You are. Buy in the States if you can. Pay the GST/PST at the border.

Don't pay anything at the border! Who in their right mind declares any purchases at the US-Canadian border? Open the macbook before you leave, and play with it in front of the customs officer. I'll be damned if Uncle Sam or Queen Elizabeth is going to to nickel and dime me.

But yes, buy it in the States.

Again : let's compare a Macbook with a Dell.

Macbook, first price : 1,099 $.

Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo (2.0GHz)
Hard drive : 80 GB
Memory : 1 GB
Optical : combo drive (NO burning).
Display : 13.3 inch
Video : Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Weight : 5.0 pds

Dell, 1,024 $ : Inspiron 1420

Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo (2.2GHz)
Hard drive : 160 GB
Memory : 2 GB
Optical : CD/DVD burner
Display : 14.1 inch
Video : Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Weight : 5.39 pds

And one important thing : you have to wait until January to get a version of Office that's actually made for the new Macs. That's why Office is so slow on Intel Macs today. Another reason to wait.

Let me call you a Waaaaambulance.

Ok, seriously though, let's discuss this.

Dell pros against the Mac Book:
1. 80 GB more in HD space
2. DVD burner
3. .8 larger screen
4. .4 (but in essence really .2 Ghtz) faster processor speed
5. 1 GB increase in RAM
6. $75 less

- A comparable Mac Book with these exact specs would run $1524.

- I would rather spend $500 more for a machine that doesn't give me headaches, more time and money spent for phone and tech support, device driver errors, the "blue screen of death", etc.

- Also failed to mention that the Mac system comes with more software, such as full functioning OS X Mail, iChat, iCal, Front Row, Screen Sharing (already have used this with other Leopard OS Systems for work on web design and such, ROCKS!), Time Machine (MUCH better than Windows' "System Restore"), etc. All this additional software would raise the price of the Windows system as those applications have replaced the need for Entourage and other Windows based programs.

In the end, it may be a wash out for some but having a computer system that actually works, allowing focus on work, play, etc. makes a Mac based system a no brainer. :D

Guess where I'll be driving in the next couple of weeks? At least I'll be able to eat at The Cheesecake Factory.....

Make sure you stop by TGIF and Bennigans too,;). I couldn't imagine a day without a meal at one of these corporate "E-Z Bake Oven" restaurants.

Old vs. New

So besides the internal upgrades, is there anything new on the surface? Someone mentioned different keyboard layouts...anything to that? Just curious what else to expect from this new one. Thanks

What's your point? I don't buy Apple hardware to get the best on paper specs. I buy Apple hardware to use OS X.

The Dell could be free and I would still buy Apple.

That's my own conclusion.

AGREED.

Dude, you're missing the point. It is not just about the hardware, Mac OSX is the reason we use Macs, as stated above - you couldn't give me a Dell. By the way, Office works just fine for me.

I'm a PC user looking to go Mac. I want the new macbook, but really was hoping for the all new aluminum version.
Why do you want an aluminum version? For the aluminum?

I'm current in the market for a new laptop and although I should get a MacBook Pro, it's the aluminum which preventing me. I had a 17" Powerbook and although I loved the computer I hated the aluminum. I dropped it once while it was in a computer bag (the strap of the bag was on my should and it kind of slipped off while my hands were full and it barely hit the floor) and the corner of the machine folded just like....well aluminum!

LOL no kidding. Buck up, people. I do video editing on a G4/1GHz Powerbook. Cry me a freaking river.

Back in the day I had to use PINE MAIL (anyone remember this) on a terminal emulator. Let's all grow some perspective here and appreciate the industrial design that Apple has to offer and not become little Nigel Tufnels worried that the knob absolutely must go to eleven.

You can still surf pr0n, e-mail the latest youtube link of some douchebag nutting himself on a handrail, and watch pirated movies on the current Macbooks...

As for the professionals who complain about specs... If you don't know how to be more creative/productive on a lesser tool, then you're not that creative or productive to begin with. You can have a 20 piece drum kit and still be the worst drummer in the world. Buddy Rich got more sound out of a busted-ass four piece than most drummers to this day. Shakespeare had a vocabulary of over 650,000 words and didn't sit there whining about not having a better quill...

Man makes the tools, not the other way around.

Please folks i need help;

I just recieved an "old" Macbook 2.16/Superdrive/White yesterday.
I've installed Leopard an was disappointed about its graphic performance. As soon as the Dock is "big" and in 3D mode, exposé and spaces gets noticeably slow => :-(

Can this problem be solved by the X3100 ? When can first-buyers impressions be expected ?

I'm no gaming user, but student with <1% gaming usage. Could the change 950=>X3100 effect the possibility to play Starcraft 2 ?

I've already used CAD (CATIA V5) on the Macbook an it runs satisfying enough with a small group of parts. Can the graphical/ram/SR update majorly imrpove CAD performance?

Need help to decide if i should take advantage of the 14-day-return-policy. (Got an ipod nano for free with the back-to-school program)

Thankx for each answer...

I played with the 'yesterday' MacBook at the Apple Store. It's slower than what I expected. Interestingly, the Mac mini performed 'well' under Leopard. weird

Seriously. Having been raised in London and now living in NY, when I return to the UK (and other parts of the world) and I see American based establishments such as "Pizza Hut" and "Blockbuster" I want to vomit. As if the overly large people eating ridiculous portions of food at the Cheesecake factory weren't bad enough  .

Just Got one

Hey all, noob here. I just bought the new macbook, was looking to buy since late september but I waited for Leopard back then and then I waited for the update. I can now say that the wait is finally over. I have been using mac's since 2005 with the iBook that I bought then (the last iBook). Looking forward to the new OS.

Jay

Ever tried to get the brand of your optical drive on your Macbook ? See what i mean then.

What? it's trivial. My MacBook is at home, but on my work Mac mini:

MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846:
Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846
Revision: FM3J
Serial Number:
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
Low Power Polling: Yes

From System Profiler.

AGREED.

I don't understand you people, have you been lobotomized ? I totally agree with you ! Macs are more expensive, but they're more stable. Period. (btw, i didn't think the urban legend of the "blue screen of death" has survived so far... people, go check XP or Vista, there's not a such thing anymore...)

So does anyone have an idea what they may do to the macbook in jan? and is it worth the wait?

Back in the day I had to use PINE MAIL (anyone remember this) on a terminal emulator.

I still use PINE MAIL...

O.K., help me understand what point you are trying to convey.

I can't believe the update doesn't even warrant a little box on the front page, or even changing the phrase "Same lovable MacBook" on the MacBook page.

Could there be another update in January, or not until the Spring?

C'mon, we need more rumors. This news is several hours old already!
