I concur with those in the thread that don't like these icons. I'm really disliking the direction they took with these. They look just strange. They don't look as neat as the previous ones. I think the white background on these, except for Garageband, is what is really throwing me off from liking them. Thats my personal opinion though.

Did Apple pass their productivity suite back over to Claris? Because this reminds me an awful lot of ClarisWorks for some reason. And I hate to be "that guy," but I know Steve Jobs would absolutely loathe these icons and is probably storming the halls of Apple, belittling everyone as a poltergeist right about now.

When I update manually it seems to have downloaded and installed the latest software for iWork; however my icons in the Dock remain the same as before. Does anyone else see that? However in Launchpad there I see the new icons.

EDIT: Never mind - they change to the new ones when I open the application from the Dock.

p.s. - I HATE all the new icons. Apple should return to beautiful icons and skeuomorphism!

Did Apple fire all the graphic designers?

These icons look like they're from Word 98 clipart. Apart from just being ugly, with their exaggerated shadows and contours, they're too busy! A good icon doesn't need both a pen and a quote mark to signal that you can write!
I imagine that most of the people doing the grunt work at Apple are not aware of 98.

By no means I am a professional designer and I can tell the new Big Sur icons are bad, and I bet the designer of these is some big shot creative who ask a ton of money for his "designs" but the end result is terrible. Icon design in Big Sur is all over the place. Look at how beautiful and easy to understand these original OS X Jaguar icons. Are we moving forward or backwards?

One thing about icons is, you don't need to change them I don't understand why they do. Well at least they are better than the confusing mess of Google icons

I just don't understand why they didn't use the same icons, or slightly different versions, than the iOS icons for these apps. I thought they were aiming to merge the aesthetics of both OSes.
Agreed. That would be the logical thing to do. The iOS versions of the icons are in my opinion much nicer.

Must have. I don't think we can blame the interns for this. The interns would have created better designs.

I prefer the flat look over the fakey shadows and sheen. And cartoons rock. :)
Excellent! Windows is waiting for you. I'm so glad Apple doesn't tailor their OS based on how Macrumors members feel about them. People here tend to think if they don't like what Apple does then it's trash and everyone should feel the same. Nope. Sometimes I wonder if I'm on an Apple enthusiast site or an Apple hate site. Based not the constant daily hateful petty comments towards Apple probably the latter.

I really don’t like that white background. It also makes them look too similar. I won’t be upgrading to Big Sur for several reasons, and this is one.

New 10.4.1 GarageBand installer shows up on Catalina 10.15.7 but cannot be installed because it requires Big Sur. Someone didn't get it right within Apple. :D
Yeah, not a fan of that approach at all. Don't like being nudged to update to a new OS like that. If it doesn't run with Catalina don't show it...

They have a tendency to do this with the crappier OS's it seems. They did this with Lion (a rather controversial OS upgrade at the time). In order to get iCloud, you had to upgrade.

For those getting annoyed by the GarageBand update, this worked for me:
  1. Backup GarageBand.app (I use a SuperDuper clone)
  2. Remove GarageBand via Launchpad
  3. Copy back GarageBand.app
Use at your own risk though. I haven’t tested all variables and if something goes wrong you might lose access to GarageBand.

I'm all set. I changed my MacBook Pro's DNS from my ISP's to CloudFlare's — at least until it was done downloading.
I wish I would have found this out earlier. I just made this change and breezed right through the download and install. After a couple days of frustrations.

Easy fella. What about my comment seems hateful or made you think I believe Apple is trash? Just expressing a simple aesthetic preference. I've been using Apple OS since 1990, I so I've seen it all, including the shiny-sheen-ridden Aqua days.

Anybody know how I can install Garageband from scratch on a Catalina system? Didn't expect that Garageband would now *require* Big Sur. :-/
I've not tried this (don't use Garageband), and it's from memory (someone mentioned it in another thread, somewhere).

Try to download it from your Purchase history page (not the regular App Store page), there it should provide the right version...

I was Today at my brother in law’s . He is on Catalina and out of a sudden Garage Band update appeared
