Elementary, Watson, they do not run iOS/iPadOS. 😋 Besides, I was talking about a component, not a product, making a point it can be done and still remain profitable enough.
So it sounds like they don’t offer a better product for your use case this is the iPad mini but you are expecting features currently only available on the pro line.

First time the mini does not get the latest generation chip?
It's been a little inconsistent, although the last couple generations have used the latest A series chip available at the time. Looking at the history of the Mini:
Mini 1 - A5, last gen
Mini 2 - A7, latest gen
Mini 3 - A7, last gen (although realistically the Mini 3 was a Mini 2 with added Touch ID and nothing else)
Mini 4 - A8, last gen
Mini 5 - A12, latest gen (the A12 had been on the market for 6 months at the time)
Mini 6 - A15, latest gen

Anyone else kinda want an "iPad Pro Mini" of sorts that has tiny bezels, 9" display, OLED, and 120Hz? I feel like that would be a great size for content consumption when traveling or to throw on the coffee table as a lightweight couch computer. Then we would have 9", 11", and 13" Pro models starting at $699, $999, and $1299.

I don't even want to do anything "Pro" with it, I just want a great display in a really portable size.

I don't even need "great"...
I just want a better display than the relative "meh" they keep putting on these

Tim: Can we please pay extra for a screen upgrade?

I'll take the 120hz OLED option for $249 extra please

I wonder if this means no event? Still. My mini 6 is just fine.
Either we will get no event with daily drops of new models during this and maybe next week (most likely), or they will show something so awesome during the event that there’s not room for an iPad Mini (don’t hold your breath).

So yeah, my money is on no event, and all new products will be spec bumps like this one, except maybe a new Mac Mini which isn’t important enough to carry an event.

Does support of new pencil means they moved camera to horizontal orientation?
They haven’t, according to the graphics on the comparison page. While the new pencil was a prerequisite for moving the camera on the other models, the inverse doesn’t hold.

Apple makes up whatever BS they want to rationalize their weirdness. For a decade they said they just couldn't figure out how to do a calculator or weather app for iPad and the suddenly they brag about having those apps 14 years after iPad launched.

Apple is about marketing above all else.

I believe it's new naming standard
Makes a lot more sense than a generation number, when the products aren’t updated yearly. And fits with Macs - I don’t have a generation whatever Mac, I have an M1 Mac, and some have an M3 Mac, while others have an M3 Pro Mac. Very sensible and useful.

That and a good camera wouldn’t have me feeling so jelly.

It feels like Apple is becoming the McDonald’s of tech companies these days.

No M1 is a big mistake, a new iPad without at least that is almost already obsolete at launch because there are already certain features and apps that at a minimum require it. Very odd decision unless it’s now considered an iPad SE rather than Mini which used to mean high spec, small size.

Interesting to see if there is an October event now, or maybe they are putting all non Mac announcements in press releases to have more time to focus on just them. Hope a new Apple TV 4K comes in another press release.
