I'm a Yankee fan living in CT and I don't feel like paying for cable. I'm sure they won't be blacked out, so I'm wondering if it's worth it for me to pay the $ for MLB TV to get the games from my ATV, iPad, and iPhones, or just suck it up (and make the fiance happy) and pay for cable.

I'm not that cheap, but we're trying to trim our expenses a bit, as we just purchased a new home.

You would think that would make sense for them not to blacked out, but think again...

Blackout Map

CT sucks in terms of blackouts for New England teams, trust me, I'm from CT too.

I get the idea about the blackouts, but if I'm paying for the service, how is that any different then me paying for cable (to get the local Sports channel that carries my NHL and MLB teams)??

Because with AppleTV, the local Sports channel, which paid MLB a huge amount of money for exclusive broadcast rights, doesn't get a cut of what you pay to MLB. MLB really ought to renegotiate these contracts to include royalties - so a portion of the money we pay to MLB goes to the local sports channel.

Count me in with the people wanting NHL sub. I guess there is one good thing about living in a state with no NHL Team (Washington). Anyway, I follow the RedWings so I guess the worst they could do is block out the Detroit-Vancouver games.

On that note, how does it deal with blackouts? Is it the credit card address or where the user is. If it's the latter, then maybe a proxy service would help. If it's the former, then I don't know.

It's IP based -- see all the fine print here:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/index.jsp?c_id=mlb&affiliateId=mlbMENUMLBTVPR#blackout
So you are totally right, a proxy would help if you are lucky enough to have access, BUT does anyone know if ATV supports proxy settings?

Also, they have a checker where you can see what teams they would disable for you based on your IP, that's here: http://www.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/blackout.jsp

That policy is asinine. What's retarded is the local sports networks that hold the monopolies, are mostly owned by Comcast and Fox. And these ***holes won't ever make their live feeds available online (especially Comcast cause that would cut into their cable monopoly), so they're basically saying "watch it the old fashioned way or don't watch at all."

Funny. I own an Apple TV, use it every day for hours, and have never given two craps about any of the rental features. I use it strictly for home sharing from my massive video/audio/photo collection and occasionally for AirPlaying content from an iPad or iPhone.

It works flawlessly and beautifully... far from a completely useless playback device. But I guess your needs are different from mine.

Well said. Sure I like to see 1080p which I am sure AT2 can handle and Hulu + but overall I can't say anything bad about the little box  and the price was perfect for what you get. airplay also made everything so much easier to deal with and works flawless. :D

Apple has a winner here even if lots of people don't see it that way. Add some application extensions like weather channel and I would be so happy.

I wouldn't call it a useless playback device either. I actually use it for the following on a regular basis:

** iTunes HD movie rentals
** iTunes current movie previews/trailers
** Netflix viewing
** Radio listening
** HD Podcast viewing (TWiT.tv shows primarily)
** Photo/Video viewing
** iTunes music library listening (over 150GB of music)
** AirPlay of things from our iPhones, including Pandora radio

I probably won't use either the MLB or NBA functions but I like that they are there - indicates good things to come.

Go read my post please...only a tiny portion of it was quoted. I was talking about Apples larger customer base: The rest of the world.

Current features for the ATV in the UK include:

iTunes Movie rentals
AirPlay
Local network playback.

See the issue? The person who quoted me may be happy paying $100 for essentially a network media player (you can pick one of these up for £30 at most electronics shops in the UK and online). If he's happy paying 3x the price for essentially the same, limited device then good for him. But for the rest of us folks across the pond, its still 100% useless...especially since we pay almost twice the price for it, along with rentals.

Sure, if they can get some updates out to include iPlayer, Seesaw, SkyPlayer (Sky gave Humax the all clear to put it on freeview boxes, and its on the Xbox), etc then it'll be great. But currently its not worth the fancy box its packaged in.

How does Apple know where you live to blackout your home games on ATV2?

i dont have apple tv right now, but my gripe comes from mlb tv not allowing me to watch games on my iphone or ipad because im in my market. but they fail to understand that i cant watch the games on my tv cause im not home.

Like others, it's the local-market blackout that gets me. I pay for the iphone app to listen to the radio stream. I get the radio stream with advertising and all. I don't understand why the video stream couldn't work the same way. If I'm paying $100+ to watch NESN (for you Red Sox fans) on another device why would NESN object to that as their advertising would still be intact on the stream.

I want to give them my money.

"HD Quality (where available)"

Yeah...I've read/heard this line for the past 4 years on my cable company's MLB Extra Innings package that I pay $160/season for!!! Guess how many come in HD? About 1 game (out of 10-15) per DAY! 1!

Guess how many Red Sox games I've seen in HD on this system? 0.

MLB and the way they "package" these things sucks. Big time.

The NHL online package tracks your IP address for blacking out home games.

MLB has given Rogers the territorial rights to all of Canada, so all Jays games are blocked online in Canada, which is incredibly stupid given the size of the country.

As to the point "why do they black out locally": many people don't want to pay for cable and would cancel it if they could get the games on their mobile devices/computers. This is just protecting the cable companies advertising profits, and the rights fees MLB teams can exact. That makes sense to me, but the cable companies should offer a streaming add-on for their subscribers. Win-win.

Currently watching the Mets and Astros in HD on the :apple:TV. In all honesty, it looks great. For any baseball fan this is incredible.

I do have a 40mbps connection, probably makes a difference.

iTunes rental HD streaming

But will the update address the issue where I experience a SIGNIFICANT delay before I can start watching an Apple HD Apple TV2 rental.? Netflix works fine, but with Apple HD Movie rentals, I have to either rent, let stream happen, and watch a day later, or rent (download) via iTunes on computer and stream to Apple TV... Totally takes away the spontaneous nature of Apple TV2 rentals..

so... first generation Apple TV is left out right? I guess I should seriously considering upgrading my first gen Apple TV.

NASCAR Raceview would be more interesting/compelling

See, I guess I'm just old, but give me baseball over the radio any day. I just can't get excited about any of the MLB's attempts to modernize the delivery of the sport.. It's a feel, more than anything.. A matter of taste, similar to preferring some books in dead-tree form, and finding others superior in ebook or audiobook form.. Just as I prefer an old Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, or Nick Carter book in dead tree, I prefer baseball over the radio. And, just as I prefer most sci-fi in audiobook form, I prefer my motorsports in 5.1 surround on a 46"+ HDTV and supplemented w/ online content..

If this update included support for a non-flash version of NASCAR Raceview, I'd be tempted to either add an AppleTV or replace my Mac mini w/ an AppleTV for the first time since the first AppleTV was introduced...

Something similar to MLB.tv and NASCAR Raceview but for the WRC would also make the AppleTV more tempting..

For me, the Mac Mini is still the better option for my home theater..

Now if ATV would just allow me to go to Hulu, or one of the other network sites to watch regular TV shows, I would be set. I really could dump the cable and just have ATV which would be SWEET.
However, with Airplay will I be able to do that???

Go SOX!

So long DirectTV - you suck, and the only reason I put up with your nonsense was for the Baseball package. I've still got another 8 months on my contract but then it's ba-bye

+1

does anyone know if you have to watch the games live or can you watch them later once the game is over? Or if you can start a game an hour into it and still watch from the beginning.

The worst part about having mlb tv for ipad or iphone is that your team is still blacked out. Theres a reason y im watching on my iphone or ipad and it is because im not home. No one would choose to watch on iphone or ipad when it can watch it on its tv in its living room.

+1,000,000

Now, all we need to do is find a somewhat *intelligent* person responsible for these things, and explain that to them.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)

Its not worth losing jailbreak for but it's still a addition for some, I would've liked NFL Sunday pass but progress is still good

so do i have to have a separate subscription for each IOS device? i have league pass with DTV, and it works on iPad, but not my iphone. Mlb.tv you can buy for TV, but it doesn't work on other devices.

If you are still forced to buy these IN ADDITION to buying the regular TV subs, it's a no go for me.
