Funny, I didn't say I was against downsizing the mac pro or advancing the function of the design. But when it come's to basic aesthetics of the object, it just does not look good. Sorry but I am allowed to express what I think, and I am just calling it as I see it. It reminds me of a black plastic wastepaper can, or an ashtray... this is also design, this is also communication. This is what I see, plain and simple. I would not like to have this on my desk or even underneath it. Apple has been mastering the art of industrial design creating products that look and feel good, this looks like a toy from star wars. Terrible. I bet you love the new Airport as well, haha.
I don't use Airport and never have for the last 10 years. I use 3rd party router. I could'nt care less if it looks like an ashtray can, but you should KNOW that they have a reason for that industrial design for the Mac Pro.
So you're saying "it does not look good" in a subjective manner, but how would you define 'good' design? Can you think of any?
This is why YOU. ARE. NOT. A. DESIGNER.
Designers understand definition and depth. People who lack that skill only think "IT just looks cool. You know..like in one of those sci-fi movies". Design is about thinking things in a new way by solving certain problems. That's a "JJ Abrams" way of thinking of how cool it should look. Stanley Kubrick, on the other hand, is the maestro and has made his films with creative purpose, as an example.
Ive must have had a reason for making the Mac Pro rounded, along with his staff. He's the head hardware designer and is responsible for that, although Mr. Mansfield most likely had something to do this architecture as well. Ask yourself this: did YOU REALLY think that all 'pro' tower computers would stay TALL and BOXY for the next 20-100 years? Hardware is going to evolve over time.
Is it flawed? We don't know until we SEE it in person and try it out. It's not even out yet, so I'm sure it won't be as loud as the older Mac Pros, and I'm sure the design to vent heat and keep the machine cool is probably well thought out compared to the iMac's (I've had problems with the summer heat causing the iMac to go even warmer whereas in Winter, it stays cool all day).
It's the little things that make or break a design. But still, like others have said, it's really the G4 Cube design reincarnated inside a cylinder. It really is. And having the top part be the fan makes a lot of sense.
It's no question that with the new specs, it's truly a monster compared to the iMacs. The old Mac Pro was too big to carry around and I have the older G4 tower stored away. It was clunky and heavy.
What Apple did in condensing the size down was the right thing to do. It's about compact design, not turning it into a Mack truck like Optimus Prime.
