*sigh* I have begrudgingly ordered it. FYI, I’m a mini-only IPad user, having tried all the other sizes and found them too big and cumbersome. The pairing of the iPad Mini and iPhone Mini have served me well in recent years.

Is this update lazy, iterative, and underwhelming? Yes. It’s the bare minimum Apple could have done in the emerging AI era. Is it also a logical upgrade to my Mini 5? By default, it is. There is not a better small tablet option on the market as competition, unfortunately.

Apple has all the ingredients to make a truly special Mini, but will not do so because of profit margin. I’m saddened that they cannot see the appeal of making a really cool thing simply because they can, similar to a low-volume sports car. This update is further proof that Tim Cook’s Apple is completely driven by profit and volume sales.

Yes, I’m aware they are still getting my money, ironically. Consider this my vote to keep the Mini line in existence, even if this is not the exact Mini I believe should be made.

It's so frustrating

I refuse to believe the company would take some damaging "hit" to the stock if they were offering a bit more breadth and range in a few of the product lines

Obviously I'm just an "n of 1", but the way Tim has run things, they've gotten exactly $180 out of me on products in the last about ... 4-5 years? (money they refunded to me though)

(AirPods 4 w/ ANC)

I actually ended up buying them from Costco after returning my first pair to Apple, largely because Costco is amazing and I can change my mind in 4 months if I need to ... and/or they'll actually take them as a return if something deal breaking happens to them in say "9 months" etc

I would have bought a new iPhone Mini by now -- perhaps 2 of them
But that got cut

I have a generic android 8” tablet that use almost exclusively for content

I might see if I can find a 6 gen discount or refurb

I almost exclusively use it in landscape video content or portrait as an ereader.

So i don’t think jelly scroll would bother me to much compared to how sluggish my current device is

Would it have really eaten into profit margins THAT much for them to have given this thing the A18 or A18 Pro? The 6th Generation iPad mini got the A15 when it was brand new. That gave it and will continue to give it life to last! Ugh!

Anyway. All that aside, I think this standalone announcement makes way more sense than tacking a lone iPad mini release on an otherwise stacked M4 Mac release. Am glad to see that the iPad mini product line still has life left in it. It's really the only iPad for me.

I understand that. This is why Apple can get away with not offering Apple intelligent on iPhone 15. This is also why non-pro iPhone does not have always on display.

Yes, Apple is offering subpar experience with non-pro models. There is no reason that regular iPhone can’t have ProMotion display and always on display.
The whole "subpar experience" is your opinion. And be clear, most cell phone companies do what Apple does; different models with different features.

This actually happens with most consumer products.

Do you think most customer doesn’t deserve ProMotion, always on and iPhone 15 users doesn’t deserve Apple Intelligence?

And if users aren’t care, then why is Pro model is the most selling iPhone? Clearly people are attracted with ProMotion and all the benefits from Pro.

If the most customers aren’t care, then why isn’t regular iPhone being the top selling?

Jason Snell is meh on this update too.

What he says about this iPad mini generation to get a successor sooner rather than later makes a lot of sense. Apple wants to get rid of all the A17 Pros they have left and then likely release a more significant update to the iPad mini within the next two years. I don't see Apple producing a whole lot more new A17 Pros.

I suspect this is the case too. And the base iPad will finally move to A18. All iPad models become AI-compatible.

Has nothing to do with "deserving promotion or apple intelligence". If you really want those features, buy the pro model.

Let me give you an example. When Subaru initially came out with Eyesight for their cars, they only offered it in a options package (that included many other things I.E. sunroof). That option package was 4k+. They could have offered it outside the package but didn't, and forced people to buy options they may not have wanted to get Eyesight. If you wanted Eyesight, you hand no choice.

You realize the large majority of people buy the pro over standard because of camera? Stand outside an Apple store and ask 10 people why they bought the pro. 9 will tell you the camera.

Damn! I was really hoping the new iPad mini would have a notch or Dynamic Notchland. Notches are wonderful, and that's because Tim Cook is wonderful!

Interesting to see if there is an October event now, or maybe they are putting all non Mac announcements in press releases to have more time to focus on just them. Hope a new Apple TV 4K comes in another press release.
The telltale sign of a new Apple TV device would be the limited inventory of the existing Apple TV devices. So far we are not seeing that so likely nothing will happen this fall.

This has been discussed before. The two screens are vastly different in size.
Jup, people completely disregard aspect ratio and the fact that "the next inch" adds a lot more screen real estate than "the previous inch". The iPad mini has just over 76% more screen real estate than the 16 Pro Max (not accounting for rounded corners or cutouts for sensors), which is quite a significant difference.

The screen dimension difference is about 18%. Not sure how 76% more real estate is calculated here - please explain. Also, 76% more usable real estate (at lower pixel density and with similar scaling treatment by Apple)? I get it, it's easier to see things on a larger screen, even if it's just 18% bigger but it is bigger with a lower pixel density, lower contrast, lower nits, lower refresh rate and similar scaling treatement. I carry a Plus/Max size iPhone. Getting a mini makes no sense to me. Getting a regular iPad 10.9" or a 11" Pro, which are both compact enough for me and way better value instead of these lacklustre iPhone spare parts upgrades. Personal preference. I respect your and others' adoration for the Mini. Just not sure Apple is keeping it around for many more generations with this sad 'update'. Hence my tongue in cheek comment about the 16 Pro Max being the best Mini.
