Nice. Maybe the right AirPod will charge now instead of being dead after a few days in the fully charged case.

To get your AirPods charging - you just need some Deoxit D5 contact cleaner. Put some on a lint free cotton bud - and wipe the contacts inside the pod - very gently. And then wipe the silver surface on the AirPods as well.

Apple have used two different materials for the charging - so pins in pod are different surface to charge points on ear pods. That combined with moist and salty sweat - will create a charge blockade over time.

Deoxit D5 cleans the contacts in no time and adds a surface protection so they will last slightly longer before next time.

DO NOT dose contacts like mad or spray them. Just a moisturised cotton bud....

Oh no, I had this fear that it was a hardware issue. If you move your head, like if you are saying yes, you immediately hear this crackling/rattling sound. As if some screw being loose inside the left Airpod. In the meantime I reset the Airpods and also updated the firmware and it's still there. Will go over to the Apple Store this weekend and request an replacement.

Usually the crackling sounds are from the microphones. To test it - just switch transparency AND noise cancelation OFF. (you do that on phone/iPad under - Settings/Bluetooth/AirPods Pro)

If crackling stops - you have defective microphones. Microphones are used all the time in both transparency and noise cancelation - so the only way to switch them off is to go through settings.

I had both R+L replaced on warranty.

I hear no difference with this firmware over 2D15. If I had to speculate, I'd say that this was nothing more than an update to support automatic handoff for those who are running the developer betas.

Just got the update and I think I’m hearing a difference in the ANC. I have construction going on next door and it seems like it’s is drowning out the noise of the saw completely, wouldn‘t get rid of anything before.

Edit: after saying it was unacceptable to pay $100 to replace a faulty product, the kind lady escalated the call to her boss. The boss replaced them for free. Ty Apple for doing the right thing... but only after I told them it was unacceptable to be charged for it.

Original post: I bought AirPod pros right before corona. Painful crackling in the left ear. I figured I’d wait for a software update. Anyway, after today’s update- they are even worse.

i called Applecare and just now and they had me do a “reset”. Well, the reset made it even worse! Now cracking is much more painful AND in BOTH earbuds now.

The nice lady then explains that bc I have applecare, I can replace them for 29$ per earbud and 29$ for a new case. Uh, WHAT?!

on top of that, they will not do the custom engraving I have on my original case.

I haven’t called Apple customer service in years. It used to be what I bragged about to my friends when trying to convence them to switch to Apple products.

Sadly, I could at least use my AirPod pros before I called, but now, the crackling is in both ears and worse. I cannot us them anymore.

I just got the new update, too, plugged in Pros to charge, flipped open the case to make sure my phone saw them, and 10 min later the update was applied. Will have to give them a listen later to see if there's any noticeable difference, especially when watching a movie.

I had that same issue in my left ear! And when I talked, it would only get worse. Turned out it was a hardware problem and I had to send them in and get a replacement. This happens to a lot of people apparently

did they make you pay? They told me that it would cost me $100 to replace them

Do I have to do a Conga Dance around them to get them to update?
This is ridiculous!

Why exactly? Airpods are not meant for power users. The vast, vast majority will not even know a firmware exists, don’t want to be prompted to update another gadget. It’s no MacOS.

My AirPods were just updated from 2D15 to 2D27. What I've noticed is that the noise cancelling feature doesn't work very well for me anymore. Prior to the update, I couldn't hear anyone talking in the room or the tv background noise. Now I hear everything except the volume is muted somewhat. I also tried the "Ear Tip Fit Test" and it fails regardless on what size (small, medium, or large) ear tips I use. Very disappointed with this firmware updated. Is there a way to revert back to the previous version, 2D15?

in iOS 14 (and I think iOS 13):

You can check your AirPods Pro firmware by following these steps:

Go to Bluetooth
With AirPods Pro connected tap the i
look under About

Strange, I would not expect that because of a firmware update. I just tested mine and I still get a 'good seal' after updating to 2D27.

the fit test has nothing to do with firmware. It seems to work initially, and then stops (at least for me and a lot of people). I have had no problem with noise cancellation since the update, and the one before that that people waned about either

oh, and the crackling and popping sounds only apply to Spotify (for me) and older AAC encodes on Apple Music, New music does not seem to have this problem at all. And the popping sounds carry over to other non AirPods Pro, so I doubt it is an AirPods Pro problem. Probably just in the software on older encodes or poor encodes

I would really like to speak to her about the hot garbage that is airpods pro firmware. The ANC and connectivity issues are the worst experience I have had with an Apple product. Thanks Mary-Ann

I have the crackling sound in the left ear. The moment you walk or cycling, you hear this sound almost non stop.
Hope this firmware fixes the issue otherwise it's time to visit the Apple Store.

Edit: updated to 2D27 and the crackling sound is still.

My left Airpod would never connect first try- always had to put it back in the case, wait about ten seconds and try again. Requested a replacement in early May and it's been flawless ever since. I'd recommend reaching out for a replacement (before you can't!)

Here's this for a feature request: how about making a way to update the firmware manually? This is the only Apple device like this. Ridiculous.

Apple is adding this feature, allowing you to decide when you update. And it will remind you that there is an update available every hour, announcing over your music. Kind of like the iOS model of updating.

Spatial audio probably going to be just as messy.

It’ll probably give people vertigo and cause them to vomit.

Here's a possible fix for the crackling issue. I haven't updated mine yet to see if this issue is fixed. This may or may not be the same reason others are having an issue, but this affects me consistently, and is a bug:

If you have your iPhone set to be a Personal Hotspot, the crackling issue happens fairly consistently either if you've had the AirPods connected before then turned the Personal Hotspot on, or maybe it is the other way around. I can't remember.

Quick fix is to disconnect the AirPods from bluetooth, then reconnect, and the crackling goes away.

Hopefully this is addressed in the current update to firmware, or it could be an iOS issue. Maybe someone who can reproduce this consistently can submit a bug report to Apple with the details that at least this one issue relates to the Personal Hotspot.

"but there have been ongoing complaints from AirPods Pro users about issues with Active Noise Cancellation and crackling or popping sounds."

These aren't fixed :-(
For people who don't know the issue is that the Left Ear (only the left ear) sounds like something is loose and rattling if you move around, like when you are walking. It goes away when you stand still. It only happens for Transparency or Sound Cancellation, not for "None" mode.
<snip>
Have Apple replace it, your crackling problem will magically disappear. The firmware is fine.

I didn't have before Share Audio, maybe this is one of the new things in the update

Release notes would be nice. I don't notice any differences in noise cancellation but the sound is good, but then I did not have any problems before.
Few do. Some are driving themselves crazy thinking they can detect less bass/more bass, better ANC/worse ANC, louder volume/not louder etc., etc., etc.

both mine got replaced for free - but it took 30 min "diagnostics" - try the diagnostics I detailed above (so disable transparency and ANC and see if they still crackle. If they do the microphones are defective.
