I was holding off upgrading in the faint hope they'd possibly introduce multi-user accounts like MacOS now that these iPad Pros + MKB cost more than a MacBook... nope, so FY Apple!
Pretty sure iPP + MK has always costed more than a MacBook since the MK came out 4 years ago, maybe even before that with the Smart Keyboard/Folio.

For as good as some of these updates are, the iPad specific ones are really lackluster. iPad is really turning into the bastard child at Apple. No wonder sales have been mediocre. All of this power for no good reason. I love upgrading my hardware but when it comes to iPad I’m like “Why bother?” Only thing that is kinda tempting was OLED but even then I haven’t felt a need to upgrade my M1 iPad Pro 12.9” with mini LED and 16GB RAM. It’s already overkill!

I don’t expect to use my iPad exactly how I use my MacBook. I even use my iPad Pro more than my laptop so I have no complaints. You should never buy anything tech with expectations of features not promised at time of purchase
Same for me, I got my m4 iPP for what I could do with it. I use iPad more than MacBook and 15 PM and have a workflow with each. Was really not expecting much out of ipadOS 18. I wanted the new Magic Keyboard and function keys, aluminum palm rest, new pencil features. its a lot faster and I love the OLED screen (another reason I wanted it and it is great with dark scenes on my shows ) So I am happy. We bought with the same expectations.

Only thing at this stage that makes sense is that Jobs had probably a list of a handful of things that the future leaders of Apple should never do to his company, that Cook and everyone else who follows are obligated to follow those wishes.

One of those is likely "Make any product more functional and desirable for computing than the MacIntosh" is one of them, with the argument likely made by him that Mac is and always has been the core of his company and nothing should ever upstage it, computing wise.

An iPad with software that Apple developers would have no restrictions with, would easily usurp the Mac in popularity.

So still no Journal in iPad? Really? Craig? Really? Lmao.
This is really so disappointing. The journal app would be a perfect showcase and demo app for developers. Make it open source and show how you can do something like it across iOS, macOS and iPadOS. But it seems Apple themselves are not able to pull this off.

It’s not all about developer tools, etc. it’s the fact that if you start a file transfer and try to use another app the transfer stops or even crashes. Additionally, trying to transfer multiple files gives you no status/progress bar. I don’t care about your workflow, that’s the most basic of things that these tablets can’t do and should be unacceptable regardless of the exorbitant prices they can reach.
It’s the word ‘pro’ that should surely denote a professional device. With professional features.

No major changes other that the Calculator. Glad to see that it is finally available. Looks like it will be a good one.

Golden rule: Always buy products (whatever they are) with the features they offer when you buy them, not what they might offer someday.
For a business that wants to make money there is so little benefit upgrading to a new iPad. So far the new features go back to the 1st gen 11“ iPad Pro. There‘s so little gain between what the 1st gen iPad 11“ and the new M4 versions.

this is crazy, same BS, i just got my m4 ipad, what a disappointment
Apple down to a T !!

People have to understand, if Apple gives iPad users the same fundamentals as the higher tier hardware, then they will suffer and lose them $$

Apple will keep adding pointless upgraded hardware into the iPad, but why when it will never be used to it's full potential?

Hello Calculator, bye-bye Calc+ (but seriously, I uninstalled it after this notification.....)

I was at the local Apple Store, pre event. The new iPad Pro is ok, good, but honestly the difference for day to day usage marginal from my current iPad Pro 2019. Yes it is thinner and the real winner is the new Magic Keyboard combo, there they got that right. That said, I found myself saying, it’s almost a laptop, then……but, but, its still running iPad OS

After a big splash (and a crushing impact of the new M4), the iPad seemed to be treated as an afterthought at this year’s WWDC. There is nothing I cannot do with my present device, so why upgrade? Ok, my device is the last to support iPad OS 18, but if 18 is any indication, skipping 19 may not be a big loss.

We should simply accept that Apple is too diversified and the refresh cycles are too compressed to provide us with ground-breaking updates every year. The limited feature updates lag far behind what is now just frothy marketing pitches by Apple « talking heads ».

For me the keyboard with function keys and the aluminum palmrest (my old Magic Keyboard plastic is broken and peeling) along with the speed and especially the dual OLED really drew me (love the contrasts and black blacks making watching shows with dark scenes is a real pleasure again). I swapped my M2 iPP from last year to get it. I use my iPP for probably 60 percent of what I would call soft computing (not needing high level professional apps found on MacOS) and media consumption. And yeah the weight is wonderful compared to the M2 iPP I swapped (at Best Buy where i tried the M4 first and was sold.

After the fact for me the M4 may be rated at 1.6 times speed of my M2 /or M2’s. But dang it seems a lot faster in many things and opening apps ect. Loving the speed as well. So for how i use iPad it is a major improvement without the features so many are lamenting not here for them.

Yeah it is but some individual features intrigued me enough I put the beta 1 on my new M4 iPP. It is actually one of the best beta I have experienced in years of joining in testing. I am glad I joined because several of the features (lots of the AI stuff is coming in later betas) were there I wanted and i can use them now while testing as well. Finding no probables with my apple and third party apps as well.

Oh yeah yesterday the so called “Apple Reality Distortion Field” was strong in their “frothy marketing pitches” LOL

A dystopic update to iPadOS. The worst one could have expected. My iPad Pro M1 remains a brick. A beautiful brick, btw

That’s too bad my update was fast and easy with no difficulties but I am using a M4 2TB iPadPro 13 inch have not heard of other M1’s or M2 iPads having this problem but who knows. Yours is first hope you get it solved.

It's possible that Apple only just started paying attention to the overall "iPadOS is holding back these iPads" sentiment as of the reviews for both the M2 iPad Airs and M4 iPad Pros.

I know that folks (both in and out of the tech press) have been saying that since the M1 iPad Pros of 2021 came about, but with an 18 month gap between releases, Apple may have stopped paying attention to this particular sentiment of iPadOS. Considering iPadOS is not as high on Apple's priority list as iOS and macOS anyway, this wouldn't be surprising.

Continuing with this train of thought: perhaps, the overhaul to iPadOS IS coming, though work on it may have only started recently.

Between last month's iPad Air and Pro announcements and yesterday's iPadOS 18 announcements, the message Apple is otherwise telling us is that "All the amazing things you can do with iPad" is almost entirely dependent on apps and not anything that the OS is going to do. I'm not saying that isn't a viable personal computing design strategy. But, even in that context, there is PLENTY OF ROOM for overhaul and improvement.

An iPhone (even as high end as an iPhone 15 Pro Max) or an iPad mini are fine to be what they are with iOS and iPadOS being what they are. It gets weird the more you give the standard and larger sized iPads computer-like features and elements (e.g. professional drawing tools and keyboard/trackpad attachments).

It's almost like putting a baby into a suit and tie and pretending that they're ready to replace the company's COO.

It took 14 years… but it’s pretty awesome and is able to take advantage of the Apple Pencil with the equation drawing feature

Ok this is really cool (the math notes portion).

Definitely great feature.

Just pray no nefarious app gets access to your handwritting .. I can foresee lots of 'official' banking funds lost due to mimicking one's personal signature along with access to banking. A thought of a cup a lot less than half-full lol. If its gonna happen it'll be in the EU with sideloading gone awry. Then, maybe THEN the EU will think twice into meddling with corporations innovations and willingness to keep security withn walled gardens.
