I do it all the time - I just plug in my lightning cable. Charges phone and plays.

Lots of 3+ year old car stereos won't play newer iPhones via USB inputs and need the use of an Aux cable. With the iPhone 7, that means not being able to charge at the same time.

IMO they should never have ditched the glossy look. That jet black color makes the others look like knockoffs. But I'm gonna hold off till next year for the radical redesign. I also gotta upgrade my Mac this year, so I can't afford it. (I COULD but I'm not gonna take that hit in my wallet)

As for the presentation, Tim looked nervous, could be the whole debacle in Ireland. Mario and Pokemon were great, even if the latter was cringeworthy.
RIP iPhone 5c. My favorite.

The high-gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone.

How dense are you people? You can't hear a digital signal!

Stick a lightning jack in your ear, and let me know what it sounds like.

Sure, you have a point. But now audio quality can (theoretically) be determined by the headset since it's the DAC and not the iphone, giving you many price/quality options.

Remember when 3D touch was "amazing" and going to change the way we interacted with our phones? And now Apple takes away the headphone jack? Never stop innovating Apple.

What is the problem?

They are providing you an adapter free of charge. And they're moving into the fully digital world.

Umm...you do know audio is inherently analog right? Unless they remove all the speakers on the phone there already a DAC and amp that needs to be there.

In Los Angeles, people are in their cars for better part of the day. Ever try using a map app and listening to music through your phone without charging while stuck in traffic for 1 - 1 1/2 hours?

The poor slobs without bluetooth or USB can get a passthrough adapter. Problem solved.

Not to mention the battery life has increased again. 1-1/2 hours of music and navigation isn't exactly going to kill your battery.

So this confirms there is no good reason that Apple excluded OIS in the 6 and 6S
No good reason for retina display to be excluded from 3GS, no good reason for TouchID to be excluded from 5, no good reason for 3D Touch to be excluded from 6……

Going by your logic……

You got the age range wrong. It's between 18 and 25. The Millennials. They're either professional college students or living at home with Mom and Dad until 30. Their motto is "Who needs money when I get everything for free"!
Time for kick those kids out.

That all depends on the quality of the D/A converters and amps. High-end products will be able to include their own hardware instead of relying on the converters and (noisy) headphone amp built into the phone.

No, but now you can get much better quality A/D converter since that does not happen inside the phone. I really do not understand why so many people fail to see what a tremendous advantage that can be.

unless you're using a portable DAC, you're not gonna get better quality using a headphone with a built-in DAC.

What the actual crap. Like seriously for the guys that started the smartphone trend they are so behind the curve. Waterproof/resistance? Had that from a few Android models for a couple years now. Dual cameras? Again, beaten to the punch. And removing the headphone jack? Seriously? Way to not support the most common audio interface on the planet. Oh but it has an adapter? Wow another add-on to make sure you don't lose, because its going to cost at least 20$ to replace. Could have just left the headphone jack in, but apple had to do something noteworthy otherwise nobody would have paid attention to whats become a continuing line of lackluster phones.

I'm drooling over the jet black... Not so sure about the supposed easily scratching bit though..

There have never been subsidised phones, the cost was built into your monthly plan charge!

Actually, I think the cost of the iphone was built into everyone's phone plan, regardless of whether you bought an expensive iphone or not. For example, if you purchased a plan at ATT using your old iphone, (which was off contract) the rate plan was the same as someone with a brand new subsidized iphone with a two year contract. IE same monthly plan and cost. The iphone contract subscribers where better off because at the end of two years their $600 phone was worth $200, which is about what they paid for it. In essence they got to use a top of the line phone for two years at the same rate plane as someone who brought their own iphone or purchased a cheaper smartphone. However the people who couldn't afford the $200 upfront, actually help subsidized those who could. Anyway, I'm just trying to say that the cost of a subsidized iphone was never built into your rate plan, it was built into everyone's rate plan. The poor were subsidizing the rich.

I listen to audio on my iPhone 6 using headphones while sitting at my desk at work. All the time. Not being able to charge the iPhone while using headphones would be a major inconvenience.
Agreed. iPhone's short battery life makes plugging in to power & headphones at the same time a must for any long term listening. I expect a big market for dongles, docks & cases that let you listen & charge at the same time.

Not at all a win-win.
Audio is and always will be a analog signal, no getting around this.

And on the note of "free of charge", what happens when you loose your adapter (which, a ton of people will) that comes free?

There is a reason the headphone jack has been a standard for so long, its because it makes sense practically audio speaking, removing it is an inconvenience and there is no getting around that.

...says the guy who bought a phone without a headphone jack.
