The real news story here is that people are still buying MacBook Airs for Apple to bother giving the 13" base model an 8GB RAM standard configuration.
Wait, you think people are preferring the weak 12" MacBook instead of a 13" mba lmao

Stop winning! Why would Apple release after 1 year only a new model with new keyboard new ports etc after they invested in this design? Do you people use that brain or are you all 12 years old in this forum?
:)

You're completely correct. Apple invested in Trashcan Mac Pro and look how well it is doing almost three years later.

Yep, it would have been nice, but Apple probably didn't want to put an Alpine Ridge controller on the logic board. Katy Lake integrates TB3 into the CPU though, so the MacBook will probably gain it then.
It's also still USB 3.1 Gen 1, so only 5Gbs.

how would we know? they were literally just released
Stand down. I was talking about the specs on the CPU itself, not the entire computer. I'd imagine those benchmarks are already out there, just figured I'd check if someone here knew it rather than hunt for it.

About 10-20% faster CPU. So barely on the threshold of noticeable. Current MacBook owners most likely should wait for the Kaby Lake upgrade next year.

Thank you. That was my question.

I dunno why people are surprised. This is a spec bump, and until they are ready for the rMB to subsume all or most of the MacBook Air line it's unlikely to pick up the extra port or be significantly redesigned. It took two years and three revisions for the MacBook Air to get to its "final form" and another year before it replaced the MacBook; I'd expect a similar if slightly shorter timeframe this go-around.
+1
The MBA is in EOL notice. I wouldn't buy the Macbook now as it will clearly drop in price in 6 months when the new rMBP is launched (2H is the latest from "supply sources"). Don't get your hopes up for WWDC.

I'd get an iPad pro over this. Gonna wait for the MacBook Pro update at WWDC for more ports & power. But that's just me.

I weighed up the decision between the iPad Pro and the MB 12" in January, and for me it came down to the fact that I *still* can't really do most of the things I want to do with a highly portable device on an iPad, unless I accept huge compromises.

I'm probably not the average user, but I definitely need to be able to browse the web well (including weird websites, e.g. when abroad and trying to book accommodation on a website that looks like it hasn't been updated for 15 years!) and to download photos (both RAW and JPG) from my digital camera while away, both for back up and to do some light filtering/editing while on the go. For long journeys, I want the ability to watch films and also to potentially do a bit of work as I run my own business (e.g. writing blog posts and presentations in Markdown, maybe a bit of light (front-end web) development).

The iPad is OK for web browsing (but merely OK, IMO - badly designed sites are still a pain to use on it) and watching films, but useless for doing the kind of work I need to do, and the workflows for using it to work with photos from a camera are still far too convoluted and limited for me.

Once I realised this, it was an easy decision, and I'm happy to have gone with the MB 12" - even if it's not the fastest laptop, it's fast enough for simple Lightroom use, which is about the most taxing thing I do with it; and I can be far more productive than I ever could with an iPad (while using my MB Pro for "real work"). It's light and small enough that I can basically take it anywhere I would an iPad. I also bought one for my partner, who uses it as her only laptop (for mainly web browsing, Office and some Illustrator/InDesign), and she is delighted with it, showing that the performance is fine for "normal" users.

At this point, I can't really imagine buying another iPad unless I needed it for work - they're pretty, but I struggle to find anything useful to do with them that I can't do with my iPhone.

All that said, was expecting a more exciting update performance wise (given e.g. the HP Spectre, which sounds like it is quite a bit more powerful) but I'm not sure how realistic that is, and also we obviously don't know how much of a boost the new chipset will actually give. At least I don't feel like I need to get rid of my laptop and buy the newest model 3 months after buying it ;)

And also treating this product as if it lives in a vacuum or is the only laptop Apple sells. MBPs haven't been updated yet. I think it's highly likely new MPBs will be the retina MBA everyone wanted.

It's also still USB 3.1 Gen 1, so only 5Gbs.

In order to get USB 3.1, Gen 2 you also need the Alpine Ridge Controller. That controller adds both TB3 and USB 3.1 supporting the 10 Gb/s speeds. That's why it is missing those two things.

Edit: You probably already knew that. Don't know why I typed it out.

RIP Macbook Air.
Sadly I have to agree. My MBA 2013 gives me a ton of battery life and still the best desktop / roadwarrior combo.

W/o retina for the MBA, I will have to upgrade later this year (3-year cycle) to the new MBP (when released). Hoping for a new form factor and better battery life than current MBP. But will never match MBA battery life.

I travel less often now so my needs shifted from 60/40 travel/desktop to 30/70. I do most of my couch/bed slouching with my iPad, so a "heavier" MBP (vs MBA) won't matter as much. Battery life may be compensated by a smaller USB-C charger.

Because it wasn't what they want they assume Apple just made a mistake and would 'correct' it. Some people just have to have 20 USB 4's and six Thunderbolt 12 ports on their electric toothbrush, otherwise it's not good enough.

Some have actually mentioned Thunderbolt 3. Why? Why would this beautiful laptop, perfectly tuned to what many users want, need Thunderbolt 3? How many 5K monitors did you want to run off your ultra portable laptop? How many 20TB disk arrays did you want to schlep around with you, and why the f*** did you want an ultra light laptop to go with them ?

Exactly. No one is complaining about the lack of Thunderbolt on the new iPad Pro's. It's all about perspective. To me, the MacBook is the perfect product right between a iPad Pro and MacBook Air.

I'm going to complain to BMW because my car can't transport a 38 tonne shipping container, I mean come on BMW, you suck! Here's me thinking the new 3 Series would be able to pull a 38 tonne trailer. I can't believe this!

Also, please stop with the 12month old 'it only has one port' comment, what's wrong with people? If that's not enough for you, YOU'RE BUYING THE WRONG COMPUTER!

Damn, should have taken advantage of the $999 deal on the original rMB (plus 10% in BestBuy rewards this month).

What happened to a 40% graphics improvement?

It looks like the real winners here are the people who got in on the bestbuy $300 off deal for the first gen.

Looks like the MacBook Pro is up for a major revision later this year. :)

Probably at WWDC, so it begs the questions why are they keeping the MacBook Pro back for WWDC, my guess would be for either a redesign or they have something that's more important to add that warrants more than a silent update. But I'm also thinking why have the event at the Bill Civic building where they held the iPhone 6s, iPad Pro and Apple TV 4 event, it's a building of significance for Apple (since it's where they also announced the Apple 2 many years ago). It could just be because they want more people to be able to attend WWDC.

Apple is just to bullheaded to add one more type c port but at least they admit you need 8GB Ram.

If bullheaded means incapable of adding components where there is no room, then you are correct. I can't believe some people think Apple is actively depriving them of products/features for it's profit motives. There are lots of really smart people working at Apple. People seem to forget that the MacBook is an engineering marvel by itself, even with 1 USB-C port!
