Is everyone that IS having luck force-updating on iOS15 (or newest MacOS)? I'm holding out on 14.8.1, and I'm at least 2 FW revs behind @ AB52 (not 4B66). Wonder if that's a secret requirement.

try
connecting the case + airpods to a charger
open case and see if settings sees the airpods
then leave for 20 mins
take out AirPods
and check version

that worked for me

Oh god please no. I loathe all these “companion apps” for frikkin everything. A way to update AirPods in the settings would probably ease some tension at MacRumors for sure though. 😂
Agreed!

Jabra themselves must be KING of companion apps - A version for every 2-3yrs of new models. Uggh. So glad i refunded my 7 Active's in time. Back on AirPods Pro ... the best in the game on all fronts.

I have been seeing excessive idle case battery drain that just started on my AirPod Pros with the last update, so I'm hoping this update addresses that.

This seems sudden as the last update wasn't that long ago right? Just a few weeks?
my case can not hold any charge at all anymore
I have to charge the case every two days

This procedure outlined by @TinyMito after the last firmware update has been the most reliable for me:

1. Open the case
2. Connect to your iPhone
3. Close the case
4. Press the power button on the case
5. Put it on your Qi charger next to your iPhone [my edit: Lightning fine too]
6. Wait 15min
7. Done

Oh, I love these precious few moments where I get to hope that the noise cancellation is fixed until I receive the update only to get sorely disappointed again. Fun ride though!

Love my airpods pros but the Soundcore Liberty 3 with their companion app appears to be a more than solid replacement.

It also helps if you hop around on your left foot and sing a song about Apple, or so I've heard. I seriously wish Apple would just put an "update firmware" button in the settings for this. 95% of users won't care, and the other 5% will stop having to find a goat to sacrifice to get their firmware updated in a timely manner.
Agree about the button. I still am on 4a version of firmware on my pros. Admittedly I dont use them really often but when I do I would like to force the latest firmware.

For those of you struggling to get your AirPods to update, just forget about it, and do something else productive. In a few days or weeks they will automagically update, and you’ll not notice any difference. Voila!
This.

The whole idea for this kind of updates to an Apple accessory is that *regular* people don’t even need to know about it.

This is a tech forum, so we’re not typically the target audience that these mechanisms are built for. I’d love the option, but I get why Apple designs this way.

You'll loose announce function for full hands-free notifications (apps and iMessages, alerts, Cal appts/meetings, etc).

Also what is the weight or comfort over long term? The Jabra Elite 7 Actives beat the liberty's by a few reviewers. Small ligther package ... but still uncomfortable (inner ear pressure) over 1.45hrs for me.

Every time I read that there is new firmware for the Max, I worry that it will bork the ANC much in the same way a firmware update borked the ANC of the Pros a couple of years ago.

literally got my update just now.

I tried a few hours ago and the "trick" didn't work
(connect to iOS device with lid open + connected to charger)

Took a 2 hour nap. woke up and tried again (left AirPods case on charger when I fell asleep)
1. unlocked phone
2. opened AirPods Pro case (still connected to charger)
3. Opened settings - bluetooth - selected AirPods Pro
4. Showed I was on the older version
5. Phone automatically went back to bluetooth menu
6. selected AirPods Pro
7. Firmware updated to 4C165

Your experience may vary. Just wanted to share mine.

First impressions (I listen to these every morning for 4 hours straight with the same songs/playlist)

1. Volume seems a little lower. I have to turn it up higher than I remember (it may be because its not the morning) will check back tomorrow morning to confirm.

2. Sound is more separated, the instruments and vocals have more detail and spacing. I can hear the depth of the instruments and the placement of sound better than before. (audiophiles call this "sound imaging" or "soundstage").

Will listen to them for a few more hours and let you guys know if its placebo or not.
