HBO (Max barf) gives an error on my Apple TV when I have the router VPN turned on.

You would probably need to load-up a config file for an obfuscated server in order to circumvent/bamboozle these kinds of checks. But the same applies if using a client VPN app on-device.

Wow, interesting. If you don’t mind answering I’d be really interested to understand the following:

1. Why are you doing this? What risks are you mitigating?
2. How do you achieve this technologically across all these devices?

1. Combination of the same reasons anyone else uses a VPN.
2. The devices aren‘t ‘aware’ that they are connected by a VPN.

The further away from your home country you try and connect to, the slower and more unstable the connection will be. Having said that, Nord has been pretty horrible lately even with local connections. They're probably overselling customers and can't meet the bandwidth demand. I often get messages about overloaded servers. I'm going to be switching soon when my subscription is up.

Yes, agreed with that, but for example ExpressVPN has a pretty good connection, even overseas.

Why can’t Apple TV run Safari?

It would start to eat into other device sales.

I wish they’d do it though

With Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support and safari added in, you have all the computer that’s needed for a lot of casual users and older folks, etc.

Would be brilliant

Apple TV doesn't support mouse, also no Office.

Yes, I’m aware of that… Which is why I suggested they add it!
Lol

Office doesn’t matter nearly as much or at all for this application
Plus a ton of folks could do that sort of stuff in Google Docs in Safari anyhow

Never had any issue with it for what I do.

It works most of the time, but it can get frustrating sometimes. Most of my issues have been on the iPhone, though. It always disconnects or has me sign back into my account. It's annoying.

Huh never had that. Only issue I’ve had is when trying to Airplay using it thanks to Apples bug it refuses to fix. So frustrating and can take several reboots and turning things off and on and closing and re-opening apps to get it to work. That’s why I’m so excited for this news at last.

that's an interesting point, although plenty of Android / Google TV boxes do support browsers, and I don't hear people talking about their cheap Google TV PCs. maybe the difference is the Apple TV version would actually be good :)

I do share the desire for an Apple TV browser, although AirPlaying my iPad screen to the TV pretty much solves that, for some reason it doesn't totally scratch the itch for me. I don't know why.

anyway, excited for the VPN support, so far I've had to do it on my TV's built-in Google TV OS or else on my iPad with AirPlay / USB-C HDMI cable. (not always supported though)

I don't understand the worries about Apple somehow limiting or ruining VPN though, how could they do that (in reality?) Isn't VPN support kind of all or nothing? I guess there are different flavors of VPN, they could support a less useful one? But then wouldn't that spoil the "corporate" use case also?

I agree that talking about it in terms of "enterprise" is just the only legally permissible way they could market it, I'd have to think there's an implied wink and nudge there that they just could never say out loud. The fact that it took people a few days to even notice it shows they didn't go out of their way to promote it, surely not wanting to upset the content providers.
The way Apple bypasses VPN connections is that if any app connects prior to the VPN connection it’s does not disconnect and re-connects over VPN this May very well extend to services/app have push notification enabled of fetch in the background without actually opening the app.

AndroidOS establishes the VPN connection then connects. Apple is well aware of this on iOS and even macOS (for its own services) to a limited degree but has not addressed it.

I suspect Apple may do the same for TvOS by having some apps bypass the VPN connection.

Yeah if i dont want anyone to see my personal data would have to get rid of my SS#. Oh you too huh!?
The issue is not simply like entering a bar/night club to prove your age you show your ID at the entrance or anyone serving alcohol and you put it away safely. The issue is if those parties take your ID enter it into a system to later track how many times you have visited the establishment, what alcohol beverages you have consumed, how much you consume, spend, ask for the ID of the people you are with retain that information on their company database for who knows how long and then one day it gets hacked due to a lack of security or some employee decides it’s lucrative info to profit from.

We know the credit rating agencies have had many data breaches both external and internal including many of these companies asking to verify your age and identify and save that info for who knows how long. Those EUA you read mainly serve the company you are dealing with so that means in the start the company may promise that it won’t sell your data but low and behold as time goes by and people get invested into the service some EUA amendments and no slowly your data is being sold and most will not notice or care as their are invested into the service and FOMO in their social circle.

That’s how the game is played. You will be given a choice to accept the new EUA or leave and most people don’t read it or do but feel have no choice. It’s fraudulent as you invested your time and effort without there being an equal opportunity to stick with the contract initially signed. The only two options is accept or leave and those two choice benefit mainly the company not individual. EUA should have a grandfather clause and not just accept anything new thrown at the customer.

Router VPN is the future. Nothing in my house ever gets access to the web without going through a VPN. Nothing. Apple TV included. This is welcome, though, and obviously the only option if your router doesn’t support VPN profiles.
There’s no way you’re getting close to full speeds using a router VPN exclusively

True enough. But then I didn’t make any such claim. Irrespective, a VPN will always reduce speed and increase latency whether you use a client app or a *.ovpn setup on the router. Both can be disabled should the need arise, so your point, while valid, is kinda moot in this context. In my opinion anyways.

Unlocator sucks on a lots of services, for example replays at Fubo, ESPN, etc.

Also unlocator sucks if your public IP changes randomly because you have to go to their website to publish your new IP, I know there's a workaround but is annoying.

Okay...

So what should @dannyyankou use instead?

Speaking for myself, I've not seen any issues using Unlocator - but I don't use fubo or ESPN app so maybe there's issues there and I've just never encountered them.

ExpressVPN, they have a similar service as unlocator and also VPN.

Will this affect ads? I'm curious to see what Adguard can come up with, their DNS filtering works wonders on all my other devices.

That's great news!

I am using ExpressVPN and their MediaStreamer settings in Apple TV is not stable, and would cut off half the time.

It would be amaing to have a native ExpressVPN on Apple TV similar to the ones in iOS and iPadOS.

I wish they’d sort out the layout of films and movies , maybe do a list view or make the tile icons smaller , maybe folders ?

I’ve got 700 iTunes movies now and scrolling through them is a real pain
