 needs to step up their game as soon as possible, I was expecting a major redesign iMac this time, very very disappointed ! How can a company keep the same design, same concept on the market for like nearly 8yrs ?! We need that  who used to inspired the user and professional to do their job in a new way, I’m gonna keep using my 2012 iMac ! God ...

I have a 2008/2009 (not sure) 24" iMac that is getting super old and slow.
I've been using a work MBP for personal stuff in the meantime but wanted an iMac update prior to buying a new computer.

It was nice hearing of the update today, though I was hoping for something nicer...then again $$$ would have also occurred. I guess in my instance ANYTHING is better than my current iMac but reading everyone's complaints has me a bit worried. uggh.

UPDATED: BTW, as far as an update to the outer design...I don't really care. I like the current look and not sure what NEEDS changing. I understand some cannot fathom the 'large' bezels but to me, it doesn't much matter.I can understand on a mobile device or laptop where you want the largest possible screen to physical size due to mobility but on an iMac, doesn't much bother me.

The only thing that has really changed is price. Not for the better :(

:apple: Is in not only in need of a hardware refresh, they definitely need a management refresh too.

In other words, we need to resurrect Jobs.

Default spinning disk. 6 year old display tech. 2 year old GPU/CPU tech.

The fully optioned $3500 model is what the $1800 model should be.

As a certified Apple fanboy, this is pretty disgraceful. Even sadder is the fact that I'm going to buy one, and have to procure additional outboard gear (Storage, GPU) to bring the system in line with the performance of its competitors and my needs.

7 years ago, I would have never thought that I would be considering an HP Z-Series workstation hackintosh to replace my late-2012 iMac.

When do these usually appear on Best Buy/Costco's web site..I have about 200 bucks to spend at best buy so will probably be ordering it there and buying applecare. Its a shame they did not upgrade the screen size to 31.6 I guess there is no chance they will do that in June?

I mean, if you really want to be pedantic, the design hasn't REALLY changed since the iMac G5 came out. It's changed materials, gotten bigger screens, and gotten thinner, but it's still the same basic screen with a chin on a foot design it's been since 2004. I miss the old iMac G4 design... that was real innovation, and it would work amazingly well given how small components are now.

Yes it was. And Microsoft managed to pull a modern G4 flowerpot design better than Apple itself with the Surface Studio. Apple has grown used to rest on its laurels far too much since Steve passed.

Are these models user-upgradable as far as RAM and SSD?

Not sure on the RAM. It's likely it will be on the 27", and with significantly more trouble on the 21.5", since they're likely to be similar to the 2017 model internally. The service docs aren't available yet, no idea how soon I can confirm for sure.

Yes on the SSD, with caveats. They're shipping them with hard drives available, which means you'll be able to add a SATA SSD for sure. The SSD slot on the logic board will likely still be nonstandard, so probably no on a NVMe SSD. And of course you'll almost certainly still have to cut the VHB strips to get to the drive and install new VHB when you're done. And don't drop the screen, warranty won't cover it if you screw up, though of course if you do it correctly and something else dies later Magnuson-Moss means Apple cannot legally void your warranty on the rest of the machine. So it's an 'advanced user' sort of upgrade.

Tim isn’t bad tbh, he is a fantastic business man, but not an artist like Steve, the fact of the Steve’s pass won’t change, we just got to move on, however, the company has shifting their focus on the mobile device and wearable while it comes with most of the profits, which is totally understandable and good, but it seems like  has forgotten that they born with computer innovation, look what they have done to the professional market since 2012 Mac Pro, Jesse...

You are missing a lot.
Its not about foot print - as iMac Pro showed - its how its designed inside. The iMac is super load with i7 etc. because the current thermals can't keep up. iMac Pro solved it.
Now, as for redesign, it has to happen for obvious reason (you really don't need me to tell you because I believe you know if you don't live in denial). The most logical way would be to stretch the screen to 31.6 as rumored. We would get bigger screen, smaller bezels and same chassis. The Thermals would be from iMac Pro and overall it would be win win for everyone. Bigger screen, better design (utility vs waste space), better thermals etc.

Or, would you rather stare at wasted space (bezels) than more screen space?

Redesign needs to happen - its natural progression. Simple as that.
Which is rumored to be 6K. Which is many more pixels than 5K. So either it will be more laggy, or they’ll put in a better GPU.
So it will be a more costy GPU, and a screen that is MUCH more costy. All this because some people don’t like the chin of the current model. Given that the 21” still sells well, I’m not sure Apple thinks the 27 is too small.

Yay iMac upgrade, but hold on lemme find something to tear apart and complain for the sake of complaining.

I’m glad they updated it, but spinners in all of the standard configurations is pure madness.

I’ll be picking up a Mac Mini instead, which is probably the better choice for my needs anyway. My Mac and Gaming PC can use the same monitor which makes me happy.

Tim would be too embarrassed to launch AirPower (again) on stage. I expect it to be launched in a press release tomorrow along with the iPod and AirPods but it'll probably be demonstrated on stage or make an appearance during a demo of the TV or News services.

Fair point, and if airpower hasn't changed in functionality, sure, but if there are new features, I could see a quick onstage presentation.

That iMac is as ugly as the last model! I think Apple want to reveal the Mac Pro with its beautiful new ultrawide monitor before allowing the technology to filter down to more consumer models.

But come on, over a year wait for a spec bump! No T2 chip and you have to buy the most expensive model to get an 8GB graphics card! I'm glad I bought a max processor Mac Mini, when I'm ready I will buy an eGPU of my choice.

Ok, for the misinformation here.
5K iMac was released in 2014 and was fine.
Now, are you really telling me that you believe that 5 years later we can't drive 6K with the current tech? Please, tell me that you were joking :)

Echoing many others about the HDD. I guess Apple kept it in to achieve the entry level price point. But a premium computer (and Apple is premium) should not have a HDD in 2019.

A fusion drive yes. Even 128 GB is fine for most people.

I guess also this will be the last update until the A SoC IMac - hopefully with a redesign.

So on the mid range 27", an upgrade from a 1TB Fusion to a 1TB SSD is only Seven.Hundred.Dollars? I don't care what you like or dislike about this machine, but I know a great value when I see it! /s/smh

Nice updates, really are, but it just seems really dull to me because the case design is now 7 years old!!!!!!

I’m more interested in the Surface Book 2 13” having seen one, hardware wise.

In fact I put that plus the new iPad Pros as the current design favourites of the computer world. The iMac just looks tired now.

This event will be totally services dominated then, it better deliver something interesting?

I mean we’ve had no design changes to the MacBook Air, Pro, MacBook, iMac, iMac Pro, Mac Mini, iPad Mini.
Authentically they are the exact same as from several years ago.

The only we presume new design coming is the new Mac Pro.

Still shouldn’t complain as at least they’ve updated the things.

I'd be curious to see how hot they get. The 9th gen K level chips are 95W chips while the previous model's 7th gen K chips were 91W. Now Intel is actually using solder instead of thermal compound on these, so they might run cooler. But unless Apple modified the fan curve, it's the same cooling that was in the 2017 iMac.

I may stick with the 65W chips just for stability and longevity of the system. At least it's 6 core and an 8th gen chip now.

Google laggy 5K iMac or laggy retina MacBook Pro and you’ll find tons of posts and YouTube videos. No, I don’t consider the first version(s) of 5K iMac and retina MacBook Pro to be fine.
More pixels need more horse power.
