MB/MPB updates in UK

Just talked to Apple Ireland's UK aftersales people, MB/MBP updates will be reflected on the UK store from MIDNIGHT tonight.

MBP changes:
2.6Ghz option on 15+17's
2.2, 2.4Ghz stay as base configs - no speed bump there on base build
200Gb 7200rpm drive optional
250gb 5400rpm drive optional

Seems that the MBP will have the 160GB 7200rpm drive as *base* because I was told this like the 4200RPM 200Gb drive is not going to be a purchasable option in... 10 hours time!

Right, I'm off to cancel my order!

I just called 1-800-myapple to ask about the pricing discrepancy between US and Canada.

I asked if I could order from the US store- he said no. I asked if he could explain the pricing discrepancy- he hummed and hawed and said nothing. I asked if I could talk to somebody who could explain it- he said no. I told him I'd hold off on my purchase.

Could all good Canadians on this forum do me a favour and call them up?

Thanks!

Yeah im soooooooooooooo dissapointed. Whatever happened to the aluminun casing..Grrrrrr:(

Maybe just a short term model till January? I hoped for a larger screen option too, to a 15" option and aluminum. It is totally differentiated from Pro line due to no VRAM so I feel it would never overlap or damage Pro sales.

Sure! I love calling people to b*tch at them!

Well Customs duty is free only for values $20 canadian or less.

Customs duty of Canada. Last checked it was around 5 to 15%.

oops made a mistake about UK duties. You have to consider that cost of living in UK is higher, but people get paid more in the UK.

In addition to custom fees and other costs, as someone else said, you cannot have Georgio Armani for the price of walmart products.

Just a quick question to you experts; following quote taken from the macbook specs page:

Memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 144MB. An additional 16MB is required when using an external display.

Does that mean you can regulate the memory of your videocard, so that it's more than 144? I myself plan to some work with OpenGL and I reckon I'd need a good videocard to start with.

Any ideas?

It says on apple.com...

667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300)

I was also going to post from the Manual that someone esle posted the link to but I cant find it. I'd assume we're looking @ 200-pin, so make sure thats the case before buying anything i'd say. I'll buy mine in PA tomorrow and ask at the time I guess. Then probably order from Newegg.com or wherever I can find cheapest...

anyone?

@king576:

Which problems do you have with java ? (besides the lack of jdk 1.6 :-D) ?

I can't speak for other countries, but for the UK, that's not strictly true. Import duty on computer stuff is zero. VAT is relatively high at 17.5%, but this doesn't explain the typical price differences.

However, compared to (say) Adobe, Apple are saints when it comes to UK pricing.
Hmmm. Remind me to post a picture of what Britain's "inexpensive universal health care" has done to my teeth. In this country, only the wealthiest get to avoid the choice between Macs and dentists. :D

Sorry to hear about your tooth. At least in UK people don't say "Somewhere in Texas, a villiage is missing its idiot." =p

But last time I was in UK, the costs of most things in UK are twice as much as the US (cheap lunch in UK is 5 pounds = 10 dollars, cheap dinner is 10 pounds = $20, and it's a tiny portion), however, people in UK make about twice as much (after currency exchange) as people in the US. So Apple products are actually less than the customary 100% price difference for most other goods and products.

yeah that link is 240-pin so it won't work.

Absolute rubbish- not everyone needs a DVD burner. Actually not everyone needs an internal dvd drive. Some would be happy if it was external. If it keeps the price down, I'm happy.

LOL... you're delusional.:rolleyes: I can't believe you would even attempt to defend Apple in this case. I can buy a PC laptop with a DVD burner for £289, if I want that feature on a Mac I have to spend £829 !!! Apple are just crippling the low end machines to make people spend more to get features that in late 2007 should be standard.

And what use is the much touted iLife suite? Can you explain how i'm going to burn the DVD I just made in iMovie with iDVD with my combodrive?

--YAWN--

(-_-) Zzzzzz Zzzzzz

Wake me up when there is a real update to the MacBook Pro, like a 2.8GHz standard on the 17" Model. This better not be the update that I have been waiting for. If it is then I will spending more time with my current model and waiting for a solid update in the Pro laptop line.
Looks like the MacBook saw the update I wanted it to see back in May. :p

If you're looking for RAM, always go with an A-brand. I've had Kingston in all my comps so far and they're brilliant. Even more interesting; Kingston has "special" Apple RAM which is actually tested on macs. That way you can't go wrong especially cause macs have a rep being picky with RAM.

I'm no genius in the graphics department.

Will this new chipset let me use iMovie and iDVD to make movies with my crappy non-HD digital camcorder with those little digital tapes and firewire hookup?

Will it play warcraft?

Will it allow me to use the crappy backdrop effects in PhotoBooth?

New SR or not, a mere 40Mhz increase, capability of 4Gb of ram and X3100. This doesn't pleases me at all as major improvements, but I'm not whining like some guys over here.

These small updates are welcome, but why don't some of you ask for 1x1Gb instead of 2x512Mb and better speaker quality?

That would be a lot better than this small update and I don't see anyone asking for it...

40 MHz and a faster front side bus. Maybe you should take a look at the benchmarks of the older 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro Vs. the newer 2.2 GHz one. :p

Speed

I have a 17" MBP and want to go down to a 13" for portability but dont wanna loose speed, im on a 2.33ghz C2D with 2GB now, so was hoping for a MB of that spec, not far off.

Will i notice it being slower if I got for a Black book with extra ram??

While the Mhz is slightly slower do not forget that this chip has a faster pipeline of 800Mhz...should be faster than what you have now.

The worse thing about the previous Macbook was the viewing angle of the screen. Has this been addressed?

There is custom duty for UK. See my other post above.
Indeed there is custom duty for the UK, which is in addition to the 17.5% VAT.

Customs duty varies depending on the item being imported. For computer hardware and software, it happens to be 0%. :)

Thank you for the good will message about my dental problems. Don't worry, I'm finally getting them fixed next month... in Germany. :D

even if im blatantly not gonna declare it...

If I was to pay the UK VAT, does that mean I wouldn't have to pay any Tax when buying a MB in the shop in PA (USA!)?
