You can use any keyboard and any trackpad.

  • Yes, but you can’t buy any keyboard that uses the smart connector, which is probably proprietary.
  • And, you can’t buy any pencil that has the proprietary Apple chip to reduce latency and other smart features on the iPad screen.
  • And, my guess is that Apple will develop some proprietary features only available on their iPad trackpad.

Like I said, well before there was an ASK or an Apple Pencil, there were BT keyboards and stylus that worked with iPad. Apple held some proprietary features for their accessories alone, so they could up sell their iPad customers. I suspect the same will happen with the iPad Trackpad, and we will see it in the Fall with the public release of iPadOS.

There is mouse support btw,

Wait, so there is support for bluetooth mice? I keep reading that it's only for wired mice, but clearly that video shows BT working. Very nice.
[doublepost=1559699677][/doublepost]"Additionally, the developer also mentioned that mouse support works on an iPhone and iPod touch too."

Yes it's mainly for fun and probably not something anyone would ever use, but something us geeks would no doubt appreciate. This brings me back to my longstanding belief that PC's (as in windows, Mac, etc) will eventually just be smartphones wirelessly connected to universally available workstations comprised of a monitor (or VR), keyboard and mouse (or VR controls). After all you can display your iphone on an Apple TV, so in that case the mouse might actually be useful.

You mean iPad Pro 2019, technically for the 12.9” model this would be Gen 4 (2019), Gen 2 for 11” (2019) models.

I am sure with next years iPadOS we will see mouse support outside of the assistive section and multi-user login. If the home screen is a copy of what was available on Android years ago, it is only time.

I'm buying my first Apple product for 9 years when they do. Sure it will happen, TVOS update gives us the hope that it will in the not too distant future hopefully!

Hope my Original 9.7" iPad Pro (the first iteration) qualifies for this..but i'm doubtful.
You don’t need to hope. Apple always specifies which devices can run a new version of software. It’s right there on Apple website. Do your research.

Apple creating the modern day version of Android HoneyComb (androids extinct tablet OS) still with less capabilities........smh

Is the USB capabilities for USB C ipads only? Or does this extend to lightning with a dongle?

I think it extends to lightning ports as well. The iOS 13 list of new features for iPhone includes connection to external drives, and iPhones only use lightning ports. So, I see no reason why iPads with lightning ports would not also connect.

BTW - you don’t necessarily need a dongle. Amazon sells lightning connector thumb drives.

I'm sure you need a dongle. You need to connect the drive via USB to the Windows machine and then via dongle to the Lightning port of the iPad. How else would you transfer files from a Windows PC to an iPad? Or are there already Thump drives that have both USB and Lightning ports?

There are, and they have been around a while, but I have never actually gotten one because they have no software support except maybe a single app.

SanDisk 32GB iXpand Flash Drive for iPhone and iPad - SDIX30C-032G-GN6NN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CIEBU22/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2-69CbP1DP4QA

Thanks. When the iPadOS comes out i will try one of those to see if they are supported without any additional app/software. This would eliminate one bottleneck.

However the capability of reading SD/microSD cards still would require a dongle as many of the dashcams or action cams do not show up in my iPad. So I would have to read he SD card directly.

"a new floating keyboard..."

Please, oh please, let that also bring back the split keyboard option, for the love of Pete.

Can anyone who's installed the beta confirm?

I see your point. I was thinking of the case where someone wanted to just use an external drive for additional storage. But yes, most laptops don’t have lightning ports, so you will need a dongle somewhere along the way if you want to transfer files from iPad to your laptop.

As someone mentioned, there are thumb drives with both lightning and USB connection, but I don’t know how well they are supported.

I don’t know, since my iPad and my MacBook Pro are both USB C. I wonder if lightning even puts out enough juice to run a 1 TB HDD? I’ll have to try it on another iPad once it’s released.

Wondering whether the 9ms latency improvement applies for the first-gen pencil and older iPads like the 10.5 Pro. They don't really rule it out in their disclaimer on the iPadOS site, but they also don't explicitly state it would and I already had the impression the second gen pencil is much smoother on the iPad than the first gen.

I am also wondering the same thing. Any answers yet?

talking about apple pencil first gen - will this have the same functionality as the 2nd gen? Can any devs confirm?

iPadOS is compatible with these devices.

Seriously asking... HOW does this make this fulfill any more potential than it did before? How does any of this make you more productive or make it a "proper companion" than it is now? I'm just not seeing how this fundamentally changes the iPad and how you interact with it?

Don't get me wrong - cool updates, but I don't see me using the iPad any differently than I do today.

The way I see iPad OS is as a way of seperating the functionality and options that the iPad will have from the iPhone. one of the biggest hits against iOS on the iPad was that it felt far far way too limited on the iPad. the iPad is really a ultra-slim computer that can have accessories added to it and could make for an excellent 2-in-1 device. The problem is iOS is just not that robust and far too limited.

While we're not seeing iPad OS yet expanding further on things like the better USB support for external drives and devices, or wireless mice. Diverging from iOS now means features like that can be added to iPad OS independently of the iPhones OS and device support. iPadOS can start making changes that benefit a tablet experience without risking breaking things on the iPhone with iOS.

this is a good move. Much much needed move that I hope will yield some massive benefits to the iPad

Can you edit in RAWs in lightroom directly from a hard drive or do you need to import into the app therefore using internal storage? Anyone know?

Yes we are - these are exactly the things that iPadOS *is* bringing to the table right now, not sometime in the future! This very thread has shown these things being confirmed by @ScreenSavers

This update might push me to get the expensive Apple Keyboard case for my 12.9 Pro and have a BT mouse.

I'm thirding this, I have the Logitech Crayon which is essentially the original Apple Pencil hardware wise. I want to say the improvement in delay has to do with the iPad itself. I wonder if this applies to the previous generation iPad Pro that doesn't have the promotion display?

I like that they're removing the shackles to offer what Android has had for ages. Still needs mouse support, command shell, background multitasking, standard file manager, more freedom to install apps like emulators, Kodi, torrent client, etc.

Well maybe with the anti-trust probe coming Apple could be forced to open up. It would be ideal if they can do their thing and take the money from what’s sold in their store. However if they are forced to allow users to install apps without their permission it would be ideal.
