i wasn't going to post this because i was sure it would have came up. but i went through 6 pages and no one talked about how close this was to the low end macbook pro. I essentially the hight end macbook and low end pro are the same price. with an insane price gap.

There's a contradiction here. Either you say that a Mac is a Mac, and you can't beat the OS, so there's no comparison possible. Or you compare the Mac hardware to the Pc hardware, same price. And then, Mac falls way behind. Face the facts ! I'm not saying Pcs are better, I do both. I'm just realistic that's all, and that's what most Apple fan seem to lack.

Dude, compare the hardware at the same price. Do your homework. Then go away PC troll.

Apple Updates MacBooks to Santa Rosa, GMA X3100

Go the Apple Store. Go to complete specs.

You'll see that the 2 upgraded MacBooks now come with a "8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)"

That's a large improvement over the old MacBooks.

I like the bump-up in Ram to 4GB. By the way, I never buy Apple's memory
upgrades. Certified Apple RAM is available, at a number of memory websites, and cost a fraction of Apple's price.

Regarding the HDD size. I do not upgrade this item with Apple either. Many websites will sell you a 200GB or 250GB HDD upgrade, at a great price.

The only item I wish were included on the new MacBook is an 800 Firewire port.

Having said that I'll wait until MacWorld 2008, to see what the new MacBook Pro will contain.

MultiMedia's prediction of a new MacBook Pro design at the January show is right on. In my opinion. :)

That's because both the MacBook and Mac mini NEED matched pair memory in order to provide the best performance (because of the integrated graphics).

Other WOrld computing was claiming that the performance hit wasn't that great.

But...YMMV.

Just saw the update. Combo drive? No bigger HDD? F*CK YOU APPLE GO TO HELL!! That's it, I'm not taking this ****, I'm going Dell.

This is just unacceptable. Un- f*cking -believable.

You're not comparing apples to apples. Macs and Dell might use the same 120gb SATA drive and DVD drive, but most similarities end after you compare those common components. i.e. design, quality, customer service, and of course two different OS.

Why does Sony LCD cost 2x more than a Westinghouse? And I'm sure you can get a souped up Honda Accord V6 to be faster than a BMW for 10 grand less. Why? Because different companies have different standards.

If you aren't happy, go get your Dell. They do offer better value for what you 'get'. But to most of us the Mac user experience is well worth it.

Not being a smart-alek at all, but how do you come to this conclusion? I can't see an equality between the top end MacBook and the low end MacBook Pro?

Just the differences in case materials, graphics card, FW 800, External 30" Monitor's, ect...

If you have MacBook, you can do it yourself.

If you have MBP, you can have the drive upgraded by apple certified technicians without voiding warranty.

If you are in nova, I know apple certified technicians.

There is nothing easier than upgrading the harddisk on a MacBook. Buy a 250GB SATA harddisk (make sure it is 9mm high, not 12mm) and a USB SATA case. Move the old harddisk into the SATA case, put the new one in the MacBook, boot from the USB disk, start Disk Utility and copy the old disk over to the new one, reboot, done. Costs about £105, plus you end up with a spare external disk. And nothing in this process voids your warranty.

You guys take this stuff way to serious!:D

Anyway, not enough of a change to make me upgrade my macbook I bought in June yet. I don't understand Santa Rosa, GMA 1500 chip sets, LED back light screens, or most anything you guys are saying! I just does not interest me. My dad always told me electronics are obsolete as soon as you've paid and walked out the door with them.

I like my MB and thank you all for answering many of my questions! Plastic case is just fine for me and truthfully the young ladies all gather round the white book wanting to know just what it is:) I bought it to play on the internet, look at porn (as someone else said:cool:) Paper work for school, blah, blah, you know the rest.

I do have a question though, just how much memory will my bought in June MB hold? Will it hold 4G? Should I stick with 2G
Thanks!

Double layer burner

Did the last macbooks have a double layer dvd burner? If not, i consider this a pretty nice upgrade

For that kind of usage? Not a problem--sounds like simple iMovie work. It won't be as slick or as responsive as a Mac Pro, but I've created 3-5 minute teasers and videos using ibooks in the past. I doubt you'll have that much problems.

ok cool :) thanks for the answer...

ofcourse I'm not talking about 3-5 minute teasers in my case...more something like 1h and more movies.. do you think the MB can handle creating movies like that with iMovie? Ofcourse it's normal that it won't be at the speed of the MBP because of the GPU difference, but for something that I'll do 1 or 2 times a year that doesn't really matter! I just want be to sure that I can create my travelling movies on DVD and do some basic cut and pasting jobs on these large movie files on this MB without any problem..

all opinions are welcome!

If I'm sure about this.. well then I guess I made my decision :D

thanks again! :)

Let's be fair. Let's compare a Macbook with a Dell.

Macbook, first price : 1,099 $.

Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo (2.0GHz)
Hard drive : 80 GB
Memory : 1 GB
Optical : combo drive (NO burning).
Display : 13.3 inch
Video : Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Weight : 5.0 pds

Dell, 1,024 $ : Inspiron 1420

Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo (2.2GHz)
Hard drive : 160 GB
Memory : 2 GB
Optical : CD/DVD burner
Display : 14.1 inch
Video : Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

Please, make your own conclusions.
