This display is really underwhelming as it's basically an old edge-lit IPS display with poor black levels and still 60Hz. I'd be willing to pay 3k for a 32“ Mini-LED/OLED with 120Hz. Face ID would be neat. I don't need 1000 nits sustained full screen brightness and super accurate colors which makes the Pro Display XDR so expensive but some up to date display tech and >27“ would have been nice. Couldn't care less about the speakers but for sure people will be happy about them.

Incredibly underwhelming monitor. Another repackaged LG 5K with a good webcam and the same trash 1,000 contrast ratio. I would've paid $2-3K for a monitor in between this and the XDR.

Yeah once you've seen the MacBook Pro display, you can't really go back to mediocre black levels and 60 Hz. It could be a combination of supply issues and expense that makes offering a mini-LED desktop monitor unfeasible for less than $5K right now.

How come its missing the ugly holes in the back? I thought that was necessary to keep it cool from heating?

At sub-4K resolution (3440x1440) with no webcam (much less a 12MP one) and no speakers and optimized for video games, not professional production work.

Mind you, I have the Alienware on order, but it's going to be my gaming monitor on my Alienware gaming PC.

I will still use my iMac 5K for my work.

how is a display optimized for videogaming? I know its optimized for creative work with correct colour reproduction and such but whats videogame optimization?

You may yet be able to since we have reports of Apple and LG working on 32", 27" and 24" displays.

Apple today unveiled the 27-inch 5K "Studio Display" external monitor, alongside the new, high-end Mac Studio desktop computer.

apple-studio-display-1.jpg

The Studio Display features an all-screen design with narrow borders in a slim, all-aluminium enclosure like the 24-inch iMac. The display can be tiled up to 30 degrees thanks to its built-in stand.

To customize the display, customers can choose a more versatile, height-adjustable stand with a counterbalancing arm for an additional $400, or opt for a VESA mount adapter option, and there is also the option of nano-texture glass for an additional $300.

The screen itself features a 5K retina resolution with over 14.7M pixels. It also has an anti-reflective coating, up to 600 nits of brightness, P3 wide color, support for over one billion colors, and True Tone.

The Studio Display also contains the A13 Bionic chip to support its camera and audio system. It features a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera like the iPad, with Center Stage for the first time on the Mac.

With a high-fidelity six-speaker setup, the display contains four force-cancelling woofers that minimize distortion and two high-performance tweeters, featuring support for Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. The Studio Display also includes a studio-quality three-mic array that is optimized for calls and voice recordings.

The rear of the Studio Display features three USB-C ports and a Thunderbolt port to connect peripherals. The display can deliver 96W of power to a notebook, and can fast charge the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Up to three Studio Displays can connect to a single MacBook Pro.

The Studio Display starts at $1,599. Alongside the Mac Studio, the Studio Display is available to order today and orders will begin to arrive on March 18.

I have been waiting for delivery of the LG 5K 27” Ultrafine monitor. Just canceled the order and ordered the Apple Visual Studio which looks much better. Probably made by LG given the specifcation.

The Pro Display XDR has active cooling because the LED backlights are hot to provide the peak and sustained brightness levels.

High-refresh rates and low input-lag. Also curved panels for larger sizes (like 34").

The AW3423DW supports up to 175Hz (at 8-bit color) with nVidia G-SYNC, has a curved display (though a subtle one, which I like) and offers low input lag.

I think the monitor market will look very different a year (2?) from now or so.. they can't keep charging top dollars for 5-10 year old technique. (low light edge led ips panels) Samsungs new will shift the whole monitor market hopefully in starting to produce better quality/value propositions.. Its been stale for years now. You should be getting a lot more bang for your buck in the high 1000$ or even less market, Oled tvs is going to disrupt this further as well.. Mini Led/FALD monitors is just too costly to produce in those smaller sizes and not very cost-effective for the manufacturers it seems..

Heck I even bet that Samsungs smart monitor for 200 bucks with VA panels is better for like 90% of the time/what you see, than this new Apple monitor for MOST consumers.

Apple announcement today feels a bit off in regards to that.. should have been released a couple of years ago at the minimum.

I'm not underwhelmed -- especially since I have a LG UltraFine 5K (v2) that I honestly haven't loved -- is it the best monitor out there? No, it would be great if we had OLED/mini-LED, but I'm not mad at this at all.

I actually ordered it to replace the LG (that I'll be selling to someone locally for a good price for both of us) and as others have said, if you do order this, I'd recommend getting the VESA option if this is something you want to adjust/rotate.

Not only will you have far more flexibility, the types of stands and arms you can get from Ergotron are realistically going to be just as good/if not better (I'll bet money the HX at $329.99 is going to be better quality than anything you get for $400 from Apple) than the stock stuff. Obviously, aesthetics are subjective, and the silhouette Apple offers out of the box is beautiful, but I actually prefer having all of my various monitors on arms that are of the same color/manufacturer.

I didn't hate the LG display but this is one that I think I'm going to like much more. Is it the best monitor? No. Is it going to be very good in its class? Yes, I think it will.

does this mean you can't use it on a non-mac OS because is missing the buttons?
It's not officially supported. However, the LG UltraFine 5K can work with a Windows PC, though you need to install third party software to adjust the brightness, etc.

Only 1 TB port is kind of a bummer since that means you'll have to use a dock or 2 TB cables to your Macbook for a dual Studio Display setup.
Thunderbolt allows you to daisy chain so it will only use one port.

It has no full array local dimming, only 600 nits peak brightness and no 120hz?

For the same price you can soon purchase a 42 inch LG C2 OLED…
Not that I think the new Apple display is a particularly good value, but are there really that many people cross-shopping 42" monitors and 27" ones? That's the difference between my iMac and my TV, and my iMac is already on the large side of comfortable for my desk space and visual field. You'd have to have a really deep desk to keep it at a similar visual PPI.
