even if im blatantly not gonna declare it...

If I was to pay the UK VAT, does that mean I wouldn't have to pay any Tax when buying a MB in the shop in PA (USA!)?

No. You pay sales tax (~8%) and then at customs the UK VAT.

I just called 1-800-myapple to ask about the pricing discrepancy between US and Canada.
...

Could all good Canadians on this forum do me a favour and call them up?

Thanks!

I will, this afternoon

For those outside of US and compare your prices to the US prices.

There is a price difference not because Apple likes to do it that way, it's because of higher import taxes from your government. Apple is based OUTSIDE your country, thus will pay a higher import tax than companies based IN your country.

So what you're saying is that all this "Free Trade" stuff is just smoke and mirrors then?

Was the super-quiet update done perhaps to not piss off people who bought new MacBooks with Leopard last week?

has anyone yet inquired about the macbook's availability in apple's retail stores yet?

i was going to get one soon. i guess i will just wait until spring or at least until they go with led screens. i also wish they would go with 1stick of 1gb ram. this 2 512 stuff is garbage. i have a 1gb stick waiting to go in one if i ever buy it.

So this leaves me with a question: will the old mac memory still be usable in this one? I mean they got a new chipset so I assume a new motherboard is in there. What about the memory? Does it stay the same?

So close!
A great update overall, but I'm still going to hold off until LED back lighting is implemented. You can't ignore the performance benefit (doesn't diminish like CCFL, brighter, better colour reproduction).

why are the first 30-40 comments so mind numbingly useless?!

every comment is either:

- there not being aluminum case mods
- yawn for the boring update
- some stupid shout for joy by some idiot that's been holding out for the *next* update cycle before he buys.

how about some real comments, how about what the performance comparison is between x3100 and gma 950?! how about battery performance difference? how about resolutions, x264 native decoders, etc?

lol... couldnt agree more! :)
i sold my iMac G5 (iSight) exatly 4months ago (before they became totally worthless thanks to new Aluminium iMacs) and have been waiting for leopard and macbook update. now that its finally here, just gotta wait for UK stores to get updated so i can buy!:D
and those of you who think Apple will release a completely redesigned macbook in jan 08... all i can say is this: look at the macrumors buyers guide and and you'll see the macbook (previously ibook) ALWAYS gets updated after AT LEAST (approximately) 6months!!!

Same memory will work. Till intel changes memory type.

Just saw the update. Combo drive? No bigger HDD? F*CK YOU APPLE GO TO HELL!! That's it, I'm not taking this ****, I'm going Dell.

This is just unacceptable. Un- ****ing -believable.

Too bad too many people here still didn't get this simple fact : Apple is an AMERICAN DESIGNER. That means, Apple can use all the crappy hardware material in the world as long as it presents that crap under a beautiful hood.

If you go Apple, and especially Macbooks (i'm not talking Mac Pros here...), don't look for performance, look for glamour and stability.

Dude, what IS your problem?.. go Dell please, we don't need you here.

Well Customs duty is free only for values $20 canadian or less.

Customs duty of Canada. Last checked it was around 5 to 15%.
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/courier/postal/ind_duty_free-e.html

I think that the website you looked at is for individual consumers, not large companies that import large amounts of products. But anyway....

OK.... so let's go with your numbers and say that duty is 15% (the highest of the range you provided) 15% of, let's say $1233 CAD ($1299 USD) is still less than the $200-300 difference. And let's not forget that the US Dollar is weaker than the Canadian Dollar, it's not at parity anymore.

That still doesn't explain the Leopard pricing parity of $129 CAD and USD. Why were they able to do it with that product? I guess they have different pricing policies depending on the item? My feeble Canadian brain is confused

Compare to Dell at the same price, and then assess your comments. And compare to Sony at the same price as well.

MBP is a MUCH better deal now

Ok so let's compare the Blackbook with the Macbook Pro now, and let's use education prices for reference:

The Macbook pro may be $400 more ($1399 versus $1799), but look at EVERYTHING you get with it over the Blackbook:

2gb of ram versus that awful 2 512mb configuration
> 2" more worth of screen realty, as well as a higher resolution
8600gt versus the X3100...8600gt still pwns that thing
LED screen...why the hell didnt the Macbook get this?
Aluminum body, backlit keys, louder speakers.

oh yea and keep in mind if you wait until the Macbook Pro gets an update, then it'll be WAY better for $400 more...

Just one question before I buy my first Macbook

Will this new chipset let me use iMovie and iDVD to make movies with my crappy non-HD digital camcorder with those little digital tapes and firewire hookup?

yes, that is something I really would like to know too! I've been waiting for months now for this macbook upgrade to buy my first Mac.

The things I will be doing with my macbook:
1. surfing, mailing, word processing,.. (daily use)
2. java development (eclipse)
3. playing some old games (with scummvm for instance... reliving the good old days ;))
4. and finally do a little bit video-editing by witch I mean creating some movies I made during our trips the last few years. (maybe 1 or 2 times a year)

I know that for 1,2 and 3 there won't be any problem (except maybe the lack of java 1.6 for the moment in leopard..damn I hope they do something about that fast!)
But untill now point 4 has always been my major reason for doubt between the a MB or a MBP.
What do you guys think? Is this MB enough for my needs or would you rather advise a MBP?

thanks a lot! :)

These small updates are welcome, but why don't some of you ask for 1x1Gb instead of 2x512Mb and better speaker quality?

That would be a lot better than this small update and I don't see anyone asking for it...

That's because both the MacBook and Mac mini NEED matched pair memory in order to provide the best performance (because of the integrated graphics).

Honestly though, it's not just Dell. It's very hard to find Combo drives in consumer oriented laptops these days from any manufacturer. Even a budget $450 Walmart laptop has a DVD burner. Burning DVDs is definitely not a premium feature.

The bottom end MacBook is no longer a viable product, IMHO. Its produced so Apple can say "Starting from $1099..." to get people into the store. The first usable MacBook is the mid-range superdrive. Really expected better from Apple. This is what comes of a computer company that needs to maintain 30%+ margins.
