Same here with my AirPods 2. 1 hour passed and my AirPods 2 still haven't updated. I tried listening to music and putting them back on the charger, resetting, switching phones, nothing seems to work...
My APP however, updated within 3 minutes, and I haven't done anything. So I don't know what the deal is, here.
Firmware on my APP is: 3A283
Well, guess what: 3 minutes after I clicked to 'Post reply' button (it was about 11:45 PM), the firmware on my AirPods 2 got updated. Really, Apple? It took about 2,5 hours to get the update on my AirPods 2, while my APP only needed 5 minutes.
Anyway, both my AirPods 2 and APP got updated to 3A283.
ANC is a little bit better on my APP, I haven't tried the Airpods 2 just yet.

Still don’t get why the Powerbeats pros aren’t getting the special audio features of the AirPods pros

have put both the phone and AirPods Pro on charge with AirPods Pro case opened and still waiting for the update :/

Updated the AirPods, found some spatial audio examples.. whats the big deal about Spatial audio? sounds basically the same as normal stereo with exaggerated reverb.. reminds me of the fake surround using stereo of years past..

Seriously. Everyone over-hyped it.

it’s a cool in all.

But what’s the actual use case for this?

Well this update seems to have trashed my AirPod pros

now I hear intermittent/ broken audio while on phone calls

Perhaps my imagination is playing tricks on me, but the ANC and music sound quality do seem a slight bit better than before with the new firmware release for my AirPods Pro and playing classical music via my iPhone 8. I don't have any version of iOS 14 yet, so can't test Spatial Audio. But I do feel like there is some improvement. I have no way to test in a controlled way, though. Your mileage may vary.

Weird how many people are having issues with upgrading the APP's firmware.
Mine is the opposite.
Found out about the update awhile ago.
Was going through the update steps when I noticed that my APPs were already updated to firmware 3A283!
It happens with every update as it does it automatically!
As many commenters have said here, and elsewhere, wished Apple would include a Manual update feature!

Let others test iOS 14 when it's released then download 14.1 when the bugs are slowly fixed.

apologies folks - but anyone having battery issues with 3A283? I just got the AirPods Pro yesterday, and it's been draining 1% for each minute of music. After 40 minutes, battery was 62%. When I went to charge it, each showed 28%. Then 42% after a couple minutes, and 99% after 14 minutes... Apple support was... useless.

After resetting, waiting 20 minutes. Nothing happened. I tried with both iPhone and airpods plugged in on my iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 14 beta 8.

I have grown into despair as I read everyone’s comments about successfully receiving the firmware update and experience another apple miracle while I sit in solitude. This has begun to stress me out throughout the day and I cannot alleviate any focus on anything other than updating this firmware. It has driven me nuts to the point I’m screaming in my house and my neighbors knocked on my door to check if I was okay.

The fact that nobody here is empathic to my cause speaks volumes about the community.
I don't think it is a question of empathy, it is simply a case of 'this is only a firmware update', no-one has died, the stock market hasn't crashed and I'm pretty sure that the sun will come up tomorrow. Every time Apple releases a firmware update these forums are awash with people who can't update within the first 10 seconds of the update being announced. Given time they will update or they won't. If they won't then they are broken. It is not a conspiracy personally against you. No-one has put a Voodoo hex on you. I mean this most sincerely but if the inability to update your Airpods is causing you that much pain - it is time to see a doctor.

Sat quietly waiting for it to maybe update, possibly, or not. Maybe I’m wasting my time and it won’t update until tonight. This is so damn stupid. Just give us an option to check/force an update. It’s literally the easiest option
I agree my friend - reading some of the posts on here you could be forgiven that Fanboys are jumping off cliffs in despair.

Apple: Just give us an option to 'trigger the update; how hard can it be?

Mine eventually updated while I was outside. It took anything from 3 to 12 hours though. I have no idea when it eventually loaded

This is how you update your AirPods so now what we’re going to want to do to update the firmware is listen to music or other audio content with the AirPods for at least 30 seconds. Put the AirPods back in the charging case and close the lid and connect the Lightning cable to connect the charging case to power. Wait 30 minutes.

This was given to me by Apple support

"Then reconnect the AirPods to the iOS or iPad device that they are paired to and you would be good to go!"

This line is confusing to me. At what point did you disconnect the AirPods that you now have to "reconnect" them? Could you elaborate? Thanks!

Quick follow up! It worked! I did not have to disconnect or reconnect anything though. I played 30 seconds of music, put them back in my case, then put the case on the charger with the lid closed. Checked it out of curiosity after a few minutes and it updated! Thank you!

Cannot get my AirPods 2 to update to the latest firmware by trying the tricks here. I am using the version of iOS 14 released today on a 2016 iPhone SE.

Update: They finally updated. Guess they have a mind of their own.

So, what changes this time, Macrumors friends?
The new firmware also introduced a loud rattling sound in one of the AirPods! It appears to be the microphone introducing and amplifying ambient noise. The noise is loud and pronounced from wind, talking on the phone or internal body noises (swallowing, etc)
The noise disappears if you turn off noise cancellation. Yes, I've rebooted, re-paired and restarted any part of the system I can. ;0) Its bad enough to not have noise cancellation turned off. meh. Anyone else have this issue?
