I had that same issue in my left ear! And when I talked, it would only get worse. Turned out it was a hardware problem and I had to send them in and get a replacement. This happens to a lot of people apparently

Oh no, I had this fear that it was a hardware issue. If you move your head, like if you are saying yes, you immediately hear this crackling/rattling sound. As if some screw being loose inside the left Airpod. In the meantime I reset the Airpods and also updated the firmware and it's still there. Will go over to the Apple Store this weekend and request an replacement.

I have the crackling sound in the left ear. The moment you walk or cycling, you hear this sound almost non stop.
Hope this firmware fixes the issue otherwise it's time to visit the Apple Store.

Edit: updated to 2D27 and the crackling sound is still.

My son experienced the same with his left airpod. His right started to experience massive feedback like tone when Transparency/Noise Cancelation was enabled. Apple replaced both next day. Same hardware version but not sure if these are more refined than the initial ones.

Saw this post and immediately updated my airpods pro , it was really quick i just opened the case plugged in the lightning cable and voila ! updated dunno whats new but i have noticed that it seems faster to connect the pop up window is almost immediate

you must be lucky because for me its still taking forever to upgrade the firmware

It may just be placebo, but I'm noticing a deeper sound and overall noticeably louder than before. Maybe it's just my brain lol but I can't go past 75-80% volume without feeling like I'm destroying my ears.

Also, there doesn't seem to be any iOS 14 specific features working yet.

"but there have been ongoing complaints from AirPods Pro users about issues with Active Noise Cancellation and crackling or popping sounds."

These aren't fixed :-(
For people who don't know the issue is that the Left Ear (only the left ear) sounds like something is loose and rattling if you move around, like when you are walking. It goes away when you stand still. It only happens for Transparency or Sound Cancellation, not for "None" mode.
For me I guess it began with the 2D15 build and, sadly, it's still here.

If I HAD to guess I'd guess that for the smart modes (Transparency or Sound Cancellation)
- the gyroscope is being measured (so nothing happens if your head is not moving), perhaps in some way to shape the sound being calculated against where your head will be in a few cycles as opposed to where it is right now
AND
- the calculation being used on right vs left side needs to differ in a few places (plus vs minus sign) to deal with the left vs right shape of the pods and ears
AND
- someone has made a sign error at one point of the calculation, so that you get perfect matching in the right ear, and anti-perfect matching (clicks) in the left ear.

Related: The ear tip test has a new "song" in iOS 14! But same result: try different tips

It is a hardware issue, they just replaced mine for the same thing, apparently loss of bass can accompany the problem. I just got on to support and I received my new ones today and they said its a common problem and didn't put up a fight. The new ones have much more bass and the crackle has gone.

i foudn helpful is to leave it plugged in and the case open while connected to and right by the iphone and leave it be and come back after a while

ive done that for over half an hour and still no result

Urgh why can’t something like this happen manually

I had this same issue and it requires a replacement

Release notes would be nice. I don't notice any differences in noise cancellation but the sound is good, but then I did not have any problems before.

I have had the rattling/vibrating issue in my left AirPod Pro for about a month. it would be present when Driving, walking, talking on iPhone, and when coughing. Just updated firmware and no issues, although i haven’t driven yet. Banging my head and walking with no issues. real test will be the drive home

update: there when in the left when moving briskly...

They need replacement, it's not a firmware problem.

I've actually had it occur in BOTH the left and right Airpod Pro. Left first, then right. They replaced each in turn one at a time with no complaint, but now the left unit is doing it again. I'm able to make it occur consistently by humming or making an OOOO sound. Also with this occurrance, I can shake the airpod and hear it rattle - it wouldn't do that either time before. Haven't called to have it replaced yet. Getting VERY leery of these things.

All i can say is that at the moment the left does sound a lot better than it did earlier today. Doesn’t sound like a blown speaker any longer with noise Cancelling on. About to be on a conference call to see if voices vibrate

I just grabbed mine from the charging pad they've been sitting on all day, and they've already been updated. I thought you had to physically plug the case in, but guess I was wrong. Not noticing much of a difference in noise cancellation; I can still hear a tv in the same room at normal volume and the AC in the next room with ANC on and no or light acoustic music playing at a reasonable in-ear volume.

Mine have the same issue :(

I bet the new Apple over the ear headphone in the fall will be amazing with this spacial sound and noise canceling. Have had the original air pods for three years time to switch over to the over the ears headphones.
