They fixed that some time ago on one of the updates, don't remember which one - if I stream from iTunes, I just turn the ATV on, activate airplay, switch the receiver over to that input, and it works fine.
If the TV is already on and I switch it off, there is a momentary interruption, but then the audio carries on.
And this is through the HDMI Cable.
Sounds like something else in your setup is causing the problem, such as your TV settings. There was one in ours that caused the TV to come on if any device is activated and the receiver is switched to that input, but we turned that off.

Interesting. Still not working on mine and I'm up to date, with the exception of this latest update (I have the ATV2 model).

Am I the only one who loves the AppleTV here? It does exactly what it claims to do, and very well.

Frankly, I'm just indifferent towards it. If Apple rolled out an app store for the AppleTV, then I would take notice. But right now, Plex does quite a bit more and offers more flexibility for my needs. If you love the AppleTV, that's great! It's a cheap-but-effective solution for media playback on your home theatre.

Instead of arguing the relative attributes of the Apple TV, could somebody who has downloaded it report on how the update functions or any problems they encountered....TIA

If they ever drop in support for hulu, this box would really be nice. The only thing appleTV has over others at this point is iTunes store and airplay support. Otherwise, Roku STILL beats it. :(

It also beats the heck out of Roku on the UI front. Sorry, but I've had both. Once MLB came to ATV the Roku was donated to a less fortunate friend.

When will apple offer internet browsing on the Apple TV? Thats what I'm looking for in a update.

Browsing on the Apple TV? How would you navigate through web pages? With that silly control that is shipped together with Apple TV?! Seriously?

Ah no wait, off course you would use Apple Remote which is installed on your iPhone, or even better: your iPad and then you could easily... hey but wait: if you have your iPad holding in your hands in the first place, why not use THAT for browsing the web, and if you want to see it on the Big Screen, why not mirror your display to the Apple TV?!

Sometimes... but really just sometimes... it is good that Apple doesn't listen to their user base...

Hopefully you have opened the box and saved your SHSH blobs for 5.0. If Apple stops signing 5.0 which they will now and an exploit is found in 5.0 that doesn't work in any subsequent released, you'll have to jump through extra hoops to make it work.

And how does one...do that? Sounds like a very good idea, especially as I've now read about Firecore.
Any links?

I guess you are running through a receiver to the TV?

I had a look and I believe it is RIHD (Remote Interactivity Over HDMI)
This is a feature on the receiver not the TV (My Bad)

I'm running optical audio straight to my receiver, but HDMI a+v straight to the tv. And I do use the HDMI, it works fine, but I want the audio to work through the optical out without the tv on...which apparently it can, as you say, but I'm not sure why it won't in my case.

Damn. Thought this would have fixed Netflix for me :(

Looks like its back to ripping blu rays.

Could someone explain how the new UI is bad? It took the iPhone/iPad UI and made it 16:9 with artwork up top. I find it superior in every way.

The Apple Tv is great, and the although I like some of the functionality of the new interface, not a big fan of its new interface:
It looks like a halfway house of a design: half app icons half old interface, which don't altogether mesh well. The icons are large and gaudy, in contrast to the graphics used in the upper section (which are more illustrative, softer and scaled differently)
The Icons/carousel menus/text menus aren't working brilliantly against each other, sometimes repeat functionality, and lose the sense of an overall integrated design (because they operate differently at look different).
There are now several menu and submenu styles, which break up the sense of continuity.

None of this is stopping me using it, though. My only real gripe is the cost of the rentals (don't get me started). Also really looking forward to getting streamed purchased movies in the UK.

I wouldn't be surprised if a rethink of the interface is around the corner, should anything new on the hardware front get released, say round about the last quarter of this year...?

Back on topic, can't see anything new about the update, other than my trailers aren't working at the moment...

Btw, does anyone else have the (minor) problem where the white LED light on the (2nd gen) Apple TV goes on after the device falls asleep. It happens randomly, usually a few hours after it falls asleep. There is no HDMI signal, yet the light is on.

I wonder if this update will fix it...

Yeah I have this too. I first thought it was being caused by the EasyLink on my TV, but I've set that out and it still does it.

A lot of idiots on this thread....

Apple clearly defines what ATV is and what it does. So why are people bitching about the lack of NAS and other functions after they have bought it?

The problem seems to be with people's ability to read and comprehend. If you want a device with other functions, buy something else...

Well, I use my ATV for Home Sharing, Netflix and Airplay.

When I turn on the ATV, the top half of the screen is advertising movies I'll never rent or buy. The lower half then shows Movies and Music - which doesn't show my movies or music, only shows iTunes movies and music so are no use to me. Computers and Settings are the only 'apps' I use on the first page, I have to scroll down to get to Netflix.

It'd be great to be able to re-arrange the UI (or hide buttons I never use) so MY stuff is visible on the Home screen, not just iTunes advertising. Not a huge issue, but you asked why we don't like the UI.... :)

I'm really happy with the Apple TV and am using the Airplay functionality a lot - if you have an iPad or even an iPhone then the Apple TV is a logical purchase.

Three things, off the top of my head, that would improve it would be.

1. Customisable menus i.e. the ability to hide the menu icons that you don't use such as Netflix, MLB etc.

2. Some regionalisation for UK users, built in "Apps" for the BBC iPlayer, 4OD and ITV Player would be great.

3. Ability to stream from NAS type drive thus not requiring your main computer to be on.

Sure, it would be nice if it could play more file formats but that's not what Apple ever intended for this box.

I want antenna input on these things!!! Otherwise, they're somewhat useless. You can't even watch TV on the Apple TV.

Ummm....because you can't attach the antenna to your TV? Seriously? That's a complaint?

I would love to see:

Nas streaming/time capsule
Dts and mkv support

Just this i would be happy :)

Current atv is awesome but it could still need improvement

Well, this didn't fix my issue of losing home share after a few hours, which started back in March.

I'm thinking an iTunes update is required to fix whichever update broke it in the first place.

that UI still looks like something Microsoft could have come up with 5 years ago. ugly as ....

And the purpose of ATV is to view the Menu Interface in HD for hours?
Get a new horse. Don't purchase the product if it inflicts pain on your optical nerves. It's a tiring Mantra.

The sales speak for themselves, as always. ;)

Are sure your looking at the interface correctly? You like ATV? ;)

My guess is that because the audio is sent to both the TV and the Receiver, that is why the ATV switches off when you turn off the TV.

Disabling the audio on the HDMI to the TV would probably then stop it, but as you have it configured that way, I imagine it is because you want the audio to both sources

SO, has it fixed the homeshare issue where it gets dropped repeatedly?! This is the most important thing for me!
