Correction: 4.8 brought video. There is nothing _new_ in iTunes 6. Repeat after me: There is nothing NEW in iTunes 6.

iTunes 6 changes from iTunes 5:
- support for 5G iPod
- fixed full screen bug

Uhm, that's it.
Before iTunes 6 there wasn't a place to access downloaded videos. Now you can go to the video section of your library (located right under "Podcasts").
It also lets you preview and download music.

Aren't those changes?

BTW - you contradict yourself...
You say "There is nothing NEW in iTunes 6."
and then you say "iTunes 6 changes from iTunes 5:"

Changes does not mean NEW. Is support for a new iPod a new feature? Nope, that's an update. Is a bug-fix a new feature? No, that's just that: a bug-fix.

And no, updates to the iTunes Music Store is not a new feature. That's a new feature of the iTMS. You can still access those features with older versions of iTunes. You need QT 7.0.3 to view videos however.

Oh, and the fact that no videos are available to international users kind of negates that "new feature" for non US-users (and non Canada-users for music videos only).

Anyone else having a problem where they lose their wireless access after installing 6.0.1?

Mum called to say that she'd downloaded it and couldn't get online. Mine was downloading at this point and the same thing happened. Quitting Safari and restarting brought it all back but was a little odd...

actually yes, now that you mention it..

i was wondering what happened all of a sudden..

i installed the update and now i cant make a cd with itunes. HELP
it is a gigabit ethernet dual 450 g4 with a pioneer superdrive. it burned cd and dvd before now it wont!

I upgraded to 6.0.1 last night. Now, iTunes opens without me wanting it open. I've quit the program at least 5 times since last night. It stays closed for a minute or so, and then it opens up again. Any ideas what's causing this?

I noticed that Software Update is doing something a bit different. After iTunes update download was complete and installed, it automatically checked for more updates before ending. I don't recall it doing that before.

And I wonder why Apple finds it necessary to make you Agree to legal terms before downloading the update, and then you have to do it again when you first start the updated program. Seemed redundant and a tad annoying.

iTunes 6.0.1 is installed and appears to be working fine so far.

Yes, SU has always done this. It does it because some updates require earlier updates to be installed. As for the licensing, it does this because the software is being download and then immediately installed on your machine.

Updates are good. At least it will still work for me since I'm still using 10.3.9.

Precedent? iLife '04 released Jan '04, iLife '05 released Jan '05. Plus, they have got to have something to release at MacWorld.

I'd add iWork '06 to the list (remember, we've seen lots of new slide (and objects?) transitions from Steve's Keynote presentations).

I thought this myself. It wouldn't surprise me at all. I'm a software programmer and we have had competitors not only breeze through major version numbers but skip some entirely to try to catch up with our major version number.

When uninformed consumers are comparing two competing software packages it is not uncommon for them to believe that the package with the higher major version number is more refined or better somehow.

You mean like how Microsoft's new console is named "Xbox 360", to catch up to Sony's Playstation 3? :D

In any case, it's Nintendo Revolution for me (Metroid Prime with a real controller, yeah - screw gamepads and their stupid analog sticks).

iTunes rules - Yahoo! just increased music prices

Yahoo! just increased its price for monthly music downloads, charging more for downloading to MP3 players.

Read their explanation for the price increase -- it seems that Yahoo!'s music service isn't making enough $$$:

We want to let you know about an upcoming change to the Yahoo! Music Unlimited service regarding the transfer of subscription music to compatible portable music players. If you do not transfer subscription music to a portable device or do not plan to do so in the near future, this change does not affect you.

Currently, the Yahoo! Music Engine software lets you transfer two types of music to compatible portable music players: (1) subscription music, which is available to you for as long as you remain an active Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscriber, and (2) music you've purchased, including both downloaded music you've bought from Yahoo! and music you've ripped from CDs you own.

On November 1, 2005, the cost of transferring and playing subscription music on a portable digital music player will increase from $4.99 to $9.99 per month for an annual subscription ($119.88 billed annually) and from $6.99 to $11.99 per month for a monthly subscription. Despite this increase, Yahoo! Music Unlimited will continue to offer the lowest price anywhere for transferring subscription music to a portable player.

If you transfer Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscription music to a portable music player, or you plan to do so in the future, you may upgrade to an annual subscription by October 31, 2005 and lock in the current low price of $59.88 for one more year.

If you do not (and have not) transferred subscription music to a portable device, your subscription will continue to renew at the current monthly rate of $6.99 for the base package of Yahoo! Music Unlimited. All features will remain the same except for subscription music portability.

I hope this takes care of the Audio Video sync problems I am having

Indeed, I hope so too! I've been having audio only skipping too, as well as video / audio out of sync + stuttering - this problem also appears in QuickTime PRO too. In fact, because of that, was expecting a QT update, we'll see I guess...

Itunes99 will support connecting to the human brain, there is some storage capacity!

I suppose at that point we might come full-circle and music production from artist to auditory lobe of my brain will be an entirely analog process without any digital conversion at all. Bring on Apple SuperLossless!

That is remarkable! A subscriber who thought he/she was getting a deal for the past year is about to realize that that money was effectively poured down the drain. The money I've used to purchase music over the past year bought music that my great-great-great-great-grandkids will be able to listen to at absolutely no expense to them. w00t!

Big announcement: My computer is entirely, 100%, totally DRM free as of yesterday. It's a great feeling. Even better than completely paying off a credit card. I am free to do whatever I want with whatever I have. Now, to the next goal: having all music over 192kbps VBR.

well, I STILL cant buy songs from iTms- "Unknown error" cannot connect to network -9813. THis for the past 4 days.

I have 10.42, QT 7.03 and iTunes 6.01 i have firewall set to allow itunes, so I give up.

Maybe 10.43 will help grrrrrr

radio-related bugs

I've experienced several bugs related to the radio:

*some stations won't play
*attempting to play some stations will crash itunes

I send in the bug reports religiously.

I'm running the latest build of 10.3.9.

Make sure that when you run software update, the user you're doing it as is an administrator. Try the permissions repair bit (again from the admin user) in Disk Utility if it persists.

I'm not in the least bit surprised. When their competition is charging $15/mo for a service, I wouldn't expect them to be able to stay in business charging 1/2-1/3 of that price.

They probably planned this from the beginning - get you to subscribe with a lowball price, then charge more once you're nice and hooked.

Just like a drug dealer.

Who cares about all this? It isn't like this is as important as knowing why there still is not G5 Powerbook!

I will have you know only hard-drug dealers do that especially in the Bay Area. Where pot is so easy to get (and very especially berkley where the law puts people who j-walk above people who smoke pot in terms of law breaking) however, if you were referring to hard-drug's than you sir are correct. (cause drug dealers love money)

As for this new update for iTunes... I don't care about the fact that this came out so soon, think about it this way at least they caught the bugs sooner rather than later. however, apple should have waited a few months before releasing iTunes 5 (to get the video section in there) and just done extra extensive bug testing. When Apple releases a new major version of something you expect it to have near-earth shattering differences. (with the exception of mac os X1 which will have galaxy-shattering differences) thats probbably peoples whole gripe with 5 and 6... also why didn't apple change the iCon? they changed it in every previous update 1 looked different than 2 and 2 looked different from 3 and 3 looks different from 4. but after 4 either apple got lazy or they couldn't think of a cool enough iCon.

a G5 powerbook will (if ever) be released at mac world. here is my evidence to suggest that.

1st macworld is a major media/consumer/prosumer/business etc... event.
2nd The low-power G5's have been made by IBM and should be available in large enough quantities by the end of the year and if IBM keeps on manufacturing them even after apple releases the G5 Powerbook than there should be enough to last till after the next revision cycle at which case there will be a PowerBook Intel Edition.
3rd Apple can use the time to perfect a new design for the G5 powerbook that would make it so heat isn't as big of an issue as it is for G5 powerbooks.
4th Apple can also use the time to get a better battery in the Powerbook .
5th but most importantly Steve Jobs needs to say one more thing at macworld and unless a new line is coming out I don't think Steve has anything to say to live up to the one more thing line.

The video section, while nice looking (and I'd like to see the same for browsing by albums) is essentially useless because it only plays one video at a time. No shuffle, no repeat. WTF?

From what I've seen iTunes 5 brought the more boxy interface re-design.

iTunes 6 has brought video purchasing and the Just for you beta, these may be server side in the main but they still need to be 'turned on' on the client side.
