The issue I've had using my Airpods Pro along with my MBP 14 is when teleconferencing. The common application I use is Google Meet but others seem to have similar experiences using Zoom, Teams, etc.

The issue is that totally randomly, I will sound like a robot to others and their voices come thru very robotic. I can't seem to replicate the issue, it just happens randomly when on longer calls. If I take my Airpods off and put them back on that typically fixes the issue or also resetting my bluetooth connection, but neither are an option when on a meeting. It will typically resolve itself after a short period of time but again, everyone on my call asks what the hell I'm doing if I'm speaking.

I believe this is a Monterey issue because it only happens on my MBP 14, my M1 13 inch (work computer) still works flawlessly with the Airpods Pro. I know this isn't just me because others seem to have similar experiences. Hopefully this firmware issue helps this issue, the last one did not...

Oh god please no. I loathe all these “companion apps” for frikkin everything. A way to update AirPods in the settings would probably ease some tension at MacRumors for sure though. ?

As @nortonandreev said before and you are doing, too, the simple Software Update in Settings should be able to show and update AirPods at will. No more is required. That would 'just work'.

Apple today released a new 4C165 firmware update for the AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. The second-generation AirPods and AirPods Max were previously running firmware version 4A400. The AirPods Pro previously had 4A402 firmware available, and AirPods 3 were running firmware version 4B66.

Apple does not offer information on what's included in refreshed firmware updates for the AirPods‌, so we don't know what improvements or bug fixes the new firmware brings.

There is no standard way to upgrade the ‌AirPods‌‌ software, but firmware is generally installed over-the-air while the ‌‌AirPods‌‌ are connected to an iOS device. Putting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ in the case, connecting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to a power source, and then pairing the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to an iPhone or an iPad should force the update after a short period of time.

You can check your ‌‌‌AirPods‌‌ or ‌‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌‌ firmware by following these steps:
  • Connect your ‌‌AirPods‌‌ or ‌‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Tap ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌.
  • Look at the number next to "Firmware Version."
If we find notable changes after the firmware updates are installed, we'll share details, but the software likely includes performance improvements and bug fixes.

I hope this fixes the mics on my AirPods 2. Their sensitivity has been turned way down because they don’t hear me anymore. But I know they still work because when I blow into them or scratch with my fingernail near the mic, the Voice Memo app picks it up. And, no, I didn’t get them wet. It happened all on its own. First the right earlier this year and then the left last month. No AppleCare.? If this update doesn’t fix them, then it’s probably a hardware issue. We’ll see.??

happens on my MBP 14,
THANK YOU!!! So it’s not just me.

Exactly same setup, Teams. Just out of nowhere, everything turns robotic. I just shut up for ten seconds, then it goes to normal again. Annoying as hell.

Curious about the update…

I now have 4C165 on my AirPods Pro

took 10 mins after they were on charge and had been connected to a device

I just got the update too. In Orange County, Ca

So far the only thing I notice is my APP connects faster to my iPhone.

Heres hoping this doesn't wreck the great standby battery life I have been getting with 4A400 on my AirPods Max. Prior to 4A400, I was losing 10-12 percent whilst in the case, over a 18-24 hour period. With 4A400 I'm only losing 0-2 percent.

Successfully updated AirPod 3rd gen from 4B66 to 4C165. The case version also updated from 1.148.14 to 1.166.5.

I followed steps above (airpods in case, lid open, (wireless) charging, connected via bluetooth for at least 10 mins, then close lid while charging for at least 10 mins). I noticed the update occurred while the case was closed (and bluetooth disconnected while it was closed) so i assume this means the case/buds received update while case open/Bluetooth connected, and installed update while case closed/bluetooth automatically disconnected.

Also interesting to note the case battery went from 60% to 3% (charging the airpods from 60% to 80%) while the update installed. Did others notice this?

60 to 3? No. Zero perceptible drain for me.

Perhaps something to do with wireless charging, or my iPhone/Airpod case not reporting accurately before the update.

Edit: case reported 52% (+49%) battery after 20-25 mins on 10W wireless charger.

Yeah I optimistically thought it may be Monterey but it could just be a bug with the actual MBP14 & 16 and some internal bluetooth-related firmware. Really just guessing. It is VERY frustrating that my older MBP's work more reliably. I've refused to update my 2 13" MBP's to Monterey for this reason alone.

FYI you can also see AirPods firmware by keep the case closed or in pocket or not in use by going to:
Settings, Bluetooth, tap the info button for AirPods.
Done. 2 steps less than yours

How are you all doing wireless charging with the case open?????
My case was reporting charge while propped up by case lid on an anker battery with built-in 10W wireless charging pad. Perhaps it was not charging, hence the huge battery drop i reported for case, but iphone reported it was charging…

Is everyone that IS having luck force-updating on iOS15 (or newest MacOS)? I'm holding out on 14.8.1, and I'm at least 2 FW revs behind @ AB52 (not 4B66). Wonder if that's a secret requirement.

I have AP3 and a 14" MacBook Pro, I've never had any issues with Zoom, Teams or FaceTime.
