Doesn't this streaming via VPN depend on device and service? I can connect my iPhone to a VPN server back at my house but Xfinity Stream still knows the iPhone is in Puerto Rico or wherever thus preventing its use. On my old MacBook it works but I have to change my location and time zone manually on it back to our home's. If I want to use a Chromecast with that setup, the Chromecast has to be going through the tunnel back to the house, also.
Yes different streaming services have different levels of caring where you're located, and ways of detecting it. For example a personal success was to watch a show on Channel 4 (UK) from the US, they don't seem to be super strict about it.

Also different VPN services may work better or worse too, some of them specifically advertise "works with Netflix"

my home router runs the vpn tunnel for the whole house, and I can choose our endpoint country with its app. Been using Apple TV with a vpn for years.

Interesting. I knew they were bought out a while back but I guess I never heard or looked into the details.

I may just have to think about switching VPN's then. I looked into ProtonVPN earlier and it seemed pretty on par with ExVPN. I had heard of Nord's issues but maybe I'll look at them again.
ProtonVPN is a no go. Proton is a shady, lying company. They stated on their website that they don't even track your IP. And then when they gave up a guy's IP information to authorities, among other things, they took that claim off of their website. They got a lot of crap for that. People have also run into scenarios in which Proton was able to read their encrypted email, which they specifically stated they can't. I would avoid anything related to that company like the plague. They have offices in the US, despite stating they're operating under Swiss privacy laws. They could be considered a honeypot. A government spy agency operating under the guise of encryption.

I havent had any issues with ExVPN so thats why I dont have a problem with them. Even the non-biased VPN review sites always list ExVPN at the top of their lists but in hindsight...that seems suspicious.
You should be suspicious. The VPN works as it always did before they got bought out by a data mining company. There's nothing wrong in how it operates. You press a button and it connects. But they're not a company that can be trusted anymore. Nord and Mullvad have proven themselves to be worthy of trust. Snowden specifically said you can no longer trust them after the buy out. A VPN is worthless if the company running the VPN is garbage.

Would be nice to have a network picker or the ability to choose a priority network over another.
Example: my intranet has a fixed IP address and my Internet uses my hotspot dynamic address.
My Apple TV with version 16 does not easily switch between the two networks Nor can it handle a fixed IP address for one network and a dynamic for another like the computer, my iPhone and iPad automatically handles now. And it only allows one network connection at a time where my iPhone, iPad, computer can be connected to both at the same time, the Apple TV cannot handle that.

Nope. This used to be true, but ExpressVPN was bought out by a data mining company. Snowden said to avoid them after this took place. They are complete and utter garbage and I can't recommend them anymore. You should switch to NordVPN or MullvadVPN. NordVPN has been audited for years to show they don't have any user data retention. MullvadVPN was recently raided and had zero user data to cough up. The more secure of these two is Mullvad, but the speeds are slower.

Some people have a bad taste from Nord when they were hacked and didn't let anyone know until later, but the hack didn't reveal anyone's data for the very reason they have a zero logs policy. Nothing can be tied to anyone with how their infrastructure is set up. But some people don't trust them anymore. I still don't have a problem with them. But I may go Mullvad for a while to support the smaller company.

NordVPN is trash when you try to use locations outside USA.

FYI - Unlocator smart DNS already works to let you get around the MLB.tv geo-blackouts.

Unlocator sucks on a lots of services, for example replays at Fubo, ESPN, etc.

Also unlocator sucks if your public IP changes randomly because you have to go to their website to publish your new IP, I know there's a workaround but is annoying.

The further away from your home country you try and connect to, the slower and more unstable the connection will be. Having said that, Nord has been pretty horrible lately even with local connections. They're probably overselling customers and can't meet the bandwidth demand. I often get messages about overloaded servers. I'm going to be switching soon when my subscription is up.

I have been a user since 2017, long time before the hyper-aggressive marketing campaign they started from about 2020, and sadly I have to agree.
If you're going to sponsor every single thing in existence, at least build the capacity to handle your client base.

Based on that description from Apple, I would be really surprised if they approved that kind of VPN apps you’re thinking of. You could definitely use a standard VPN app (that’s made for connecting to a business or education center’s local network) to get around Geo location-based content, but I don’t think we’ll get something like Nord VPN. I hope I’m wrong.

I am thinking this is going to be something more like Private Relay, just designed for Apple TV vs. iCloud/Safari.

If A VPN that allows people to bypass blackouts you will see MLB and others remove their apps from the Apple Tv, as much as I like the Apple TV it will force me to use something else

That would be disappointing. Private Relay has been a terrible experience.

You've been able to do this for years. It wouldn't change anything.

Following this thread for more information, so which provider will you move to? Mullvad?

Yes. It doesn't have the fastest speeds, but the owner is a good dude and it's considered one of the most secure/private VPNs at the moment. You can literally send the company an envelope with cash in it and you'll receive a code so you don't have an online digital fingerprint with transactions.

I personally have not had any issues with Private Relay, may I ask what issues you are having? Just curious, and maybe I am having issues that I am not realizing?

It has sometimes made my connections very slow or sometimes not work at all. It's been very glitchy. I use a VPN anyway so it doesn't really matter. It works occasionally, just not enough for me to use it regularly.

Really Apple has allowed VPNs? MLB and such will see this as Apple itself directly helping bypass blackouts instead of 3rd parties like unblocker,
