Before the 2.0.1 update I could rent an HD movie and begin watching it within 2 minutes or so (whenever it reached about 2% downloaded).

After the 2.0.1 update I noticed that apple has added a prompt that tells the user when the movie will be ready to view. Well, it said 1 hour for the first 10 minutes despite the fact that 4-5% of the movie had already downloaded.

Anyone else experiencing this?
With 2.0 we can watch a HD rental within about 30 seconds, but it downloads only JUST faster than we're watching. Would hate to lose this (despite the benefits of faster browsing through video lists)

Any chance that the problem you're describing is actually the network problem others have described? (ie: your internal network is much slower?)

You both may be describing a "damned if they do..." scenario. Some people want to watch a movie without any stuttering or interruptions, some people want to watch a movie with as little delay from the time of their purchase as possible. Between the two, since Apple is most concerned with the perception of quality, I would understand if they erred on the side of the former and delayed the start time of the movie a little more to give the apple tv more time to d/l.

Just a guess, of course, since I'm in Canada. ;)

I assume it's a similar calculation that Quicktime has to make when watching a movie trailer, or when we watch youtube clips.

Mostly I'd say people want both quick start and no stutter. I can understand Apple erring on the side of caution. I've been quite annoyed at watching a video trailer and having it pause midway, then start again only to pause again. I'd much rather that the moment it pauses, Quicktime assume the worst case scenario from the stats it has before it restarts the playback. As it is it restarts soon after then pauses continually through a trailer (so I pause it manually, wait a minute, then press play).

It'd be nice if Quicktime could use past history to better predict the likely throughput. For consistent connections it's easy to look at the speed - but for ones that change it'd be great to have a calculated range of speeds and play appropriately.

If Apple has switched to "make sure you have more cached" for the AppleTV, in contrast to "calculate more accurately the possible start time", that would be disappointing.

2.01 fixed the slow scroll problem when moving through video podcasts as the thumbnails were displayed. Goof job Apple. Thanks

All working fine here :) (Although no real discernible difference as far as I can tell).

Nice update, downloading it right now... Would have really liked to see Grid View Genre like in the store though. Maybe with 2.0.2 :)

i think if apple made the apple tv more versatile it would sell a lot better

for example
time capsule
airport express & extreme
apple tv

could all be done by one single device
maybe even give the option to add a blueray drive and access your ipod/iphone

time capsule via an external usb drive like the airport express

Was hoping this would fix the issue in iTunes 7.6.1 where in no longer sees the Apple TV - no such luck

Still a 7.6.1 issue :(

Anyone know where/how I can roll back to 7.6 the wait for an update to iTunes is really annoying

itv not appearing in itunes

i had this issue, had to uninstall itunes, reboot, reinstall itunes then apple tv appeared in the itunes device list.

Fixes:

Steaming from a PC - when you finish the TV or Movie, the next time you view it again, you still get "Continue from last viewing" or "Start from beginning". If you click "Continue", of course the show just ends. Fixed.

In 1080i output setting, seems like some studdering when viewing an HD Podcast downloaded to the unit (Hubble HD). Now, the video plays silky smooth!

NOT fixed:

YouTube still "stalls" when viewing longer videos.

A few things

(1) It's not faster. It's the same as before. By the time the next update releases, everyone will be complaining about how slow this one is, and then will rejoice over another imaginary "speed boost" in the interface.

(2) Shouldn't it be that, when clicking on My Movies, I get a list of genres, with an "All Movies" button at the top? Isn't that the Apple Way? Why is this backwards?

(3) You still cannot clear downloads from your tv. This is the biggest oversight yet. Why? Because when you encounter a download error, it leaves the partially downloaded file in your tv. Even if you download it from your computer when the tv continues to get download errors, it doesn't clear the episode off the tv. This happened to me, and I wound up having to reset the box and resync 100+ GB of content.

(4) All that said, I still love this thing. If I could get somehow get ESPN without cable/satellite, I'd drop tv services altogether and just use the tv.

I had this problem when I first installed AppleTV 2.0 and iTunes 7.6.1. I reset the AppleTV (requiring a new sync of all my media) and now it has worked fine for a few weeks.

It was frustrating to re-sync, but well worth it now that everything works.

Yes, it was a 7.6.1 thing. When I updated to it, I couldn't stream my purchased content anymore. I had to go to my server, try to play the content, it would then ask me to re-log into iTunes. Everything played fine afterwards.

Everything great here, much better experience. Downloaded a SD movie, and an HD movie at the same time and they both popped up with 30 seconds telling me they were ready to watch. It has also helped that last week I went to 5Ghz strictly on my N network since there are about 20 wireless networks in my area.

How did you do this?

I heard you can run a separate N network for your N stuff, and keep your old G network for older stuff.

Proof would be found in the last update thread, where everyone was rejoicing over the faster interface... and now everyone is complaining about it, and rejoicing over new imaginary speed boosts.

Not really sure why watching sports disqualifies me from understanding technology, but ok. My assessment that the interface is no snappier is valid. And my claim about the Genre / All Movie structure being backwards is extremely valid. Look at iTunes itself... when browsing music, you first get a list of Genres, with an "All Genres" option at the top of the list. I would think everyone who's been complaining about wanting Genres on the tv would agree that the extra click to get to the Genres list is not necessary.

Bottom line is, it's a great piece of technology, but not without some glaring flaws. I'm a huge Apple fan, but I'm also realistic enough to know that being excited about an update doesn't equate to a faster interface. Some aspects of it I would even say are slower after the update. And the new Genres menu is the slowest of all.

Yeah I would happily do this but the only prob being is that I purchased a load of videos on the ATV before realising that it dropped from my devices list in Itunes. So if I do a total reset I will lose all my purchased content that isn't synced yet and I don't think there is any other way to get to that content or redownload without being recharged?

Anyone? PLEASE!!! :confused::(

Are they here yet?

Video playlists?

Shuffle?

Repeat 1 or All?

Basic iTunes-like functionality?

I didn't think so.

Ouch. Someone else suggested reinstalling iTunes, or "Yes, it was a 7.6.1 thing. When I updated to it, I couldn't stream my purchased content anymore. I had to go to my server, try to play the content, it would then ask me to re-log into iTunes. Everything played fine afterwards."

Maybe one of those things would work. Sorry I can't be more help.

Getting some of the above issues:

- Scrolling through "genres" is slow as molasses. And that is slow!

- It loses the network connection, only since this update, forcing a re-entry of the network password. It's running "802.11N - 5ghz" only mode. I made an adjustment to the multicast rate. If it happens again, I'll try to disable the wide network setting.

Me too, with a Toshiba LCD via HDMI. Either I see the Apple logo (and it's unresponsive) or just a blank screen. A restart is the only thing that gets it going again.

I also have a Toshiba LCD TV connected via HDMI, and this happened to me for the first time today after updating last night. Weird...

YAHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited. With over 430 movies streamed to my Apple TV, browsing by genres has been the one feature I've been waiting for!
