ughhhhhhhhhh I ordered the of the "old" one's Tuesday Night. - is it worth sending it back for a "new" one. And if it's a stock model, Could I bring to the store with a packing slip for an even exchange?

I would definitely bring it back... you never opened it so no 10% restocking fee. The GMA950 is outdated!

I've been lurking around here for the last week or so waiting for the perfect time to order my Macbook and it looks like it is finally here. But now with my first post, I have to ask a noobish question.

How long will it take for OWC or Crucial to update their sites to accommodate the 4GB of RAM the Macbook can now handle?

I plan on ordering the mid-level MB with only 1 GB of RAM and then paying for and doing the 3rd party RAM upgrades myself.

Thanks for the help!

As of right now, it looks like Apple hasn't changed their pricing in the Canada Store to reflect the strong Canadian Dollar. I call B.S. on that one.

Here is what I mean:

U.S. Store Prices for the three new MacBooks:
US Prices............ In Canadian Dollars after conversion:
$1099 USD............ $1039.22 CAD
$1299 USD............ $1228.34 CAD
$1499 USD............ $1417.46 CAD

Canadian Store Prices:
$1249
$1449
$1649

And let's not forget sales tax- in Canada, we're talking 14% tax on top of those high Canadian prices. If I take a quick drive down to Buffalo, NY, I can pay the U.S. price and only approximately 8% sales tax. Even if I have to declare the MacBook at the border, the duty fees I would have to pay would not come close to the more than $200 difference (over $320 difference including taxes). Oh, the cost of gas would only be around $50-60 to drive there and back, so it's still a big savings.

When Leopard was released, Apple priced it competitively in Canada to the US price, at $129 CAD. I expected them to do the same with the MacBook, considering our dollar is stronger than the U.S. and is still going up. I think that they've dropped the ball here. The price differences between products in Canada vs. the U.S. is a big story right now in Canada, and it's only a matter of time before this story appears on the news.

Guess where I'll be driving in the next couple of weeks? At least I'll be able to eat at The Cheesecake Factory.....

Amen brotha! If it weren't for the fact that my ThinkPad T-40 (running OS X.. Don't give me any fanboy crap about it) is still alive in kicking, I would be making a trip to Michigan to get one too.

Well yes, yes it is.

I don't like having pay to pay a premium for dated hardware just because it has an apple logo on it. That's called getting "ripped off"

The hardware is the same or better, both in build quality and components. Apart from the Combo-drive issue, of course.

The software is significantly better.

I'll pay more and save myself the frustration and actually use the machine - and it will last longer than the cheap PC option. The equivalent-cost PC option still has the frustration aspect even if the build quality is decent. Buy cheap, Buy twice.

For those outside of US and compare your prices to the US prices.

There is a price difference not because Apple likes to do it that way, it's because of higher import taxes from your government. Apple is based OUTSIDE your country, thus will pay a higher import tax than companies based IN your country.
I can't speak for other countries, but for the UK, that's not strictly true. Import duty on computer stuff is zero. VAT is relatively high at 17.5%, but this doesn't explain the typical price differences.

However, compared to (say) Adobe, Apple are saints when it comes to UK pricing.
(Sidetrack: you have to consider citizens of most countries do get better services than the USA, such as inexpensive universal health care. In addition, be thankful you don't have a president who is not very bright, but I digress).
Hmmm. Remind me to post a picture of what Britain's "inexpensive universal health care" has done to my teeth. In this country, only the wealthiest get to avoid the choice between Macs and dentists. :D

Education discount knocks $100 off the price of all 3 MB models.

I was comparing edu to older refurbished MB's like a week ago and edu was still cheaper.

Yep, I knew about the $100 off, but since I'm a fairly new Mac person, I didn't know how deep the discounts were traditionally when a product line was updated. I also don't know how many diehard Mac fans there are in my area so I didn't know if people would be lined up at CompUSA to buy the models with the old specs and since I'm over an hour away, thought I'd get going if it would be a significant savings.

Except the battery on the dell only lasts 50% of the duration of the MacBook (they try to sell you a battery with capacity comparable to the MacBook for more $$$), and the Dell is heavier, has LOUD fans, frequently does not go to sleep / hibernate when the lid is closed.
The battery life and weight are the same according to the tech specs from Apple and Dell. Fan noise and usability will clearly be better on the MacBook. Is it worth a 8% premium for that?? I'd say yes. :)

Well yes, yes it is.

I don't like having pay to pay a premium for dated hardware just because it has an apple logo on it. That's called getting "ripped off"

I have no idea why people keep saying Apples are over priced and you can get PCs that are cheaper and better. That just isn’t true.

If you look at Dells there is only 1 computer comparable to the Macbook; the XPS M1330.

Take the base model, add a 2.2GHz processor, Bluetooth, Wireless N card, and a 56 W/hr battery and you’ll be paying $1449. That is $150 more that a $1299 MacBook which comes with Leopard and iLife 08.

The Dell does give you an option to upgrade to a 128MB NVIDIA card for $100 which is really nice and 2 other color options for $25 each. But now you are looking at a computer getting close to $1600. And people are complaining about Apples pricing.

The $600 15" laptops are crap. And even when you tried to equip it like a MacBook, you end up paying $1113 for something with junk software, horrible materials and design, that bigger and weighs more.

The $1299 MacBook is an amazing value for what you are getting. And if you don't need all that it has, Apple was good enough to provide a cheaper option. And too all the people who what MacBook Pros at MacBook prices, I'm not sure that is very reasonable.

Good maybe I will get one.<p>

I want a similar setup to you, a little macbook that is portable enough to take everywhere, an ACD to use when at home.

Also an unlocked iPhone to use on Orange UK

Go for it! It's a great setup :D

Does anyone else think that this is sneaky sneaky because of a bigger update at MWSF08?

Couldn't help but highlight this near-oxymoron. And I don't mean you're a moron.

Actually, that would be a contradiction. An oxymoron requires contradictory terms to be combined, e.g. awfully good, deafening silence, factual newspaper.

Ok first off to all the whiners:

I'm sorry guys, the macbook is no graphical beast and never will be. Although some ppl think this laptop can't handle graphical apps I beg to differ. Photoshop and flash do require some graphical power (especially flash) and it handles those programs fine. Yes they are a little bit pricey but it's not all about the hardware. OSX is a major selling point of these laptops. If you don't like it: leave it. Get a macbook pro for your gaming needs if you like.

Second: this update is more then enough for me. Santa Rosa chipset, new graphics chipset (which imo is a big improvement, twice the speed of the old one) and a light mhz bump is more then enough to keep me happy.

As for the aluminium: I couldn't care less about this. I love the old apple style (black and white with plexiglass) and I personally don't even want a grey laptop. No white/black and proper wifi reception is fine with me and if they DO decide to change the looks and use aluminium they sould sort out the wifi issues first imo.

And finally I would like to add: UPDATE THE FRIGGIN' STORES WORLDWIDE! I thank you for your attention.

Dude, you shouldn't be complaining. look at the european prices.. Here is the prices from the swedish store:

2.0ghz: 9.995kr = $1557
2.16ghz 11.995kr = $1869
2.16ghz 13.995 = $2180

So our cheapest model is more expensive than the blackbook
Nah... macs aro on sale here in Brasil:
mbp 15" = US $ 4605,00
mb black = US$ 3000,00
mb (lower config) = about US$ 2300,00
mac pro = US$ 5110,00

So, enjoy your new macs... ;-)

Do you think compusa will already have them marked down?

That's what I meant. I said 'near' oxymoron. Contradiction would have been better. How awfully good of you to point this out. :)

lol I'm with you 100%. I hear about denting issues with the aluminum. But I couldn't care less about the case. I'd rather have the SR Bump.

Mac mini update probably soon

Shouldn't be long, I've just received my Mac mini Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz with GMA950 yesterday... so Mac mini update in a week at most?

Yeah, but those prices are with 25 % VAT included

Without taxes, it is a 150 $ difference. Still a lot, but we may not forget that the Euro, £, SEK, ... are at their highest level ever compared to the $!

This is one of the first times I have seen this phrase correctly used on these forums...

I do still want a MBP... but by the time I can get one, something better will be out... just like when I wanted to get a 12" PowerBook.
