Abysmal screen with no HDR support, non-laminated, no wide color gamut. That's a major downside. They could AT LEAST laminate the display, give it 90hz, and give it HDR 500 support, but they throw the same old (and I do mean old) screen at this thing. Frustrating!
OK that is a good point. An iPad needs a good screen.

Apple are probably wary of putting their AI in the hands of kids. The base iPad sells well to education, children and teens. Maybe they wanted to avoid any ‘AI rewrite’ controversy on homework and so forth?
Don’t forget businesses, they use it for a few things and that’s it. We only buy base model iPads of the current gen with cell data plans. Zero difference in our use case for an A series vs M series.

❓ Some questions for the expert sleuths out there:

  1. How is the physical size/style/proportion between the two models?
  2. Will my same case work with the new 11th generation aka A16 model?
  3. Why are they calling it A16 and not 11th generation?

Apple today announced the 11th-generation iPad, now featuring the A16 Bionic chip and more storage.

The announcement came alongside the debut of the new iPad Air, which now features the M3 chip. From Apple's press release:

The new iPad starts with 128GB of storage, and is also available in 256GB and a new 512GB configuration. The previous model was only available in 64GB and 256GB configurations.

It is available in blue, pink, yellow, and silver, and continues to start at $349. Customers can pre-order the new iPad starting today, with launch scheduled for March 12.

The demographics for ipad is not all age groups for just media consumption. It's a kids device focusing on schoolwork mostly. Lack of all these functions are not vital.

If you want a media consumption device get a refurb ipad pro would be better.
Maybe for some but in our area, it's Chromebooks that kids get from school systems. My son is a sophomore and they've had Chromebooks since he was in elementary school. The people I know that have iPads use them for web browsing and watching videos/movies, hence my comments.

It wouldn't take much for Apple to turn this into a great tablet for watching movies.

I'm really considering "downgrading" from ipad air 3 to ipad 11, and even though I was expecting at least A17, I'm quite happy that they kept the price. I've written this once, but the display is not so bad compared to ipad 9. It is still not laminated, but the gap is much less than before. I prefer the keyboard folio more than the air version.
I have found that adding a matte screen protector to my 10th gen has effectively masked the air gap. I think it is the nature of the matte texture.

For me, that’s actually good news, as there’s nothing I wanted in the iPad 11, so I can buy the iPad 10 at a lower price than before the new iPad was unveiled.

No one notices the improvements on iPad I have the m1 iPad Pro and I’ve used the m4 and it’s identical, no apps people use on the cheaper entry level iPad that needs that power, they could of at least done some display changes
Affinity Suite, Logic for iPad are but two that can leverage that power.

There should be some really good deals on ninth generation and 10th generation sub $200 😛

Maybe this will change, but the pricing at retailers for iPad 10 here in Canada is currently only 12% off retail, meaning it's pointless to buy the iPad 10 here. The iPad 11 is a much better deal here if you value ongoing iPadOS and security updates, considering the iPad 10 came out way back in 2022.

It would be strange to buy an entry level iPad for those applications.

iPad 11th
A16 (2022 SoC) without Apple Intelligence
128GB to 256 GB for 100 $ more
256GB to 512 GB for 200 $ more (800 $ per TB!)
TRY AGAIN TIM!

They need to add the headphone jack back if they want to keep education customers. We are not going to hand dongles to five year olds, and asking for Bluetooth headphones to be provided by parents is not going to happen. Nor are we going to provide them. Just becomes a logistical nightmare. We will transition to touch screen Chromebooks if we have to with iPads only for Special Education instances that a Chromebook can not fulfill. AI is less of a concern at this point, especially with the students that would be getting these devices.

theres plenty of people who dont have $1000 for a pro ipad but still want to be creative. There should be a device for each demographic
Yes, and an iPad Air will suit them. Or they can use a base iPad just with the knowledge that it won't be as powerful. Just because someone with a lower budget wants to use a complex program doesn't mean Apple should spec the most powerful chips in the cheapest products.

Note however, the iPad 11 is much more powerful than my prior iPad Pro 10.5", and I was able to use LumaFusion on that.

Most of the people complaining aren’t in the market for the base iPad regardless of specs. If Apple gave it more powerful specs and increased the price they would be still complaining. The average person who buys these base iPads don’t care about this stuff. Most of those customers probably buy them from 3rd party retailers during a sale
In 2025 there are still people who take it as a personal insult when Apple produces a product that they themselves wouldn't buy. It's just a fact of life.

I don't let that bother me though. I'm thoroughly enjoying the Apple devices I currently own.

Agreed!

Equally bad are the folks who talk down at and try to silence people who wish Apple would keep supporting their needs

(those of us who prefer smaller iPhones, for example, end up taking a ton of this brow beating)

This upgrade was as expected, except the lack of an Apple Intelligence capable processor. Apple seems to be focusing on AI, so I don’t understand this move....except to upsell. Nevertheless, the $350 base price is great.

I use Apple Intelligence frequently to shorten my texts and emails. I tend to ramble. 😃

Good to see an increase in base storage. Very much needed. Happy to see the bright colours retained with the update.

Kinda bummed the iPad 11 doesn't have the A17 Pro, like iPad mini, but I still might go for this. Should give me a couple of years of good use until the iPad Air gets OLED screen.
