Another New Feature of 2.0.1?

I rented an HD movie after updating to 2.0.1 and when pausing the film, I noticed that it lists the chapter title above the progress bar. I don't know if it did that before, but I don't remember it doing so. Can anyone conform that?

So glad I went wired!

With all the talk of wireless issues I'm so glad I finally got around to hooking it up to my Time Capsule via Ethernet. Even after the issues I was dealing with in placement (don't place the :apple:TV on a metal surface (like a DVD player) if you want decent wireless), when I replaced the Airport Express with the Time Capsule I could not get the :apple:TV 2.0.1 to see the wireless, so I just patched it in, and problems solved.

I don't like 2.01.
Trying to download Balls of Fury in HD. Getting the "ready to play in 37 minutes" BS. For every other movie rental, I have been able to play within just a couple of minutes.
We used to have a 30 second wait, now it says an hour (I had to go out so didn't see it's progress beyond 5%.

The strange thing is it actually seems to be downloading more slowly. It's not just caching more before playing.

1% of the 90minute movie took 1.5 minutes. So 100% would have taken 150minutes. That's 2.5 hours to download a 1.5hour movie.... ie a 1 hour wait.

Very odd, I think.

edit: my internet records confirm my estimates. It took about 2.6 hours to download this film.
Records show I was downloading at 1300MB an hour. I used to download at 1850MB an hour. If it was just me I'd say maybe my router was playing up... but it's not just me.

edit2: My router definitely was playing up. Connected at 3Mbps instead of 6Mbps (reboot brought it back to regular speed). Perhaps due to the huge storm last night... certainly I can't comment on speed. (and can't test further for now).

Add me to the list of dropout issues. Before the TV would only lose the wireless connection when waking from sleep. Never would I lose my connection while syncing or downloading an HD movie.

Now, I get that annoying message "there has been an error downloading the movie" after about 20 minutes or so. In checking the downloads section there's an error code of -3950 (I believe that's what it was)...

Turned of Wide Channels on my AEBS as was suggested in an earlier post...will see if that solves it.

ARGH!!! You'd think w/all the other posts of drop offs and having to re-enter the WiFi password we experienced in 2.0 that they'd at least fix that one issue.

UPDATE:

FWIW, over at the Apple Discussion boards it seems folks are having luck changing their AEBS N Routers over to 2.4ghz instead of running at 5Ghz. Will try that next (but it's quite a bummer to have to do that).

Re: slow movie downloads

When 2.0 came out, I tried renting movies within minutes of the update. They took about 3 hours each to download.

Since the same thing is happening today, I'm guessing that pushing the updates is putting a strain on the network and slowing down the downloads. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but the day after the 2.0 update, downloads were speedy, and I bet the same happens with 2.0.1 on Monday. (And I bet that even without updating, you'll have to wait a while to get a movie tonight.)

Yes, Apple should have more faster servers so we don't get this every time they push out some update, but... it DOES happen, people.

Welp, I had the same problem as the others. After upgrading to 2.01, the ATV network connection slowed to a crawl. When streaming from my iMac, the connection would stall out and downloads from YouTube took forever.

I am using a Linksys WRT330N router. I had to go into the settings and switch wideband off. Sure enough, it did the trick. The network connection is back up to full speed before the 2.01 upgrade.

I don't know what Apple did but I'm not sure if I like it.

I downloaded the update and gave it a whirl.

What a major improvement in terms of the UI speed and responsiveness!

When I upgraded to 2.0, the UI had a major lag and was very unresponsive.

2.0.1 definitely fixes this.

I would even say more than 2x the speed for me.

New change...

I didn't see anyone comment on this yet in the thread... After updating the AppleTv software, it no longer appears in the "speakers" option in iTunes unless it is on. Before the new update, it would show up, but it wouldn't let you play to the TV unless it was on... It would just say that the speakers were currently being used by someone else.

Yes, I noticed that also. Seems to be one of the bug fixes.

Makes sense, good thought.
There could also be a couple of interrelated factors... there usually are when people are getting inconsistent results.

Look forward to trying it again on the weekend :)

Is Wideband an 802.11N option only?

Much snappier for me

So my :apple:TV was real slow at loading movie cover art when browsing the :apple: store and trailers would take 3 or 4 minutes to load before starting. The issue with the trailers made it impossible to browse them without lots of annoying down time. Now they start within 10 seconds and it is much snappier. Also, I use an Ethernet connection and I have not had any dropouts. I have not downloaded any movies yet.

Overall, this is a very good update for my system. I was thinking I needed a faster home internet connection.:)

This update seems to have resolved an issue I was having with play count updates not properly syncing back to my iTunes database. This was causing my iPhone syncing to mess up and copy shows that I had watched on my AppleTV, thinking they were new.

Do Apple not test their products?!?

Hey Nightstorm, I was having that problem too! Think we may have discussed it in a previous thread? Any how, I haven't tested it yet, but that is good news if it has been done. Did you have to do anything special after the update? A reboot prehaps? I updated last night but haven't got around to seeing if mine syncs properly now. Here's hoping! :D

P.S - The genre filtering, however a worthy inclusion, has been implemented in a way that leads me to believe Apple just don't test their products! I mean c'mon! It's hideous to use and completely unacceptable! I don't know what sort of Test Engineers they have at Apple but they need to sort it out! There was no pressure or expectation for this update, at least not from an external POV.

Cheers

Music Video Continual Playback

I'm waiting for update 2.0.2 or .3 or .4.... Music video would be so much more fun if it played continually. :)

I think we did talk about it in another thread... I know there were a couple of us that were having the problem. I don't think I did any reboot/sync other than what happens when you install the update. I tested it last night with a number of shows, and everyone of them updated correctly in iTunes. Let me know if you still see the problem and I'll look at my config again. So far, I'm a pretty happy camper with this update.

i think if apple made the apple tv more versatile it would sell a lot better

for example
time capsule
airport express & extreme
apple tv

could all be done by one single device
maybe even give the option to add a blueray drive and access your ipod/iphone

time capsule via an external usb drive like the airport express

Actually, I was wandering if I should get a ATV or a Mac mini as a home media center... Any thoughts?

Keyboard Updates Too

I noticed today that the keyboard has had a couple of updates. You can scroll from Z to A, etc now. Also when u hold the left or right button down, the fast scroll on the screen is slower (and IMO, more manageable).

Spicyapple???? !!???

I'd like to see Movie folders and playlists, like we have for music. That will make me most happiest. :)

My 40GB is out on loan, and my 160GB is at a friend's house, so I am stuck here AppleTV-less.

spicyapple is back???

Thanks to everyone who has put up with me the last several months, but I've finally had enough of MacRumors. It's true, but it has nothing to do with the great members here. It's me. As of today, I will no longer be posting and sharing Mac stories, help and musings with y'all.

Why?

I've decided my life needs to move on, and I cannot do it without focusing my energies on where it needs to go. Thanks for the fun times, y'all.

Take care,
spicy (4/1/2007)

I see you still have a picture of that Canadian singer chick in your profile, dude.
