I'm not sure if the "local" areas are the same as they were back then, but if they are it's a pile of crap. In three weeks I saw 0 games I wanted to see. When I got home the Halos were back on a homestand and the Dodgers were in San Diego to play the Padres. I know this was just chance, but I still promptly canceled my subscription when I got back.

Worst luck ever... :D

Anyways, to the point. I live in Nebraska. Blackouts are now limited to just Kansas City. Things have gotten better, I suspect some folks had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. It would be nice to see some creative thinkers flex some muscle and get blackouts totally removed. As I understand it, it has to do with advertising and not competing with yourself... but surely we can find a way around that, can't we? :)

I live in Southern California and am a big Angels fan. I also like the Padres for some reason, and like watching the Dodgers lose. I had the MLB.tv package for 3 weeks a few years ago and during that time I had traveled to Nebraska.

The first 1-2 weeks all three teams were on homestands, and I was locked out due to all three being local. The next week I went to Omaha, Nebraska. The Angels that week were playing the Royals, the Padres the Cardinals, and the Dodgers the Cubs. All three apparently were in the local market for Nebraska, and I was blacked out for these series as well. When the Halos traveled to play the White Sox on my last day in Nebraska, and the Padres and Dodgers swapped series, I still had no access.

Perhaps Apple will have some clout in getting local access for these things. But I won't hold my breath. MLB isn't getting money from me from cable, and they aren't getting my money for MLB.tv either. If they removed the local blackout rules, they'd be getting my money.

This is my issue. I don't have cable and most White Sox games are on Comcast Sportsnet. I can't watch over half of the season. I would pay $120, hell $200-$300, for the ability to stream games. But it's worthless to me because of crappy blackout rules.

And yes, the home markets are still utter ****: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MLB_Blackout_Areas.png

I have a Boxee Box right now. It does a great job with MLB.tv and my local media, but the UI could use some work. Give me 1080p along with the ability to playback my local MKVs (without jailbreaking) and I'll be all over the Apple TV.

Does anyone know if it's possible to hide this mlb/nba ***** Apple just dumped on my ATV?

THIS!

Cmon F1 networks, Bernie, or whomever is in charge of making this decision. How great would it be?? I'd buy it right now.

FOM/FIA dont directly broadcast. They just provide a broadcast to licensed partners (E.G BBC). If you could get iPlayer on this, you could watch it Live on BBC1. Not sure if anyone in the US is aware, but BBC are releasing a premium iPlayer for the iPad which you'll be able to use across the pond. No idea if it does live streams though.

AppleTV = still a MASSIVE fail for anyone outside the US.

Speak for yourself. I'm in Italy, probably one of the worst iTunes store in the world (not apple fault) but i'm enjoying it every weekend!

Hmm...isn't this the same stuff that's been available already on the Roku? Not to mention the ton of other channels they have...Apple TV still doesn't seem even close.

The dangerous thing about being in the Apple bubble is how blind you can get to how many other great things are out there, including products that are flat out better. I'd certainly say this is a case of that happening. Plenty of Apple fans are going to think this is something new.

I am happy for all the MLB fans, but since basically noone in Europe gives a crap about baseball: can we please have an option to remove the menu entry? It's annoying.

TV networks pay a lot of money to broadcast games, this is why there are blackout rules. they want a monopoly in the local market or huge discount on the fees they pay

I'm thrilled about this and just ordered an AppleTV because of MLB.TV. I live 900 miles from my team (Cardinals) so it works well for me. Still, I find the local blackout stupid. If they were over the air broadcasts, maybe I could go along with it, but almost every team is on some Cable channel (e.g, Rockies on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain in my area), I don't think you should have to deal with blackouts.

Some of us like the :apple: ecosystem (the competition not so much) and would much rather have one box from :apple: that does it all. Why does this bother you so much? If your not happy, move along, let us enjoy the :apple: version of MLB.TV.

Safari on Apple TV?

After I update my Apple TV, there's a "What's New" screen (which I cannot get back now) that mentions streaming from Safari as a new feature. What is up with that! I can't seem to make it happen.

OIC, here's the story, from: http://bit.ly/eC0IKj

AirPlay is now more widely available to apps others than Apple's. Using it from within Safari is similar to its functionality with Apple's Videos app. Just launch Safari, find a site that contains video, and look for the AirPlay icon in the video window. Tap the icon and select your Apple TV from the resulting menu. When you start playing the video, it should appear on the TV attached to your Apple TV. :p

This is absolutely awesome. MLB.TV makes the Apple TV worth it to me. Not being able to order the baseball package was my only regret as far as dumping cable. Now, I don't miss it at all.

However, the websites must explicitly enable AirPlay, it is disabled by default. Thus, for the time being you won't find many web-based videos that will work with AirPlay.

i thought only local teams are blackedout. im in cali and can't watch a knicks vs. grizzlies game?

Thanks for the info; I always come to macrumors forums to find out the real deal :D

If you go to MLB.TV they list the Roku.

Maybe Roku has not updated their site.

There's been threads on the Roku forum. It's in testing mode ATM and will come for the regular season (no spring training).

It's worth noting there were lots of complaints last season. Either Roku will have to improve this year or ATV fans may be in for a disappointment. Will be interesting to see...

I wish there was a way to remove the new menu they are useless to me and now I have to scroll down more just to get to stuff. Be nice :p if there was a way to just have what you want and not all this fluff only a select people will use.

Hulu would have been something great not this. :(
