It's now updated to come with 8GB standard.

Only the ignorant would think that. A quick look at the teardown and at the edges of the case show theres simply no room without redesigning the whole thing.

Thanks for the sanity.

People here were actually arrogant enough to think that Apple would redesign the whole thing just because people were whining about the lack of ports on the internet. I mean, really...

The biggest disappointment:

"Dual display and video mirroring: simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels at 30Hz on an external display, both at millions of colors"

What's the point of even advertising that it can support a 4K display if it can only do 30Hz? Might as well promote the use of 2560x1440 monitors. MacBook Pro or bust.

What happened to a 40% graphics improvement?

It looks like the real winners here are the people who got in on the bestbuy $300 off deal for the first gen.

Who promised a 40% graphics improvement gen-to-gen? The benchmarks for the CPUs and their integrated graphics have been out there for a while. Really in practical terms it probably means only that you can drive a 4K@60Hz, and the scaled resolution modes on the native panel will probably have smoother performance (like how the HD4000 wasn't really up to the task of delivering smooth performance on non-native scaled sizes with the first rMBP.)

If you got one, just a speed bump, anyone buying a new one gets a little more grunt.

Nothing exciting at all, and a very boring update. Cant see anyone with a version 1 updating to version 2. Well some will but its a small gain.

Bought this for work mid-January, it's an absolute dream.

As a previous PowerBook 12" G4 user, to have had this MacBook in University 10 years ago would have been amazing. It was tiny, when compared to PC laptops, but it was still heavy. This thing is so light, I don't notice I'm even carrying it anymore!

Trade-offs are completely worth it for a solitary slot. Plug it in when you need it to be, plug in an adapter to use USB, it's not that difficult. Use AirDrop if you want to get around the USB difficulties.

Those complaining, stick with the Air: this is not the evolutionary laptop you're looking for.

The real news story here is that people are still buying MacBook Airs for Apple to bother giving the 13" base model an 8GB RAM standard configuration.
This is probably the next phase of the deprecation of the line. My guess is that the rMBP gets updated to Skylake at WWDC, but the Air remains on Broadwell.

Yep, it would have been nice, but Apple probably didn't want to put an Alpine Ridge controller on the logic board. Katy Lake integrates TB3 into the CPU though, so the MacBook will probably gain it then.
Thanks for the great input !

One of the main reasons I roam in these forums ! Really good / useful insight from different users.

If I needed to buy a laptop right now I would without a doubt buy the less expensive, more powerful, more practical 13" MBA. No question. However I can easily imagine that by the time I need to buy a new laptop (I'm on a 2013 MBA right now and don't anticipate upgrading for another 3-5 years) the descendant of this MacBook will perfectly suit my needs.

That's probably not Apple's expectation. This is to keep the product current for new buyers. Remember Apple assumes ownership cycles of 3-4 years for the Mac.

Nothing mythical or dogmatic about it. It's called science. You should embrace it at some point in your life.

I don't doubt the science of battery charging, but you then have to apply it to the real world and life, where things get murky. It is here I find the mantra's around charging patterns to fail. What formula do you use to measure the inconvenience of being in a coffee shop with a dead battery and no plugs free or having to sit at a smaller table where there is one?

I know someone who charges their phone in the evening and unplugs it when full, before sleeping, so as not to overcharge overnight. He starts the day with significantly less than full charge, having wasted it in his sleep, and it doesn't always last the day when he needs it. I plug mine in when I go to bed, it's full in the morning and lasts the day.

funny how they do this all silently but reserve a full evening of talking about watch bands and a iphone 5 with new processor and a ipad pro in a different size. . Just proves how low priority Macs are for apple.

It's Macrumors. Unrealistic expectations are typical here. These same people would buy a Miata to haul their travel trailer through the mountains and get their panties in a wad when it won't do that.

To anyone who is looking to upgrade from a 2015 MacBook, note that Target Disk Mode works. You need to buy a USB 3.1-compatible cable, though. The Apple cable doesn't work. Monoprice and a few others sell them.

Maybe pricing? People still buy 16GB iPhones in droves too. Again, pricing?

This thing is priced at a rMBP level with much less laptop utility. One has to be heavily attracted to "thinner" vs. the "thin" of the rMBP (and the difference is measured in mm) or maybe aesthetics to rationalize this one vs. rMBP. Else, it turns into a game of narrowing in on butterfly mechanisms or "look at me" drivers.

The Air is Apple's lowest-priced laptop, does the job just fine, and has more day-to-day utility in the box than this one. Apple is artificially differentiating by holding back on giving it a retina screen but that makes this one expensive retina screen (+ "thinner").

10 guys will be ready to come back with why this is perfect in every way, even some use cases where this marginally thinner fulfills or even saves their lives.. or promotes world peace;). But- bottom line- air or rMBP can do everything this can do, probably better/faster, at less (total) cost, for the vast majority of laptop users. What this brings is mostly "thinner"... and food for the "latest & greatest" crowd. To each his own of course. Those who find what they are seeking here, enjoy it.

I'm going to complain to BMW because my car can't transport a 38 tonne shipping container, I mean come on BMW, you suck! Here's me thinking the new 3 Series would be able to pull a 38 tonne trailer. I can't believe this!

Wrong analogy if you ask me, it's like buying a BMW Z4 and finding a Mini engine in it, and only one seat..

Lol just realised that 8GB is only standard on the 13 inch model... great job skimping on the 11 inch Apple -_-
