i really think the Macbook Pro update is weak. they should do something with the video card. Where and when is Penryn update? Feb?

Well this is not an update. It's just tweaking the CTO options. The Penryn update will be announced at MWSF in Jan most likely. Now THAT will be an UPDATE!!! (and my next machine...) :D

Let's be fair. Let's compare a Macbook with a Dell.

Macbook, first price : 1,099 $.

Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz
Hard drive : 80 GB
Memory : 1 GB
Optical : combo drive (NO burning).
Display : 13.3 inch
Video : Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Weight : 5.0 pds

Dell, 1024 $ : Inspiron 1420

Processor : Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz)
Hard drive : 160 GB
Memory : 2 GB
Optical : CD/DVD burner
Display : 14.1 inch
Video : Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Weight : 5.39 pds

Please, make your own conclusions.

What's your point? I don't buy Apple hardware to get the best on paper specs. I buy Apple hardware to use OS X.

The Dell could be free and I would still buy Apple.

That's my own conclusion.

Here's a nice comparison of the new benchmarks:

Benchmark Comparison

Just read carefully!!!! This is comparing the new machines VS the original Core Duo's of each model!

It would be great to see the performance difference between MB Core2Duo 2.16 and MB SR Core2Duo 2.2. All you will see there is the result of the FSB increase. 5% maybe?

Would I upgrade for this alone? probably not.
Would I choose the current model over the outgoing model? you bet!

for me it's Mac OS X and no longer Windows that's helping in making this very easy decision ;)

And am I the only one that finds it absolutely preposterous that the BlackBook is $200 more for nothing but an extra 40GB of HDD space?

This is a really disappointing release :(

You're not the only one. I've been calling that from the rooftops since day one. They're paying a $150 premium for black paint. I commented a few months back that my cousin's blackbook was, to me, just another piece of evidence that he has more money than brains. (I'm not saying this about everyone who buys one, just him. Generally speaking, it's more about Apple's pricing than about those who buy it. If you think black paint is worth $150, then more power to ya... me, I'd buy a white one and soup it up better than the black one for less money)

Is it still this way if you order from MacMall or Amazon? The price disparity really is obnoxious.

Amazon Canada doesn't carry computers of any description, actually I'm quite amazed at what Amazon will sell to Americans that they won't sell to Canadians. Pretty much just books, movies, music and software on amazon.ca
Whereas Amazon.com sells elephants, frying pans and the moon on a stick.
Doesn't matter, I'll buy my books at Chapters, they're actually fixing prices to reflect the exchange rate.

After extensive digging at macmall, I found that they WILL ship outside the US but you have to phone them, you can't set up an account for a non-US address otherwise, and there are no details on the site re: how much they charge for this. Maybe I'll have them ship it to my uncle. But it still has to get here.

Here's the number for anyone who wants to find out: 310-354-5600

My goodness ! That's exactly my point !

OSX is the power ! The rest of it is just a ripoff !!!

Worded to deceive:

MacBook 2.2GHz offers more than 10% increases in performance
When compared to the prior top-line 2.16GHz models, the new 2.2GHz MacBooks offer speed improvements as follows when tested against the original 2.0GHz MacBook Core Duo

I do have a question though, just how much memory will my bought in June MB hold? Will it hold 4G? Should I stick with 2G?

Your MacBook will support up to 3GB of memory.
So, you would replace one of your SODIMMs with a 2GB one.
For example, http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/5300DDR2S2GB/ for $83 USD.
Your leftover 1GB stick is worth about $10. (Mine is sitting in my desk drawer.)

Do you need 3GB? That is the real question. If you run Windows under either Fusion or Parallels, then the answer is yes. If you don't, then I would stay at 2GB and put the $83 towards the large external hard disk that Time Machine will want.

Screw you guys. Just ordered a maxed out blackbook that's been waiting as a graduation gift for me since June.

iCouldn'tBeHappier.

hehe This seems to imply that people only buy Apple because they think it's the best specs for the least money, and that by you showing them they will magically wake up and start buying Dells.

edit: I think I am missing your point.

Right ! You're missing my point completely.

I just wanted to show you that from a strictly hardware point of view, Mac is still expensive compared to PCs.

Just to prove, again, that people buy Macs only because they LOOK better and feel more STABLE. Thyat's f...g all, i'm not defending Dells or Sony or any other Pc brand. Just try to grow up. As for me, I'll wait til January to get a new Macbook.

Wait for more?

Do you think it would be worth waiting untill jan for the chance of a more impressive update then? Thanks

As of right now, it looks like Apple hasn't changed their pricing in the Canada Store to reflect the strong Canadian Dollar. I call B.S. on that one.

Here is what I mean:

U.S. Store Prices for the three new MacBooks:
US Prices............ In Canadian Dollars after conversion:
$1099 USD............ $1039.22 CAD
$1299 USD............ $1228.34 CAD
$1499 USD............ $1417.46 CAD

Canadian Store Prices:
$1249
$1449
$1649

And let's not forget sales tax- in Canada, we're talking 14% tax on top of those high Canadian prices. If I take a quick drive down to Buffalo, NY, I can pay the U.S. price and only approximately 8% sales tax. Even if I have to declare the MacBook at the border, the duty fees I would have to pay would not come close to the more than $200 difference (over $320 difference including taxes). Oh, the cost of gas would only be around $50-60 to drive there and back, so it's still a big savings.

When Leopard was released, Apple priced it competitively in Canada to the US price, at $129 CAD. I expected them to do the same with the MacBook, considering our dollar is stronger than the U.S. and is still going up. I think that they've dropped the ball here. The price differences between products in Canada vs. the U.S. is a big story right now in Canada, and it's only a matter of time before this story appears on the news.

Guess where I'll be driving in the next couple of weeks? At least I'll be able to eat at The Cheesecake Factory.....

Most Canadians were expecting a price equalization when the next update come. Disappointing. BTW, the update isn't even showing up on the Apple.ca site.

THAT is smart shopping. Hey why not take a Greyhound bus there and back? Save teh chance of being in an accident and such. I recall some 3yrs ago a Canadian somewhere near Buffalo got robbed for some odd $51CAN and within 3hrs the thug RETURNED it to him in person stating Get some REAL money! lol. I wouldn't chance that nowadays. ;)

But seriously Thanks for highlighting that. IT seems our dollar COULD reach $1.10 - $1.20US by NewYears Eve, maybe even my Xmas Eve. If Apple really wanted to capitalize on holiday season sales, their marketing team better realize their mistake and adjust prices ... our dollar has been high for almost 2mths and it will NOT be the 1st time Apple did a $CAN adjustment in our favor.:apple:

If you are going to do hardware comparisons you really need to compare the actual manufacturer of the components as well, not just the "specs" of the components. In addition, more specific specs like weight, battery life, bandwith, etc. are also important.

In this case, I don't know which machine is better, but it is important to know if you are going to make this comparison.

I like the update. I think it's about time we saw the SR MacBooks!

Again : let's compare a Macbook with a Dell.

Macbook, first price : 1,099 $.

Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo (2.0GHz)
Hard drive : 80 GB
Memory : 1 GB
Optical : combo drive (NO burning).
Display : 13.3 inch

Dell, 1,024 $ : Inspiron 1420

Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo (2.2GHz)
Hard drive : 160 GB
Memory : 2 GB
Optical : CD/DVD burner
Display : 14.1 inch
Video : Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Weight : 5.39 pds

And one important thing : you have to wait until January to get a version of Office that's actually made for the new Macs. That's why Office is so slow on Intel Macs today. Another reason to wait.

If you are going to do hardware comparisons you really need to compare the actual manufacturer of the components as well, not just the "specs" of the components. In addition, more specific specs like weight, battery life, bandwith, etc. are also important.

Let's pretend Dell and Apple use the same manufacturers. In this case, I'm doing Apple a favour, since we know it's been using some corean second-rate hardware for years (check the apple cinema display for instance). And also, Apple is known to hide the brand of its hardware. On the contrary, PC manufacturers, especially Dell, practice the glasnost policy. Ever tried to get the brand of your optical drive on your Macbook ? See what i mean then.

As for the other factors, please, be serious. Can you imagine someone choosing Apple over Dell just because it has a longer battery life ?

Hey I was looking for a laptop for school that would not be too obsolete once I graduate next year. Having never owned a laptop and being in engineering, I liked the option of running Windows when needed and a good buddy was trying to convince me of the goodness of Apple. So I decided the black macbook was about right for me. Then he says wait -Leopard is coming out in a week, so ok I wait. Then oh look -macbooks are getting updated the following week. Great! I was pretty much sold on the blackbook already and now the upgrades are welcome -4Gb RAM and 250Gb hard drive possible -what's not to like? The MBP is too big for me anyway, so this falls into the category of good timing as far as I'm concerned! Wish the canadian pricing would reflect reality though...
