airplay from ios8 to AppleTV

This should not be a surprise, but projecting videos to Apple TV, from an iOS device running iOS8 does not work until the Apple TV's software is updated.

Agree completely. Apple seems to be in danger of creating the fragmented world they've craved to avoid. They have a loyal fan base who pay big money for products but continually seem to be dumped on from a great height. First, 'Handoff' only being available on very recent Macs and now different apps and look on Apple TVs only a few years old.

Be careful, Apple. People's loyalty only goes so far...

And you're surprised by this? Apple has been doing things like this for years...

In the not-so-distant past, they've done it every year with the iPhones. The latest model(s) get all the bells and whistles, the 1-year old iPhones get some, and the older iPhones get less than that... anything else is SOL and no longer supported.

But this is something they've done for their Mac OS. Again, the newer models get more bells and whistles because they have better/more up to date hardware.

The same goes in this case. The ATV2 has an A4 chip... the ATV3 has an A5... the ATV3 has twice the memory... now, does this mean that the ATV2 couldn't handle the icon change probably not, but maybe it has something to do with connecting to a device running iOS8. Maybe Apple decided they would no longer support devices running an A4... Who knows. This is life with Apple products.

Too little, too late

Everything this does (and of course I'm not in the USA) is done better by another device I own. After sending this I'm going to throw it into the "old box" cupboard with my old routers and 100mb switches

I'm still waiting for the update to come down. I waited all night las night, then this morning, I got an error that it had failed.
So, I restarted the ATV and am now sitting at "waiting for update server" again. This is utterly disappointing considering I can't use Airplay until I've updated. :(

Then you should do it the way I said before (assuming you have the ATV3):

Here is a much quicker way to install the update onto the ATV 3:

Download one of these depending on which version you have:

ATV 3: http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS8/031-05613.20140917.R9AQa/AppleTV3,1_7.0_12A365b_Restore.ipsw

ATV 3 (New): http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS8/031-05663.20140917.n2Zd6/AppleTV3,2_7.0_12A365b_Restore.ipsw

Plug into your computer with micro usb cable and plug in the power lead.

With option key held down, press restore button in iTunes, select the file you downloaded, restore and when it finishes updating, remove the leads.

All done in 10 min.

It is much faster this way than waiting for the server which can take hours.

Then you should do it the way I said before (assuming you have the ATV3):

Except, I don't know if I have a "new" or an "old" one. It's not like it comes with labels on it saying which version is which.

Also, I don't think I have a micro USB cable anywhere.

It says on your receipt which one you have.

Alternatively you can use the serial number on the bottom of the device to get info on it at http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com

Micro usb cables are also widely available, so buy one if you don't have one. They are cheap.

Not to worry, finally it downloaded today. It's just in hour 2 of its install now. Got to be the slowest install ever.

So... why are we 2nd generation Apple TV users locked out from the new UI, like the hardware is obsolete or something? We're talking about some restyled static banner images and less glossy animation flair, the boxes are hardly incapable of accommodating this update.

In Settings, if you have an HDMI output option for 1080p, it's an ATV3. If your HDMI options top out at 720p, it's an ATV2.

Overdue refresh but the Apple TV needs far more than a new set of icons and fonts. Here's hoping there's a new Apple TV coming soon.
+1 on that. this update is just a cosmetic change to make ATV UI similar to iOS8 in appearance. even if it stays in its current form and basic functionality ATV really needs a whole new UI with much better search and input options. whenever I need to do any kind of search or enter a password on ATV it feels like torture.

That has got to be the slowest aTV update I have ever experienced. Slow to download (50m), slow to prepare (30m+), slow to install (20-30m). With only a few small changes in the actual interface, I have to believe there is more to this version than meets the eye...maybe something that is laying the foundation for something in the near future.

Then again...probably not. ;)
I had the same experience. it updated eventually but it was so slow that at several points I was wondering if the update process was frozen.

There's more to it than that.

The 2 ipsw files I linked to before were for 2 different versions of the ATV3. You need to know which one you have before deciding which one to download. I didn't bother putting the link to the ipsw file for the ATV2 because that update seems to go fine, so it is probably not necessary to use my method for the ATV2.

The first ATV3 was released in 2012, and the second was released in 2013. They can both output 1080p.

I called the second one ATV3 New but it is also sometimes referred to as ATV3 Rev. A. (i.e., Revision A).

Since updating I am experiencing very frequent drop outs while listening to internet radio through my Apple TV. Anyone else getting this problem? Looks like I may have to miss Radio Paradise untill the next update.. :(

I'm having the same problem. I wish I hadn't updated.

I didn't update my ATV3 and I still am able to stream from my IOS8 iPad and 5s. So not sure an older atv3 wont airplay from ios8.

What does this atv3 update supposed to update?

If I install it will older devices using IOS7 not airplay anymore>

It would be nice to add continuity to the Apple TV where you could easily pick up a movie/tv show you were watching on your Apple TV on your iPhone or iPad. Say if you had to go to the kitchen for something and didn't want to miss or pause the video.

I have a sling box connected to my shaw satellite box ,,so I can watch anything playing on tv ,with my iPad or iPhone using airplay(Apple TV) meaning when I leave the room if watching a movie ,,I can continue watching it on iPad trought airplay(Apple TV ) and also can pause the movie etc.. Can even access dvr satellite box with iPad virtual remote control ,,really amazing ,,
(Sling box 350 and Apple TV ) together ,,works the same way even away from home with cellular service ,,,,using sling box application from app.store ,,,
I recommend it ,,I love it

I find the new interface slightly easier to read , and the scrolling in youtube (ff, skip 30 sec) seems snapier .. and the dreadful typing with remote seems quicker. But, I was hoping for that youtube channels interface to become easier (I follow about 90 channels on Youtube) . I guess , it's not Apples problem...

Good and Bad

Bad -

1. The pink TV Shows icon next to the pink Music icon. Not much for color coding are we Apple?
2. The longest update I have experienced in a long time. I literally fell asleep waiting for this update to complete.

Good-

1. I like some of the look and feel changes, especially with music or movie playback.
2. Beats
3. This update makes me believe a new Apple TV may be imminent next year (as this thing has to be maxed).
