Guess my old iPad Air (the original from 2013) that I bought in May 2014 is ready to be retired this year. It was my first iPad/tablet. I loved iOS 7 on it. How fast technology advances in only a few years. Planning to get the new Air 3. At least the name stays the same

This really is an incredible update. And not just with “stuff people have been clamoring for”, but new, really imaginative features and ways of doing things that show they kind of have their second wind in Cupertino. Do I still want remote cursor (mouse & trackpad) support? Sure. But I am sure those items will be coming. Overall, this was just a blast to watch. Bravo to Apple. Most fun WWDC Keynote in a long time.

Imagine what kind of revolutionary features will be possible now.

Perhaps if we wish upon a star, we could even get a native calculator app.
The future is now.

Is iPadOS going to remedy the intermittent screen unresponsive-ness that many people continue to experience?

Two 12.9” iPads in my home, one 2017 and one 2018, and both have the issue.

And each has even been replaced once; accidental damage on the 2017 and warranty on the 2018 (for this issue).

:-/

Keep getting this on all my Macs... Screen Shot 2019-06-03 at 4.50.17 PM.png

Oh FFS apple, just make a touchscreen MBP and be done away with these nonsense slideover, faux-multitasking. This is what users need and not what apple wants. iPads are meant for media consumption. Real work is done on a real computer.

My grandma is having trouble with these iterations of ipad features now it's so complicatedly stupid it's like fitting a square peg in a round hole. Just update your MacOS for touch and you will have a complete package (coughcoughSurfaceBookcoughcough).

I disagree. Unless thy make it fold flat like a Surface a touchscreen would pretty useless. Reaching up to a screen and trying to do what a mouse does is a very poor experience. Jobs had that right.

I'm not the person you're replying to, but I have a 2-in-1 touch screen Lenovo and it's awesome. I can't imagine using another laptop without a touchscreen.

Fair enough. I have a HP elite book for work and it feels weird leaning across the keyboard instead of using a mouse.

The Mac doesn't need support for touchscreen displays. The way macOS is working is great and Apple shouldn't experiment with it. The iPad is the touchscreen based computer that Apple has, so do not expect Apple to go down the road that Microsoft went..

Could not agree more.

Apple's idea to just put a giant, perfectly working touchpad into the laptop base (I'm sure they didn't come up with it but they sure as **** perfected it) is exactly the right way to go.

God I hope so. So annoying when you touch the screen and nothing happens.

Guys, do i need a DEVELOPER PROFILE to install this ? or if i could find it somwhere without developer account it would work straightaway?(of course i wont just asking theoretically)

With mouse support, external drives and access to files on NAS, side-by-side documents, it's much closer what a computer is supposed to be.

Because it's a thousand times faster to make a precise selection with the mouse than with my finger. I just hope the mouse support is going to work with external displays. Look, one advantage of iOS is its unmatched security, compared to desktop system. However, it's very difficult to perform everyday tasks without a mouse, especially while working on an external monitor.

Also I get pain in my hand when extensively using a track pad or touch, but never with a mouse. You're moving your mouse with your arms or wrist. The fingers were not designed to be moved non-stop all day long.

I like that they're removing the shackles to offer what Android has had for ages. Still needs mouse support, command shell, background multitasking, standard file manager, more freedom to install apps like emulators, Kodi, torrent client, etc.

Of course. A few things:

1. I mostly use the touch screen in tablet mode (keyboard folded behind). Obviously this works fine.
2. Sometimes when I'm lounging on a couch with the laptop (in laptop mode) my arms rest along the sides of the device with my hands just at the monitor base. If I'm reading something it's super easy to just use my thumb or finger to scroll.
3. Other times it's just often easier to tap a dialogue box away.

Sitting at a desk in a more conventional manner to actually get a ton of work done, yeah I wouldn't be raising my arm and touching the screen; that would get exhausting.

I thought it was going to be announced when they were showing the finger method with selecting text. Then Craig jumped over to using the Apple Pencil so the transition to talk about using a mouse was gone. Maybe next year.
Mouse support is in accessibility settings. They just didn’t mention it on stage.
