AppleTV = still a MASSIVE fail for anyone outside the US. No netflix, no NBA, no MLB not even TV show rentals?!. Its just a VERY expensive iTunes rental machine!

A completely useless playback device currently.

Worked out better to pickup a second hand Mac Mini on ebay for £180 (the ATV is £100). At least with that you can get:

BBC iPlayer
ITV Player
4OD
Sky Player
SeeSaw
iTunes
Flash-Based online video
Boxee
Joost
TVCatchup
etc

Thats pretty great for US subscribers. Now show some love for the UK and add in sky player, 4od and itv player, and you will have me sold!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8F190 Safari/6533.18.5)

When NFL games are available live....I'll buy an apple tv.

There has already been speculation that the NFL this next season will be a part of the Apple TV. If there is a season. It would actually be through Directv which has the rights to the NFL.

Still no Pandora?? That sucks!

At this point the only reason I can think of as to why Apple is not offering Pandora on Apple TV is that it would compete with some cloud-based music service in iOS5....

Ye defo, for UK users its still not worth it. Although with airplay coming to third party apps it may have its uses.

Id love to see sky player on it, but for some reason I don't see sky giving permission :-(

Hey folks -- Gruber is reporting that the NBA is also available on AppleTV...

See http://www.nba.com/appletv/

EDIT: jonnysods beat me to it.... but Gruber's quote is priceless:

"But wait, I’m confused: I read on the Internet that Apple’s new subscription pricing rules were going to keep iOS users from watching cool subscription-based stuff like MLB and NBA games."

Priceless, but lacking context. There's no App Store on Apple TV right now, so App store rules don't apply and getting these things on Apple TV are clearly in Apples best interest. It will be more telling once Apple adds an app store to Apple TV.

Very sad that NHL GameCenter Live didn't make the cut. The PS3 version is garbage and I could use a better alternative.

Such wonderful news! I was so happy when the Apple TV restarted and had the whats new app screen. :D :D

I was going to be happy sending video from my iPad to the TV to watch the At Bat app but this is even better.

I wish the NHL would get their heads out of their collective asses and do stuff like this. You baseball and basketball fans are so lucky. Us hockey fans are basically forced to use cable. The NHL subscription they offer is a joke, and blocks out local games too. It stinks.

100% agreeeeeed.

Edit: bbeagle beat me to the punch.

The NHL has the same stupid blackout rules.

I get the idea about the blackouts, but if I'm paying for the service, how is that any different then me paying for cable (to get the local Sports channel that carries my NHL and MLB teams)??

Not that I agree with their model, but people like me would cancel my cable subscription. I am assuming that some sort of NFL app streaming comes at some point (damn directv), but add that and a pay per view thingy and bye bye cable...

Hopefully in a future jailbreak we could circumvent the blackout rule for MLB.tv. Then we could watch EVERY game no matter what with a subscription....the way it should be.

The worst part about having mlb tv for ipad or iphone is that your team is still blacked out. Theres a reason y im watching on my iphone or ipad and it is because im not home. No one would choose to watch on iphone or ipad when it can watch it on its tv in its living room.

TV networks pay a lot of money to broadcast games, this is why there are blackout rules. they want a monopoly in the local market or huge discount on the fees they pay

$25.00 a month per subscriber isn't enough? Can't imagine the sports leagues/TV networks are getting that much from the cable companies for one channel.

I know this is a silly question - but exactly how do you update Apple TV? I'm in an odd circumstance in that I don't have actual internet access at my home. I live in a rural area where dial up is the only option and I chucked the landline when the first iPhone came out. I do all my surfing on my iPad 3G. I take my laptop to a wifi zone to update it frequently, but am clueless about the process for the Apple TV.

MicroUSB wire and iTunes man

What about some services for users in other countries please such as bbc iplayer or love film, which is the uk equivalent of netflix?

It always seems that US customers get a much better deal. No matter what the product is.
