the NHL, since those are both sports with some regional popularity abroad (and the NBA is a huge sport in the states) and they’re both the top leagues globally for those sports.

There may be some regional popularity abroad, but football (or soccer as they say in the US) is probably the most popular sport globally. That's why I feel a move into a bigger football competition than the MLS would be interesting.

You seem to ignore that football (a.k.a. soccer) is by far the most popular sport all over the world.
I do hope that the feed will be available to all non-US viewers too.
I mean no disrespect to your opinion, though. It is all just a matter of taste and were you grow up.
:)
Soccer / Football may very well be the the worlds most popular sport but in the US it is third rate due to lack of a talent pool.
The best MLS teams would have trouble competing against the average pub team from England - let alone the top Premiere league teams!

This is great. That deal LAFC had with YouTube was trash, clunky and not all the games were on the service. Even ESPN+ leaves a lot to be desired with blackouts. No Blackouts on Apple TV is a game changer.

Apple today announced a partnership with Major League Soccer that will see every single MLS match streamed through the Apple TV app for the next 10 years, with the deal to kick off in 2023.

Soccer fans will be able to stream every live match, with no local blackouts or restrictions of any kind. It will include access to all MLS and League Cup games, along with select MLS Next Pro and MLS Next matches.Apple will provide access to MLS matches through a new MLS streaming service that will be exclusively available through the Apple TV app. Along with all matches, it will include a weekly live match whip-around show and game replays, highlights, analysis, and in-depth behind-the-scenes views of players and clubs.

A selection of MLS and League Cup matches will be available at no additional cost to Apple TV+ subscribers, with a limited number of matches available for free. The new MLS streaming service will be included as part of MLS full-season ticket packages.

MLS live and on-demand content on the Apple TV app will be available on all Apple devices, along with smart TVs from companies like Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, and Vizio. The Apple TV app can also be accessed on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, Comcast Xfinity, PlayStation, and Xbox. Customers without a device that supports the Apple TV app can watch on the web.

When the service launches, all MLS and Leagues Cup matches will include announcers calling the action in English and Spanish, and all matches involving Canadian teams will be available in French. Additional details on the service, such as subscription pricing, programming information, and when fans can sign up will be announced in the coming months.

Apple says that the deal is a "historic first" for a major professional sports league, and it will last through 2032. In an effort to ramp up its sports offerings, Apple has already established a deal with Major League Baseball, and rumors suggest that it is pursuing the National Football League's Sunday Ticket package.

Do this for the NFL, with no blackouts, and my wife will LOVE Apple.

Not my thing, but I’m glad to see Apple is taking Apple TV+ seriously. I still think they should buy some studios like A24 or Sony, so they can be a real player in the streaming space.
They could also afford Netflix and it gets cheaper every day 😆

Well seeing how MLS games are starting to have more spectators than the NHL, and even some MLB games. By accounts the higher ups in the NHL are near panic of being kicked out of the top four as a result.
Interesting! But it's still a far cry from (American) football, baseball, basketball or some international football (soccer) leagues, especially in Europe.

Sadly MLS is around the 5th or 6th league in the Americas in terms of quality, the Mexican, Argentinian, Brazilian & Colombian leagues coming first IMHO. Surely for American viewers that root for a home team the MLS might have an additional appeal, but what would really put Apple TV+ in the map regarding football would be to have continental championships such as the Concacaf, Libertadores, UEFA CL & EL, etc...
I think the later-than-usual World Cup this year is going to help... if the US can put in a decent showing. Even casual, non-soccer fans tune into the World Cup, and if the US has a good run maybe that'll get just a few more people interested in soccer. I know that's the MLS's hope EVERY World Cup year, but maybe the December cup followed by the MLS season a few months later will help more...
Still... good gamble for Apple. Now get friggin Sunday Ticket already!

This is awesome news for me! 😍
No more VPN required, no more multiple subscriptions to watch MLS.

Absolute nonsense.

Although some of those leagues have bigger clubs, the general standard now is pretty low. A few teams are better than most if not all MLS teams, but generally as a whole the MLS is now probably better on average in terms of quality than those leagues.
In fact in recent years there has been rumours of some Mexican clubs defecting to the MLS.

Wow, this is really awesome. I have long been a fan of my local team in person but could never bother with watching because of the hurdle to find what where and when.

I am sure they will get many people who just want something in the background go to the Apple TV, see there is a local game and keep it on.

I love this addition, I enjoy watching football quite a bit. I wish they would get Premier League, unlikely considering all the other contracts they are involved in.

Yess ! I was expecting this to happen anytime soon !

Well yes, but getting exclusive rights to, say, Premier League games is a huge (and pricy) move, a “bet the farm” type move for Apple and sports. (Amazon, Google, Netflix, and basically every other general purpose streaming platform would be eyeing the same move, not to mention terrestrial networks in multiple countries.) Targeting the NBA especially but also NHL gives them a league with some international popularity and awareness while still being able to draw on the domestic market for viewership, and the domestic US market is probably Apple TV+‘s strongest market. Foreign soccer may cost more than it’s worth at this point, is what I’m saying.

Nah, I think the average MLS team would be able to hold their worth in the Championship.

Your comment was GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAL-LASO

Well, at least with soccer half the game isn't spent watching a player adjust his gloves, his helmet, his elbow guard, spit, scratch his balls, and check his email before every pitch. In contrast, the action is nearly constant in soccer.
Right, the players never roll around on the ground as if they just had their leg amputated. ⚽

Apple please keep your greedy mitts of European Football. I watch a bit of MLS but if I have to pay more you can keep the second rate league.
