I figure when they mentioned how they have optimized the size and speed of apps now that the older iPads like the mini 4 would still get support. May even be a bit of a speed boost if what they described is true

Some solid improvements; however, they're still feeding us features about as fast as a dripping faucet. Keep in mind that desktop operating systems have had everything they're brining for years. I like iPad/iOS and some of the features they're adding are nice (downloads in Safari, SMB shares in Files, better usability in slide over), but I'd still like to see apps be able to actually run in the background without getting kicked out (e.g. Panic's Prompt) and I'd love an actual, real, proper web inspector.

But before all of that I would like mouse support because editing long-form writing is absolutely horrible (even with these stupid new gestures that they're adding, which are fine and easier than before, but few people writing a lot with an external keyboard are going to want to keep reaching up and touching the screen).

This WWDC was stock full of wish list items. Well done!

The Files app looks and acts a lot more like the Finder, photos can be imported directly into Lightroom, hard drives can be connected and the tons of new ways to interact with iPad using gestures really ties up all the loose ends I needed to complete my move from the Mac to iPad Pro full time.

If they add mouse support then perhaps it will be interesting. . . Otherwise doesn't sound that different to me.
I am still stuck on 10.3.3 as they removed the ability for apps to see MAC addresses after this point.

Yes but apparently no more
Yes, more than two instances can be open at a time. It works exactly like regular iPad multitasking. Max two apps side by side, but also a third in slide over view, if you want. That’s why they added app exposé, so you can quickly see all the instances of the app you have open currently.

Hope my Original 9.7" iPad Pro (the first iteration) qualifies for this..but i'm doubtful.
It qualifies. All iPad Pro models, iPad mini 4 and 5 and all iPads from iPad Air 2 and up are supported.

Still no way to have multiple users? It's amusing to watch Apple slowly inch iOS forward while still keeping MacOS ahead, hey they do have to sell consumers 2 devices! Apple will withhold that mouse support until the bitter end though. Kudos to Apple for this teeny tiny miniscule step forward, but I'm quite happy with my surface pro.

No mention of mouse support most likely means no mouse support this year.....they probably prefer people who use mac os to use the ipad as a secondary display and then u get ya secondary mouse support which sucks........it's the exact reason why they have that new display mirroring or secondary display support app coming soon to iOS 13. At least it will soon support external storage and files correctly......and iPad officially will have its own OS for much better future updates...sure the mouse support will come.

To everyone bitching about no mouse support:

Reminder that all the rumors mentioning it specifically said it would be hidden away in the Accessibility options and would be for wired USB mouse, not Bluetooth.

We may still be getting this support once someone checks the accessibility options in iOS 13. I never expected them to announce it during the keynote because of the way the rumor was so focused on Accessibility.

Of course, the rumor could have been wrong and all of you are right to bitch. But just saying... hold the phone for 24 hours until some people check out the beta.

The iPad has always had so much potential, this kicks it up several gears! :D

This is soooo cool!!! Finally I can use iPad as a proper companion

Seriously asking... HOW does this make this fulfill any more potential than it did before? How does any of this make you more productive or make it a "proper companion" than it is now? I'm just not seeing how this fundamentally changes the iPad and how you interact with it?

Don't get me wrong - cool updates, but I don't see me using the iPad any differently than I do today.

I haven't installed the beta but based on the announcements here is my take:

  • The enhanced Files app is a welcome change and adds some flexibility
  • I still don't think that each app will be able to access the same files and folder structure on the iPad (a showstopper for me)
  • iPadOS remains an app centric OS and not a window centric. I prefer the Mac approach
  • Apps still need to be installed, just to make extra functionality available (via extensions)
  • I haven't seen any improvements to the Mail.app (across all platforms)
  • The new Safari is a step in the right direction. We will see how well it compares to its desktop counterpart.
  • The new multitasking gestures are interesting and add more refinement to the existing gestures, which do not work very well
  • Using the iPad as a secondary display to my Macs is a nice feature
  • The new floating keyboard is a great change
  • The new reminders app is irrelevant to me since I am using Things anyway..
  • No mouse support is a showstopper for me, when considering the iPad as a computer replacement
Overall I am happy with the direction the iPad is taking, but it still has a long way to go. The iPad with iPadOS 13 might make me feel a bit more comfortable to use it more, but I think I will still stick with my Macs as my primary computing devices.

Innovate? These are features people have been begging for ages. Unless there was some huge technical roadblock that was preventing apple from previously adding these features, this is just apple playing catch-up.

Isn't that what Apple's always done; make you wait 2-3 generations for the fully featured version? I think they squeezed enough juice out of just about everything in their lineup and are now opening the slow drip of changes again.

I thought, compared to previous years, today's announcements were pretty positive.

Oh FFS apple, just make a touchscreen MBP and be done away with these nonsense slideover, faux-multitasking. This is what users need and not what apple wants. iPads are meant for media consumption. Real work is done on a real computer.

My grandma is having trouble with these iterations of ipad features now it's so complicatedly stupid it's like fitting a square peg in a round hole. Just update your MacOS for touch and you will have a complete package (coughcoughSurfaceBookcoughcough).

I'm quite happy with my surface pro

Was thinking the same... I recently picked up a Surface Go to replace my 12-inch iPad with touch screen issues. My Surface as a tablet is "okay" but I only use it in that mode for casual surfing and reading books; I like that it quickly becomes a full desktop operating system where I can code, etc. It cost less than the iPad it replaces.

The sheer number of gestures is getting to be a bit much. It should be simple: swipe to task switch or select an app, swipe to check notifications, etc. All these "swipe from this corner to do this, that corner to do that, swipe horizontally for this but only in this part of the screen" is pretty ridiculous. I'm tech-savvy so I can learn and figure this out, but I have family members who are already genuinely confused at all the gestures (especially since some change with each major, annual release of the operating system).

That would be really awesome. I can't imagine the price tag though... certainly would be outside of what I'd pay (mostly because Apple's existing laptops are, in my opinion, priced too high for what they are).
