Darn, another update my parents might accidentally install. I won't be home if the Apple TV stops working with our TV again.

This is getting really redundant now...

Music, iTunes Radio, and Beats Music?

I know the difference between them, but it seems to me that a non-tech savvy person would have difficulty knowing the difference.

And add to that computers where you can also listen to your personal music.

My guess on abandoning Apple TV 2 is that it doesn't include the A5 CPU like the Apple TV 3 does.

If ATV software is based on the latest iOS as well, this makes sense: the iPhone 4S is now the oldest acceptable iPhone model, and was also the first with the A5.

Anything older than the A5 simply doesn't receive the major updates today I think.

When loading Beats, it was obvious how much slower the Apple TV processor is compared to the A7. It takes too darn long to do stuff. So I'll likely continue using AirPlay from my iPad because it's so much quicker to navigate to what I want. I guess the good part is I could start a playlist and just let it play.

I'm with ya... been on since 2000 also and have almost 2000 feedbacks, 100%. But I'm getting tired of them and Paypal nickel and diming me to death. I'm starting to sell more and more on Craigslist.

The "Final Value Fee" on shipping was the last straw. I only charge exact shipping costs, but ebay wants to penalize me for not offering free shipping. They want to be like Amazon. Plus, even if you "build-in" the shipping costs, that's a higher sales percentage ebay can get commission of. They don't miss a trick

To top it off, recently whenever I've sold a heavy item, for some reason (sarcasm), their shipping calculator is usually incorrect, resulting in a much lower-than-actual costs. When I've called ebay about it, they try to convince me to just "absorb" the costs or get the buyer to pay more. I've had to just cancel transactions because I can't afford to lose money, and the buyer thinks you're scamming them by asking for more money. Just crazy... But, they have no competition so...

But, to stay on topic, I updated one of my ATVs this evening, took about 25 mins, no issues. Doing the living room ATV now. I like the new look, but have only seen minor changes in going through Settings. I do like the Airplay verification.

I hear ya.. I just got screwed over on two transactions this month, one where I was a seller, and another as a buyer!

You'd think if my history shows I've got a perfect 400 score 100% feeback, they wouldn't make me feel like scum. Especially since I've bought and sold many, many more expensive items than the ones in question. Like I am really trying to get one over on them on a low-value item. Maybe a courtesy refund for a member who filed a claim for the first time and has been with them since the year 2000? Instead I was told they can't do anything for me.

It left a bad taste in my mouth and I won't be using them anymore. I know I'm just one person and they won't miss me, but at this point it feels like I would be disrespecting myself to continue using them.

Yes homesharing not werking anymore here.........
Cannot connect to library......

Working okay for me, on both ATVs that I updated this evening. Perhaps check Settings to verify Home Sharing didn't get turned off?

Check the IP and verify it's on your network. A friend of mine set his up last week and it accidentally connected to his neighbor's WiFi.

Can't say that I like this new look-n-feel. The menus and tabs are too flat!

I agree - it just looks like a slightly amateurish skinned version of the previous software... I can't see how changing a few icon styles and typefaces excludes atv2 either, unless there is some other underlying functionality there.

I find the menus and text in general slightly easier to read without the glowing border and gradient appearance.

I was looking forward to having Beats on my ATV but alas, I have the 2nd generation. :(

No Beats here in Canada, it seems. Licensing nonsense is out of control. Been waiting all year for iTunes Radio, as well.

There is an update for the Apple TV 2 but it doesn't apply any of the visual changes. Sad. There's no reason to alienate the Apple TV 2. This is hardly a big update.

Agree completely. Apple seems to be in danger of creating the fragmented world they've craved to avoid. They have a loyal fan base who pay big money for products but continually seem to be dumped on from a great height. First, 'Handoff' only being available on very recent Macs and now different apps and look on Apple TVs only a few years old.

Be careful, Apple. People's loyalty only goes so far...

Does one have to pay for the beats music ? I mean it IS an Apple product now.

And to me having a music icon just above a beats music icon is kind of redundant.

So change it's position.

----------

Why is Beats music still separate from iTunes not really worth paying extra when you can pretty much get the same stuff off iTunes not sure why Apple has not changed this yet. Whatever, how about Amazon Prime and Movie or TV Show apps that do not need Cable approval there are many of them not sure when will Apple understand why Roku is doing better.

Define "better":

Roku survival requires taking-sales from AppleTV

"There's a paradox facing Roku: More people use its streaming-video equipment than any other product, even as the company far lags behind Apple in overall sales. Research group Parks Associates recently found that 37 percent of households that have a streaming video device use a Roku as their primary gadget, more than the 21 percent using Apple TV or any other rival device. But Apple TV accounts for 56 percent of all sales of streaming video devices, according a recent estimate by Frost & Sullivan, while Roku remains in distant second with 21 percent of the market."

Updated it this morning.

Visually, the icons looks incredibly half-baked and don't look the right distance apart.

Otherwise it's a very similar layout. Not great, tbh.

Here is a much quicker way to install the update onto the ATV 3:

Download one of these depending on which version you have:

ATV 3: http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS8/031-05613.20140917.R9AQa/AppleTV3,1_7.0_12A365b_Restore.ipsw

ATV 3 (New): http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS8/031-05663.20140917.n2Zd6/AppleTV3,2_7.0_12A365b_Restore.ipsw

Plug into your computer with micro usb cable and plug in the power lead.

With option key held down, press restore button in iTunes, select the file you downloaded, restore and when it finishes updating, remove the leads.

All done in 10 min.

It is much faster this way than waiting for the server which can take hours.

They looked ok to me, not great but just ok.

I do really enjoy the new font and navigation bar at the bottom, it's much clearer and cleaner for me to see across the room.

On the plus side, you can now view a list of all the channels and quickly decide to hide/show them.

Not sure if it's new, but it's new to me! :)
