Such a joke. iPad OS us still terrible for the power of the hardware.
I wanted to watch some movies off a USB-Drive on a flight using my iPad. Couldn't do it directly, first I had to transfer all of the files into the VLC App folder on the iPad, they couldn't be read off the USB drive. Using Files is horrible, just such a subpar experience compared to macOS.
Apple if you are going to give iPad Mac level hardware, please make the OS capable of doing more complex user flowers.

i hear you, didnt buy this ipad for ios 18 but it would be nice if they offered more common sense features for a device that almost wants to be a laptop

Apple doesn't want the iPad to become a laptop like a Mac.

Apple already provides a traditional laptop in the MacBook. No reason to emulate that experience with an iPad. iPads should be different enough from both Macs and iPhones.

LOL what a joke... brand new $1200 M4 iPad Pro for a calculator app... I swear I dont understand Apple's business strategy here.

The business strategy isn't to create a touch-oriented MacBook or a 2-in-1 device.
Apple's strategy is to sell a lot of iPhones, iPads and Macs with high profit margins.

I don’t know what the M4 has to do with Stage Manager. I think things like math notes are a much better representation of “using the full power of the chip”.
Yeah, no clue how better computational power could correlate to a more powerful multitasking solution. Just a completely baffling notion!

Here's the thing – wouldn't it be fun to use that Sequoia-Continuity-Screenthingamadub with the iPhone, only with iPad and Mac. Even if the Mac is not nearby, but online, running at home, while you're somewhere else with the iPad. It's not the same as running it locally (Speed, screen resolution, the whole Jumpdesktop thing)... but if it worked seamlessly, it would be someeeeething at least. Just let me tap into my Mac from afar without hassle (also, please: from Mac to Mac, just as we were able to do 20 years ago ;-))
Check out tailscale, I remote into my mac from my ipad constantly and it's fine (using jump, but not their weird agent/cloud offering just normal vnc)

Reminds me of that Steve Jobs quote where he was talking about when apple had lost its way in the early nineties:

What happened at Apple, to be honest, over the years was the goal used to be to make the best computers in the world. And that was goal one. Goal two, we got from Hewlett-Packard actually which was "we have to make a profit". Because if we don't make a profit we can't do goal one. So, yeah, I mean we enjoyed making a profit, but the purpose of making a profit was so we can make the best computers in the world. Along the way somewhere those two got reversed. The goal is to make a lot of money and well, if we have to make some good computers well ok we'll do that... 'cause we can make a lot of money doing that. And, it's very subtle. It's very subtle at first, but it turns out it's everything. That one little subtle flip... takes 5 years to see it, but that one little subtle flip in 5 years means everything.

This is the best article I've come across on the iPad's limitations: https://www.macstories.net/stories/not-an-ipad-pro-review/

It's a thorough and thoughtful piece from someone who has used the iPad heavily for 12 years. Sadly, I don't think Apple's latest iPadOS fixes a single one of the problems listed here. For anyone considering upgrading their iPad, stick to an M1. I even sold my 12.9" recently and am sticking with the 11" 2020 iPad Pro I've used the most and which does 99% of what the M4 can software-wise.

What's ironic is that Microsoft's excellent Remote Desktop Client app for iPad allows you to do exactly that... with a Windows desktop.

Apple both charges for their own Mac to Mac remote desktop solution and doesn't have an iPad client. There are other apps like DuetDisplay that can do it but there is a subscription cost. There are ways to install a VNC to RDP bridge on the Mac so that you can use Microsoft's app (and there are a number of third party VNC apps) but neither solution is as elegant or cost-free as Microsoft's RD Client or a potential Apple remote client solution.

I’m just here for the meltdowns of those that were expecting something revolutionary to justify their M4 purchase.

Awesome article That says nearly all. Federico, who clearly is the only one using his iPad, misses multiuser accounts. At a workplace, the ability to easily deploy a bunch of iPads to a regularly changing workforce (say daily) would be a godsend.

Buy the new and improved m4 ipad. It’s the most powerful ipad ever and it will let you change the background color or your icons!!!! Get it now, only $2000 plus taxes (which we can now calculate with the new calculator app).

The cynicism in these discussions is just exhausting. The OS updates look more significant to me than they have in years. Every last feature is not in the keynote.

Disappointing iPad OS update, but that’s par for the course. They really need to overhaul that software dev team or resource it properly.

I don’t think Mac OS needs to be on the iPad, but if they are just going to ignore all the headaches this OS causes when it comes to actually trying to multi task, it would be a better solution than rolling out an update where the calculator app is the marquee feature.

The iPad hardware is some of Apple’s best, but the OS really holds it back. Still enjoy using the iPad, but beyond personal “fun” use, it’s hard to make a solid case for it over something like a Surface Pro.

The real irony is that everyone has already downloaded / paid for a calculator app that will be better in terms of general functionality than the one built into the iPad by default because we all got sick of waiting over 10 years.

Heck even Soulver beat Apple to the iPad and their new iPhone version is really functional for more complex stuff.

I wasn’t expecting miracles with this update, but I really was hoping for at least some improvements in Stage Manager, including window management. I was also hoping for Files improvement, but not even a mention of that. Maybe there will be some significant tweaks we just never heard about….

I don't get why people keep complaining about iPads not being used to their full potential power, just buy a MBP if you really need it for full performance and productivity. Like if Xcode was on iPad, who would actually use it.

It’s not all about developer tools, etc. it’s the fact that if you start a file transfer and try to use another app the transfer stops or even crashes. Additionally, trying to transfer multiple files gives you no status/progress bar. I don’t care about your workflow, that’s the most basic of things that these tablets can’t do and should be unacceptable regardless of the exorbitant prices they can reach.
