Perhaps you should buy some glasses so you can stop sitting 9 inches away from your desktop computers. For those of us that sit up straight in our chairs the iMac screens look amazing.

The bottom line is, while an eventual retina-iMac will look great, if that's your criteria you're going to be computer-less for at least 2 or 3 more years. Is that really the best way to live your life?

well said.... unless your smack up against the damn screen, wth do you need a retina display for on a display that size??? People never cease to amaze me that they can't seem to understand how these things works.

Quite remarkable that there is still no keyboard redesign, even not with this iMac update. We have the iMac and the mac mini without disk tray and there is still that useless button on the keyboard to eject a disk...

well it's not a 128mb ssd, it's a 128gb ssd, and that in itself is already probably aorund $80-$100. add in the appletax and there you go
MisType - of course i meant GB.. look, apple removed gpu, prices of ssd fell down since last refresh... and SSD should be standard in premium computers.. in my eyes, any computer being sold in 2013 without any form of ssd (fussion, all sad) is outdated, for 1300 bucks? come on

Dare I ask…

Will we ever see iMac with six core i7?

I know heat is an issue, but I'd much rather see Apple design for performance than for looks.

I guess the eject still works when you get an Apple DVD burner.

Not sure if the KB needs a redesign but a full function wireless one would be nice.

With any mac that has user accessible memory, in most cases I would never buy extra ram from Apple. They're charging $200 for 8 extra gigs, you could add 16 gigs for around $130 if you get it from a third party and pop it in yourself.

Thanks for the info, and others have mentioned this as well. I just get a little click happy when I see that I can get it discounted. For me the extra 8 gigs is 188.00.

Would you guys get the upper end 21" iMac that was just released for $1579 (student discount), or a refurbished 27" for $1599? Both have 1TB Fusion drives? Wondering what to do. $20 difference for a 27" but it's not the updated specs.

The 27" refurb for $1599 does not have the Fusion drive. It is the standard configuration that sold for $1999 new (1 TB hard drive).

Yeah, and the jump to HD nearly tripled the resolution of TV displays. I'm not gonna say Retina screens aren't impressive, but from a purely technical standpoint, it's all relative.
And HD-TVs were a tremendous step forward, immediately rendering all SD-TVs worthless in resale value. Almost everybody bought a new TV because of HD. I didn't, I went with a 27-inch iMac instead, in part because of the higher than HD resolution.

Most new TV technologies like 3D and Smart do nothing to boost sales, but HD did and 4K will do it again. The only problem with 4K is the missing content, but in an iMac the GPU is creating 4K content all the time and streaming is a better way to deliver content than TV channels.

So we might finally see the dead of the TV, assimilated by another Apple product. In the end everything will be a computer and all the devices we had as kids will be merely some apps. Its inevitable. Resistance is futile.

Nope, I see one with the Fusion drive for that price.

Ah, I see it now. There are two configurations for $1599.

One was what I mentioned (the higher-end 27" standard configuration).

The other is a BTO lower-end 27" with the 1 GB Fusion drive.

Differences between the two would be 2.9 GHz i5 CPU / 1 TB Fusion Drive / NVIDIA 660M and 3.2 GHz i5 CPU / 1 TB hard drive / NVIDIA 675MX.

Both configurations originally sold for $1999.

Right, I am looking at the "lower-end" BTO model. Would you get this refurb over the higher end 21" that was just released today? Trying to decide.

I'd go with the 27" personally.

If you could in ANY way swing the extra cost, I'd very seriously consider the $1999 27" refurb. It has the i7 CPU, 1 TB Fusion Drive, and the 680MX GPU. That's a pretty killer machine right there.

I really wish I could, but it's down the these 2 models in this price range ($1600). I'm thinking the 27" as well. At least I can upgrade the RAM to 16GB later as well on the 27.

Precisely. The user-upgradable RAM in the 27" makes much more sense long-term. And that huge display is absolutely gorgeous.

I'd highly recommend the extra $119 for the 3-year AppleCare (education discount). It's 100% worth it.

Have you had any experience with refurb iMacs? Do they look just as if they were new? I'm just wondering if I can expect a ding on scratch on the display or base? I'm hoping they look brand new.

Only once, it was in brand-new condition. But a sample size of 1 is of course not conclusive.

From what I've read, most people have had excellent luck with refurbs, Apple's quality standards tend to make it a safe bet.

This is just a spec bump. The 780 is an improvement over the 680MX and it uses less power too. It's possible they have overclocked it, as well.

I'm eyeing the 27 inch w/ GTX 780M. The 775M isn't good enough at all for 1440p imo.

The GTX 780M and 770M both support higher-than 2560x1440 resolutions, so I believe the 775M can support that also.

No, because anything over quad-core will be reserved as a USP for the Mac Pro.

Seems like that should be less and less necessary as we have 8/10/12 core mac pros. Although I suppose the clock speed on those goes down. I think we'll definitely see six core iMac and beyond, it's not a question of if but when. But it would be nice to see sooner rather than later.

Of course it can support it. I think he was referring to gaming, where the 775M might not be adequate for some.

That's my dilemma -- I just ordered the older 27" with the 680MX GPU upgrade ($1849 @ B&H, no tax, free shipping). But I'm considering canceling that and buying a new 27" with the 775M using the education discount ($1899 + tax, in-stock at my local store).

I'm just not sure how the 775M compares with the 680MX. I know it is not quite as fast, but the faster CPU in the updated iMac might balance it out. I'm not a heavy gamer but gaming is fairly important for me.
