Thanks Apple, the ATV is now a complete mess because of all these mandatory "Channels"

Give it an App Store now, please.

Actually, none of them are "mandatory channels". Just remove the ones you don't want to see anymore and stop crying about them giving you more choices. Besides, my guess is they are trying to build up support for AppleTV from 3rd parties so there is a more justifiable need for an App Store.

More useless channels for those of us who use an AppleTV because we ditched cable/satellite.

Imagine you buy a small electric car for your daily trips but you still need to fuel your big truck otherwise your small electric car won't start. That's what's happening with all these new AppleTV channels.

It's insane, that's the only way to describe it.

Great anolgy. I agree completely. I cut cable a while ago, so all these channel adds are useless to me. Let me know when Apple adds something that does not require cable.

I find my apple TV rather useless.
I use it simply to show films on my mac, to the TV, but i could do that without the Apple TV anyhow.

Mind you, it was a gift as it was Apple TV 3........perhaps a jailbroken 2 Would have been much better :p

I was re-wiring some of my cables and realized I have not turned on my ATV in about 3-4 months. It is now in a box collecting dust.

I have a fairly new TV, and the only apps I used on the ATV (netflix, amazon, and hbo go) are now part of my TV.

comcast supports most of these channels

As does Verizon FiOS. Where I just moved, I got Comcast internet. When my contract is up, I will consider switching to Comcast, but may cut the cord all together and borrow my parents info, since they don't use it.

You cannot remove the channels and downloads are mandatory. All you can do is hide the channels from the interface.

The AppleTV should just pop a window and tell us "Channel XYZ is available, do you want to install it?". I don't know how much space the average channel takes, but I'm guessing people will start running out of storage on second-generation AppleTV's sooner or later.

I for one am getting sick of waiting for Apple to treat the ATV as something other than a hobby. This is one product area where other companies are truly leaving them behind. I've been waiting patiently for a long time for Apple to add an app store so that I can install Plex and watch my own library of local content, but so far nothing.

I'm giving them until the end of the year and then I'm buying a Roku.

Thank you for sharing your guess. I would be devastated if I ran out of space on my AppleTV.

bring Sky Go to the apple tv already -.-

seriously who needs all those useless apps that require cable. if u have cable u can just use ur cable dvr??? or let me sign up for those apps for a low fee like hulu or whatnot. backwards cable companies

It's just an icon. The content is pulled from the provider once you access the channel. You could have thousands of channels and it wouldn't make much of a difference as far as space is concerned.

My only question on the FOX NOW channel is the following: can you stream live content or is it only on-demand style?

I pay for Hulu Plus which has pretty much every Fox show anyways. Same with ABC. So these channels are redundant unless they offer live streams or immediate availability (ala HBO GO) when a new show airs.

As a side note, I'm not sure what people don't get about the advantages of having an Apple TV along with a cable sub. Currently I have the most basic of cable packages (which also gives me HBO). However the interface of the cable box is terrible. So I simply log into the various Apple TV channels and have the ability to watch what I want and when I want it.

Also, you can use the Apple TV in other rooms instead of getting a second cable box which always carries an additional fee.

I cut the cord for over a year until I got an offer from Comcast that was the same internet I had (105mbps) plus basic cable and HBO for $7 more per month then just internet alone. Couldn't say no to that...but that doesn't mean I have to use their equipment. That's where the Apple TV comes in.

I pay Comcast over $100 a month for a business grade Internet connection that is faster than some entire countries have.

Yet I can't access this content because it wants me to authenticate through a TV provider.

Why the hell can't they uncouple Apple TV content from requiring a TV provider? Pretty much all these channels have ads anyway, so people are still gettting paid. WTF is the deal?

Even FREE TO AIR networks like ABC are asking for TV provider info.

MY TV PROVIDER IS AN ANTENNA IN THE ATTIC DAMN IT.

Grrr.

Just Add PLEX for international Users .. my Apple tv 2 is wasted I am using chrome cast ..

Can't get CNBC channel to register.

Tried a few times but CNBC registration will not work. Comcast Xfinity. FoxNow worked fine.

I agree with you 100%. I simply do not understand why so many people are so confused about this. My only guess is everyone things the money they pay to the CABLE Company is ONLY for TV Content and that the Internet is FREE. Crazy....

Come'on Apple..this is Lame!

I'd like to see Apple throw a couple billion dollars at this problem. I'm sure they could make this much better...they'd just need to throw money at the content providers to get them to relax their idiotic "cable subscription required" rules.

These things are on my wish list for Apple TV. Full knowing that some are wishful thinking and in random order:

  • Netflix type subscription model for iTunes movies
  • Access to global TV programming
  • App store with applications and games and a dedicated controller
  • A redesign of the user interface
  • An iTunes match type of detection system that detects which DVD's I have and makes those titles available for free through the iTunes store
  • I like Roku's headphone jack in the remote
  • Ability to attach a USB drive with personal files

Where is Free Ad-Supported Internet Television?

Why is there no free ad-supported internet television yet? Sure there is Hulu but you have to pay for it (on AppleTV) and STILL watch ads. I'm not doing that. I'm interested in either free television with Ads or pay television without ads. I'm sure Apple could make this happen if they just throw some bucks at the content providers.

Apple, please take note:

I am tired of these worthless updates. I bought an Apple TV because I don't want to subscribe to cable television, nor will I ever subscribe to cable television. If all you do is add content that requires a cable subscription to watch, then why even have an Apple TV in the first place?

Apple's products are almost always useful and meaningful, but the Apple TV is a joke. Please get out of bed with the stupid cable companies and give us an Apple TV that will completely change the way we watch television. Apple has always innovated their own path, please do the same with the Apple TV.

Small steps..

One day, content providers will be confident enough to stream directly to consumers. That day can't come soon enough.. Let's just hope cable companies don't throw a fit and throttle everything and everyone, with the classic "our network can't handle it" excuse..

Yeah I agree with this... it's like the DRM on music files... after a while when the industry has gotten used to the shift they'll remove the stupid "training wheels" and progress the technology further.

But for right now this is pretty much useless to anyone who has cut the cord.

the largest growth in streaming content is where you need a cable login

Yeah great news...

Apart from the fact I live in Europe and my Apple TV only has one channel that works, Netflix.

But wait ... Isn't all of Apple's overseas billions tied up in an Irish company? Shouldn't there be some sort of awareness of Europe, which has more people than the US?

That's an expensive workaround, not a solution.

Get a £10 Now TV box that comes with iPlayer, ITV Player and 4oD as native apps.

Doh! Something that would do exactly what is required is not a solution. What a strange world we live in.
